Late goals, Jota tributes and racism claim as Liverpool wins Premier League opener
Strikes after the 88th minute by Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah sealed victory for Liverpool after the hosts squandered a two-goal lead.
Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo put the Reds 2-0 up.
In between those goals, the game was briefly paused after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported to referee Anthony Taylor in the 28th minute that he was targeted with racist language by a member of the crowd.
Semenyo, who is Black, needed to be consoled by teammates after the alleged incident but played on and scored in the 64th and 76th minutes to draw Bournemouth level.
It was the first competitive match at Anfield since Jota — a popular player for Liverpool — and his brother Andre Silva were killed in a car crash in Spain on July 3.
Ahead of kickoff, fans held up placards to spell out 'DJ20' and 'AS30' in two of the stands during a period of silence in honor of the Portuguese players.
Players from the Liverpool team stood arm-in-arm around the center circle, and staff and players from both clubs wore black armbands.

'We have arrested a man following reports racist abuse was directed towards Bournemouth player Antoine Semenyo during his team's Premier League fixture versus Liverpool at Anfield on Friday 15 August,' the Merseyside Police said in Saturday's statement. 'The suspect's identity was confirmed and he was removed from the ground following the report.' In the 26th minute of the match, broadcast video showed a fan engaging with Semenyo while the forward went to retrieve a ball for an impending throw-in. The fan can be seen shouting and pointing at the winger just before the Ghanaian restarted play. A short time later, play was temporarily suspended as both sides' managers and some players gathered with the match referee, Anthony Taylor, in the technical area to apparently discuss the incident between the fan and the player. On Saturday, Semenyo posted a statement to X, formerly known as Twitter, saying that the night will 'stay with me forever - not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together.' The 25-year-old winger thanked both his Bournemouth teammates and Liverpool's players, as well as the match officials for reacting in the way they did. He went on to score both of Bournemouth's goals, though the Cherries ultimately still succumbed to a 4-2 defeat. 'Scoring those two goals felt like speaking the only language that truly matters on the pitch,' Semenyo added. 'This is why I play - for moments like these, for my teammates, for everyone who believes in what this beautiful game can be.' 'The overwhelming messages of support from across the football world remind me why I love this sport. We keep moving forward, together.' The English FA also released a statement following the incident, stating the organization was 'concerned' about the alleged 'discrimination from an area of the crowd' and pledged to work with authorities, both clubs and match officials to 'establish the facts and ensure the appropriate action is taken.'

Wrexham falls to West Brom 3-2 at home for back-to-back losses in Championship
WREXHAM, Wales (AP) — Wrexham is still searching for its first points in the Championship after a 3-2 loss to West Brom on Saturday. After three straight promotions, Wrexham is one level below the Premier League but the Championship is renowned as one of the toughest divisions in soccer. Isaac Price scored twice for West Brom. Jed Wallace made it 2-1 for the visitors in the 74th after Lewis O'Brien had equalized for Wrexham before halftime. Price's second strike gave West Brom a two-goal cushion in the 81st before Sam Smith made it 3-2 moments before the final whistle. New winger Nathan Broadhead — Wrexham's club-record signing in midweek — came on to replace the injured Josh Windass. Broadhead joined from Ipswich in a deal that could reportedly reach 10 million pounds ($13.50 million). Play was briefly stopped while Taylor spoke to both coaches and team captains. 'Merseyside Police will not tolerate hate crime of any form,' said Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton, the match commander. The fan's identity was confirmed and he was removed from the stadium, police added. 'We take incidents like this very seriously, and in cases like this we will be proactively seeking football banning orders, with the club, against those responsible,' Chatterton said. Bournemouth players had consoled Semenyo and an anti-discrimination message was read out to the crowd inside Anfield after the halftime whistle. The Premier League also said it will investigate the incident and 'offer our full support to the player and both clubs.' In a statement, Liverpool said it was aware of the allegation and that it condemns 'racism and discrimination in all forms.' 'The club is unable to comment further as tonight's alleged incident is the subject of an ongoing police investigation, which we will support fully,' it added late Friday.
