Sky News Australia takes poll results direct to the people in innovative federal election campaign

Sky News AU05-05-2025

For the first time, Sky News Australia implemented dynamic out-of-home advertising technology to deliver real-time election results directly to Australians on election night.
This innovative media-first campaign featured a live data feed of the two-party preferred vote and seat count, seamlessly integrated from the network's live broadcast across digital out-of-home sites in CBD areas of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Overseen by Sky News Chief Election Analyst Tom Connell and the election team at the Sky News Decision Desk, data was ingested directly from the network's live broadcast feed and transmitted to a network of digital displays in high traffic roadside, bus shelter and street furniture locations.
Partnering with media agency Kaimera, along with advertising partners QMS and Convo Ink, Sky News Australia achieved a high-impact presence during the most important political event of the year.
This dynamic outdoor advertising execution formed part of an extensive five-week national federal election marketing campaign, also spanning print, digital and radio.
The campaign, encouraging people to see full results on the Sky News Australia mobile app, contributed to the network's highest day on record for daily active users and the app surging to the position of #1 Australian commercial news app in the iTunes News Chart.
The Sky News Decision Desk was the first to call that there was no path to majority for the Coalition at 7:40pm, with seat calls powering interactive online widgets across the full portfolio of News Corp Australia network websites.
More than 4.7 million Australians were kept up-to-date with the latest seats as they fell through this network-wide partnership.
Sky News Australia's Head of Marketing and Communications, Emma Van Der Aa, said: 'We couldn't think of a better moment to launch our first dynamic out-of-home campaign than the biggest political event of the year'.
'Thanks to our partners we showcased live results to high traffic sites in key locations; all powered by our election experts at the Sky News Decision Desk.'
News Corp Australia's 'Technology, Data and Digital' division, led by News Corp's Chief Technology Officer Julian Delany, also developed a media-first 'Live Activities' activation on iOS for the election, enabling users of mobile apps including Sky News Australia and The Australian to pin live seat data to their iPhone lock screen.
On election day Sky News Australia reached a combined television audience of more than 1.1 million viewers and saw Australians turn to its digital services in record numbers. SkyNews.com.au: Unique Visitors for the day up +93% on the four-week average.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong labels Iran-Israel conflict ‘alarming', as Australia tries to keep citizens safe

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has labeled the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel as 'alarming' and vowed Australia would do everything necessary to keep its citizens safe. Israel has claimed it launched a 'pre-emptive strike' on Iran amid concerns over Tehran's nuclear program and warned the military operation could continue for days. Senator Wong called for calm and urged parties to 'refrain from actions and rhetoric' stressing now was the time to 'prioritise dialogue'. 'Australia is alarmed by the escalation between Israel and Iran,' she told reporters in Adelaide on Friday. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the Israeli Defence Force had struck nuclear targets in Iran under 'Operation Rising Lion' to end an 'Iranian threat to Israel's very survival'. Senator Wong warned the conflict risked 'further destabilising' the Middle East which she labelled as 'already volatile'. 'We call on all parties to refrain from actions and rhetoric that would further exacerbate tensions,' she said. 'We all understand the need, the threat of Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile program. 'The international community understands the risk to peace and security from Iran's nuclear program. 'We urge the parties to prioritise diplomacy and to prioritise dialogue. 'In terms of Australians in the region, please monitor Smartraveller closely for the latest travel advice on the Middle East.' Shadow foreign minister Michaelia Cash has described the escalating conflict as 'concerning' and called for 'caution and dialogue'. 'The Coalition is concerned about the escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict and encourages caution and dialogue between both countries,' she said in a statement on Friday. Senator Cash said Iran must also guarantee that it will not pursue or acquire nuclear weapons. 'We also call on Iran to stop its sponsorship of terrorism, including backing Hamas and Hezbollah,' she said. United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday confirmed there was no involvement by the Trump administration in Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear infrastructure and military sites. America had in recent days withdrawn diplomatic personnel from the region. Senator Cash called on the Albanese Government to support and protect any Australians in the region. 'We also urge all Australians in the region to heed the official advice during this uncertain time,' she said. 'We expect the Government to prioritise the safety of Australian personnel and their families.' When asked on Friday if Australia was also contemplating withdrawing diplomatic personnel from Tehran or the wider region, Senator Wong said they were taking citizens' safety 'very seriously'. 'You should assume that we take the safety of Australians who are (there) very seriously,' she said. 'Australians who work either in the ADF or in our other posts overseas through various agencies . . . we will always take the appropriate action on that.' Senator Wong told reporters she had spoken with the Australian ambassador to Israel on Thursday and Australia would continue to monitor the situation. A Smarttraveller alert was issued on Friday after the military strikes, urging Australians in Iran to take shelter and reiterating advice not to travel to the region. 'There's an increased risk of military conflict. This could escalate rapidly and without notice,' it stated. 'Australians, including dual nationals, should strongly consider leaving Iran as soon as possible.'

Youth circus sticks the landing to run Circus Oz centre

The national youth circus will take over the operation of one of Australia's biggest circus training centres, originally built for Circus Oz. The Flying Fruit Fly Circus, Australia's only full-time circus school for primary and secondary students, will operate the site at Collingwood in Melbourne, the Victorian government announced on Friday. The company is based in Albury-Wodonga and tours internationally, with graduates working in top global circuses such as Cirque du Soleil. It makes Flying Fruit Fly Circus the biggest operator of professional circus facilities in Australia, according to chief executive Richard Hull. The company entered a public tender to run the site, in part to ensure it would not be repurposed, he said. "It's about being able to secure an amazing circus facility in Melbourne for our sector and for our circus community," said Hull. "Our concern was that through this tender process, it could have been easily lost to another art form or another use altogether." The government-owned facility was originally built with Circus Oz and opened in 2014. In 2021, Circus Oz lost millions in ongoing government funding as part of the National Performing Arts Framework. The once-successful company was wound down, losing staff and cancelling projects, and has since been run on a much reduced scale. Access to the Melbourne facility for the rest of the circus community has also been limited, creating frustration and further controversy in the industry. It has not been available for hire at all since around March. Circus Oz will remain a tenant in the building, which will be named Circus Centre Melbourne. "This will be a game-changer that opens up this facility while offering programs that will strengthen the sector and support the next generation of performing artists," Creative Industries Minister Colin Brooks said. The hope is to use the facility to develop a world-class circus hub to rival Quebec, where Cirque du Soleil is based, and for Melbourne to regain the crown as the creative centre of Australian contemporary circus. "Circus is a very needy art form, it requires big spaces with lots of height, very expensive equipment, and a very rigorous culture of safety, you can't just do it anywhere," said Hull. For the Flying Fruit Fly Circus the move is its biggest expansion since its founding in 1979. It will recruit a Melbourne-based team to run the centre, but its full time circus school will remain in Albury.
