Centre's ESIC Officials Visit Mangaluru ESI Hospital Following MP Brijesh Chowta's Persistent Push
Mangaluru: A high-level team from the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) headquarters in New Delhi visited the ESI Hospital in Shivabagh, Mangaluru on Thursday, following persistent efforts by Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta. The visit aimed to assess the state of infrastructure and address the chronic shortage of staff and medical personnel that has plagued the hospital for months.
The central team included Deputy Medical Commissioner Mona Verma and South Zone Insurance Commissioner (under ICT) T. Renuka Prasad. The team conducted a detailed inspection of the hospital's wards, laboratories, operating theatres, and staff quarters, and held discussions with the hospital's Medical Superintendent Dr Shailaja and other staff.
The visit comes in the wake of several representations made by Capt. Chowta to both the ESIC Director General in Delhi and Karnataka's Labour Minister. The MP had earlier paid a surprise visit to the hospital and expressed concern over the difficulties faced by the district's working-class patients due to the lack of adequate medical staff and facilities.
Following this, he had urged the state to establish a "Karnataka ESI Society" to streamline administration, enable quicker procurement of medical equipment, and facilitate the recruitment of qualified doctors and paramedics. Despite writing to the Labour Minister over three months ago, Chowta said no action had been taken by the state government.
Speaking to reporters after the ESIC team's visit, Capt. Chowta said he was pleased with the prompt response from the Centre. "The visit by the ESIC officials is a result of continuous follow-up. I am confident this will lead to substantial improvement in the quality of treatment and infrastructure at the hospital," he stated.
However, he emphasised the urgent need for the Karnataka government to step up. "To ensure smooth operation of ESI services across the state and to fully utilise Central funds, the state must immediately constitute an ESI Society. If not, the government should seriously consider transferring the hospital's management to ESIC to avoid further delays that affect healthcare delivery to the poor and working-class population," Chowta said.
During their visit, the Delhi team also reportedly indicated their willingness to take over the hospital's administration, if the state agrees, and upgrade services within the existing regulatory framework.
The ESIC hospital in Mangaluru serves a large section of industrial workers and low-income earners in Dakshina Kannada district, and has long been considered a critical healthcare facility for insured persons under the ESI scheme.

Focus on waste audit, segregation and management in 100-day municipal action plan
Waste audit of assessing the quantity and types of waste generated in a specific area, waste segregation and sustainable waste management practices will be the main focus of the 100-day action plan initiated by the government for improving conditions in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs, apart from the GHMC) across the State on the Telangana State Formation Day from June 2. The plan cleared by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who also holds the municipal administration and urban development department, includes identifying gaps in segregation, reducing waste reduction, recycling and better disposal practices. The audit will be to assess waste composition, identify gaps in segregation at every major source like a school, market, commercial area etc., informed top officials. It is to help in recommending strategies for waste reduction, recycling, and better disposal practices. Householders will also be encouraged to separate wet and dry waste at the source itself with separate bins. Local bodies have been directed to promote composting of organic waste to reduce landfill problem burden and also generate compost at the household/community level. Composting units will be set up in schools to process organic waste like food and garden waste, they said. Sanitary workers at all levels will be profiled to ensure they get their dues, including ESI/PF benefits, even as health camps will be held. The action plan also involves fixing iron mesh over open drains to prevent the entry of solid waste – a major issue of municipalities - reduce blockages and enhance cleanliness. Desiltation of storm water drains, removal of debris to prevent water logging is also on cards. Apart from reworking the street vending units and testing for food quality, street food festivals are to be conducted. The ULBs have been told to promote urban greenery and beautification efforts like development of at least one traffic junction and a park. The 'Bhuvan' survey for identification of unassessed and under assessed properties to bring them in tax net is being revived as part of the drive in association with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC). Identifying commercial and mixed properties lacking trade licences and collecting fee, door-to-door survey of all water supply house service connections for ward wise enumeration, and so on are among the activities earmarked during this period, they added.

Lad promises comprehensive development of Alnavar taluk
Affirming his commitment towards the overall development of the newly formed Alnavar taluk, Labour Minister Santosh Lad has said that continuous efforts are being made to make Alnavar a model taluk by initiating various development works. Addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone for the Praja Soudha administrative building in Alnavar on Tuesday, he said that the State government had sanctioned ₹8.6 crore for the project. Mr. Lad pointed out that although the building was being constructed on the outskirts of the town, it would soon become central as Alnavar town will expand. He clarified that the Praja Soudha was being constructed on available government land in a location convenient for the public. The Minister said that under the Bhoo Suraksha project, 3,90,054 pages of land records in the taluk had been digitised and the digital records were being provided to the public from June 1. A permanent drinking water supply project at an estimated cost of ₹71.9 core had been initiated for 3,780 houses in Alnavar town, he said. Mr. Lad said that the existing six-bed primary health centre in Alnavar would be upgraded to a 30-bed community health centre. As much as ₹6 crore had been released for the restoration and rejuvenation of the canal and tail channel of Indiramma lake in Hulikeri village. About 80% of the work was completed and would benefit irrigation over 1,240 hectares of farmland in the taluk, he said.
