Chinese voters to have influence in ‘certain seats': Tom Connell

Sky News Chief Election Analyst Tom Connell discusses how Chinese voters are a big factor in who wins in 'certain seats'. The seat of Bennelong has a high number of Chinese Australians, with a 'strong swing' against the Liberal Party. Teal MP Monique Ryan was handing out pamphlets in Chinese at her pre-polling booths, while her opponent, Liberal candidate for Kooyong Amelia Hamer, didn't, which may contribute to Ms Ryan's win.

Sky News Australia takes poll results direct to the people in innovative federal election campaign

For the first time, Sky News Australia implemented dynamic out-of-home advertising technology to deliver real-time election results directly to Australians on election night. This innovative media-first campaign featured a live data feed of the two-party preferred vote and seat count, seamlessly integrated from the network's live broadcast across digital out-of-home sites in CBD areas of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Overseen by Sky News Chief Election Analyst Tom Connell and the election team at the Sky News Decision Desk, data was ingested directly from the network's live broadcast feed and transmitted to a network of digital displays in high traffic roadside, bus shelter and street furniture locations. Partnering with media agency Kaimera, along with advertising partners QMS and Convo Ink, Sky News Australia achieved a high-impact presence during the most important political event of the year. This dynamic outdoor advertising execution formed part of an extensive five-week national federal election marketing campaign, also spanning print, digital and radio. The campaign, encouraging people to see full results on the Sky News Australia mobile app, contributed to the network's highest day on record for daily active users and the app surging to the position of #1 Australian commercial news app in the iTunes News Chart. The Sky News Decision Desk was the first to call that there was no path to majority for the Coalition at 7:40pm, with seat calls powering interactive online widgets across the full portfolio of News Corp Australia network websites. More than 4.7 million Australians were kept up-to-date with the latest seats as they fell through this network-wide partnership. Sky News Australia's Head of Marketing and Communications, Emma Van Der Aa, said: 'We couldn't think of a better moment to launch our first dynamic out-of-home campaign than the biggest political event of the year'. 'Thanks to our partners we showcased live results to high traffic sites in key locations; all powered by our election experts at the Sky News Decision Desk.' News Corp Australia's 'Technology, Data and Digital' division, led by News Corp's Chief Technology Officer Julian Delany, also developed a media-first 'Live Activities' activation on iOS for the election, enabling users of mobile apps including Sky News Australia and The Australian to pin live seat data to their iPhone lock screen. On election day Sky News Australia reached a combined television audience of more than 1.1 million viewers and saw Australians turn to its digital services in record numbers.
