José Alvarado Suspension Leaves Phillies With Massive Hole in Already Suspect Bullpen

Yahoo20-05-2025
There have been few bright spots in the Phillies bullpen this season. José Alvarado was one of them.
Not only did he have a 2.70 ERA and seven saves - both the best among Philly relievers - but he was also a local favorite, with moments that included meeting a young fan who mimicked his pitching motion and a special Mother's Day message on his cap.

Which makes his sudden PED suspension all the more hurtful.
While the Phillies could still make a run to the Postseason without Alvarado available for the next 80 games, the real challenge will be in October. As part of his suspension, José is ineligible for any playoff games, when he would have been needed the most.

During his career, Alvarado has been a lockdown arm in the playoffs. There have been a few blemishes, such as Game Six of the 2022 World Series and his sole appearance in the NLDS last year, but overall, he was very dependable over the past three runs.
The Phils were already in need of some bullpen help, but now that issue has grown to alarming levels. Aside from Alvarado, their only lockdown arm has been Matt Strahm. Orion Kerkering has been good aside from two rough appearances, and Jordan Romano has returned to form this month, but either would be an enormous risk to lean on. The same can be said for any of the Phillies pitching prospects currently at Triple-A.

Even worse, Dylan Cease, who was supposed to be the top reliever on the trade market this summer, could be staying put as the St. Louis Cardinals make their own case for the playoffs. That leaves Kyle Finnegan, currently with the division rival Washington Nationals, as the most likely trade candidate - one who will attract a lot of leverage.

MLB Speedway Classic Braves-Reds matchup suspended due to drenching rain

BRISTOL, Tenn. — It was a red flag for Major League Baseball at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night. The Speedway Classic between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds was suspended in the first inning because of rain, soaking a record-breaking crowd for the first regular-season game in Tennessee. The plan is to resume the game on Sunday afternoon. The first delay at the historic bullring of a racetrack came after the ceremonial first pitch featuring a pair of Hall of Famers in Johnny Bench and Chipper Jones, joined by NASCAR drivers Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott. The second with one out in the bottom of the first led to the game being pushed back a day, much like a red flag in motorsports. 8 A tarp covers the field, a sign announces the postponement of the game and fireworks explode at the MLB Speedway Classic between the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 02, 2025. Getty Images Fans who stuck out the first delay of 2 hours, 17 minutes started heading toward the exits before the game was postponed with the Reds holding a 1-0 lead. It was an unwelcome detour for the long-planned event mixing baseball and NASCAR. 'We're going to suspend tonight's game. … We are optimistic for a better weather forecast for tomorrow,' Michael Hill, MLB's senior vice president of on-field operations, told Fox. The rain made life difficult on the players before the suspension. A bat flew out of TJ Friedl's hands as he led off for the Reds. A pitcher seemed to catch his footing going to cover first base. 8 A member of the grounds crew rakes the infield dirt during the first inning. Randy Sartin-Imagn Images The MLB Speedway Classic was first announced nearly a year ago as part of Commissioner Rob Manfred's push to take MLB to places where baseball isn't played every day live. MLB played a game at the 'Field of Dreams' movie site in Iowa in both 2021 and 2022. Alabama and North Carolina, too. Reds pitcher Andrew Abbott showed up Saturday afternoon at Bristol wearing a cut-off version of a NASCAR race suit. Born in Lynchburg, Virginia, Abbott said he wanted something to wear in for a special game. 'I grew up around NASCAR,' Abbott said. 'Just went on eBay and found a couple options, and luckily that was the one that arrived in time. I had a couple of backups. I know who Rusty Wallace is too, so I actually do know the backstory behind it.' 8 Braves pitcher Austin Cox prepares to throw against the Reds during the first inning of the Speedway Classic game at Bristol Motor Speedway. Randy Sartin-Imagn Images Long before the fans departed in the rain, they were entertained by a 110-foot Ferris wheel, to go along with food trucks, live music, pitching tunnels and batting cages. Fans also had a chance for photos with the Commissioner's Trophy, and Clydesdales outside the historic racetrack. Inside, star Tim McGraw performed and was joined by Pitbull. Before the weather moved over the area, players stood in the back of pickup trucks with their numbers emblazoned on the side and rode around the half-mile racetrack. Some used their phones to document the moment. For introductions, the Braves and Reds walked between a pair of cars decked out in Atlanta and Cincinnati colors. 8 Tim McGraw performs prior to the MLB Speedway Classic between the Braves and the Reds at Bristol Motor Speedway on Aug. 2, 2025 in Bristol, Tennessee. Getty Images Then the tarp came out as rain that had been falling around Bristol much of Saturday turned heavy and delayed the start. The first delay led to the Braves switching starting pitchers. Spencer Strider, who grew up in nearby Knoxville, got a bigger ovation than Reds starter Chase Burns, who is from Hendersonville and played at the University of Tennessee. The Reds stuck with Burns despite the delay. Strider warmed up. The Braves chose not to risk his third start in this situation coming off a second elbow surgery. The rain stopped long enough to take off the tarp and start the game. 8 Players are introduced before the MLB Speedway Classic baseball game between the Braves and the Reds at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tenn. AP Michael Waltrip, who raced plenty at Bristol, restarted the festivities by quoting his brother Darrell: 'Boogity, boogity, boogity. Let's play baseball boys!' Atlanta went down in order in the top of the first inning. But there was another rain delay after Austin Hays hit an RBI single for Cincinnati in the bottom half. MLB didn't try to sell every ticket inside the speedway that drew 156,990 for the Battle of Bristol college football game in 2016. The track with a racing capacity of 146,000 could host 90,000 or more even with sections blocked off. Officials announced Monday more than 85,000 tickets had been sold — topping the previous paid attendance of 84,587 set Sept. 12, 1954, when Cleveland Stadium hosted the New York Yankees. 8 The field is covered up during a rain delay at the MLB Speedway Classic baseball game. AP A batter has to clear 400 feet to hit anything out of center field, 375 in the alleys and 330 down each base line. Pulling a ball down the line raises the prospect of a ball bouncing off the racetrack beyond the outfield wall. 'Honestly, my first thought I can't believe they did all this for one game,' Braves first baseman Matt Olson said of his first visit to Bristol. 'To be able to set all this up, get a playing surface ready, set the stands up in order to have the proper viewing, it's pretty incredible.'

Kyle Tucker Predicted To Betray Cubs In Free Agency After Deadline Letdown

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Chicago Cubs went all in to win this season when they swung a monster trade for expiring superstar Kyle Tucker in the offseason. While sitting atop the league, the Cubs went into the trade deadline with some massive holes on the roster, but ultimately didn't make many moves worth mentioning. This disastrous game plan could haunt the team in multiple ways. FanSided's Chris Landers recently suggested the Cubs' lack of urgency at the trade deadline could cause Tucker to bolt in free agency at the end of the season. MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - JULY 30: Kyle Tucker #30 of the Chicago Cubs points toward the dugout after hitting a double scoring two runs in the sixth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field... MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - JULY 30: Kyle Tucker #30 of the Chicago Cubs points toward the dugout after hitting a double scoring two runs in the sixth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field on July 30, 2025 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. More"And then the pitching injuries began, and the Milwaukee Brewers got hot, and now Chicago finds itself in a dogfight for the division," Landers wrote. "How did president Jed Hoyer respond to that pressure? By laying an egg at the deadline, acquiring a back-end arm in Michael Soroka, a utility man in Willi Castro, and a middle reliever in Andrew Kittredge. None of them are bad players or fits, but it's hardly the sort of statement fans were looking for. "And it could be what drives Tucker elsewhere come free agency this winter. Maybe it all works out and the Cubs do, in fact, get to or win the World Series. But this was hardly the best first impression for Hoyer to make, if he wanted to convince Tucker that the North Side was the place that would put him in the best position to compete for championships." Tucker is likely to receive a monster contract worth north of $350 million in free agency. The Cubs should be one of the top suitors in the sweepstakes, as well as the other big market clubs. If the money ends up pretty similar across the board, there's a chance that Tucker looks back at the deadline with some disdain for the Cubs' front office, especially if it comes back to haunt the team in the postseason. Tarik Skubal 'Eyeing Exit' After Tigers' Disappointing Trade Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Detroit Tigers are one of the best teams in baseball this season, which is a stark contrast from what they looked like at the trade deadline last year. At the trade deadline this season, the Tigers could have made a lot of big moves, but they opted to stand pat for the most part. This decision could come back to bite them as the other top teams in baseball all seemed to get a lot better. FanSided's Chris Landers suggested that Tarik Skubal could be "eyeing the exit" out of Detroit following the Tigers' lack of big moves at the trade deadline. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - AUGUST 02: Tarik Skubal #29 of the Detroit Tigers throws against the Philadelphia Phillies during the first inning at Citizens Bank Park on August 02, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - AUGUST 02: Tarik Skubal #29 of the Detroit Tigers throws against the Philadelphia Phillies during the first inning at Citizens Bank Park on August 02, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania."Speaking of complacency: The Tigers enter Friday tied for the best record in the AL, with no reason not to get as aggressive as possible to try and make a run to the World Series," Landers wrote. "But Scott Harris continued to tinker at the margins at the deadline, adding Charlie Morton and Chris Paddack to the rotation to go along with a flotilla of underwhelming relievers (Kyle Finnegan, Paul Sewald, Codi Heuer, and Rafael Montero). That's hardly the infusion of talent this team needs to separate itself from the pack. "Which would be bad enough as it is, before even considering the fact that ace Tarik Skubal is about to enter a walk year in 2026. Detroit still seems no closer to signing him to a long-term deal, which makes maximizing this current window even more important." It would be good for baseball for Skubal to re-sign with the Tigers. It would be a huge win for the small market teams that are trying to re-sign or extend their superstars. But if the front office isn't going to attack the trade deadline with the World Series in mind, it's hard to imagine Skubal would want to remain in Detroit. For the Tigers to land a contract extension, Skubal might need to take a hometown discount. Skubal likely won't take a hometown discount if the front office isn't willing to chase a World Series at the trade deadline.
