Progress continues but NI 'still have more growing to do'

BBC News22-03-2025

Much has been made of the youthful nature of Michael O'Neill's new generation Northern Ireland side.So youthful, in fact, that the average age of the team that finished the game was just 22. But that was just a figure, and at Windsor Park against Switzerland on Friday you could not tell who the battle-hardened, major tournament experts were, and who were the fearless youngsters. After earning promotion from Nations League C, this was billed as a step up for Northern Ireland against a pot one team.Switzerland, while without a win in seven matches, were Euro 2024 quarter-finalists and were only knocked out on penalties by England. Isaac Price's latest moment of magic gave the hosts the lead, but the Swiss soon levelled through a header from the unmarked Vincent Sierro. They have a reputation as one of Europe's most consistent and efficient sides, but there was not a gulf in class in Belfast. In fact, it was Northern Ireland who could have won the match as Price, Lee Bonis, Ethan Gabraith and debutant Jamie Donley all had efforts to find a winner."It was good, it was what we wanted from the game," said a satisfied O'Neill."We scored a goal goal but, we're disappointed with the goal that we lost."If you look at the age of our team, against a really strong team - yes, they are missing some important players, but so are we."I think it shows a lot of progress in the team. We weren't overawed by the opposition."
O'Neill was pleased with the work from his side off the ball, as they allowed Switzerland to dominate possession but chances for the visitors were few and far between. After a difficult Euro 2024 campaign, in which an injury-ridden NI fell short of qualification, O'Neill's side have now lost just twice in 11 matches - one of which was to European champions Spain and the other a narrow defeat on a heavy pitch in Bulgaria.Friday's draw shows that things are moving in the right direction ahead of the start of 2026 World Cup qualifying in September. For O'Neill, continuing that momentum is key."The cycle for Euro 2024 was a difficult one, we were never going to be able to compensate for the players we lost," O'Neill added."We didn't have players ready made to come in. We're probably benefiting from that now because we had to play the younger players in that point in time. "There is momentum and it's good for the players, because when they started to play international football, maybe they weren't winning a lot of games. "It's not like they are coming from the culture of, 'Oh, we're used to winning', so to give them that and get that experience at international level is vital. "We have a really good group of lads - how they work as a group and what they are like around the hotel, it's a really easy group to manage and I think they have a lot of growing still to do."
Galbraith shines as Price steals headlines
While Isaac Price, who O'Neill says is a "brilliant young player", stole the headlines after another superb goal, Northern Ireland's player of the night was arguably Ethan Galbraith, who continues to grow in stature every time he pulls on the green shirt. The Leyton Orient midfielder also caught the eye of O'Neill, who said the 23-year-old produced "a really good performance"."He's another player who looks really comfortable playing international football," O'Neill added."Technically he's so good as well. I always hoped Ethan would come through and I'm delighted that he has."When on the books of Manchester United, it was almost assumed it was a case of when not if Galbraith would play for Northern Ireland's senior team. However, after electing to drop down the leagues upon leaving Old Trafford, Galbraith has taken the long road to the international stage and O'Neill feels it was worth the wait. "Ethan was a terrific young player, and it's a difficult situation to come through and be a player at Manchester United. "He's had to go back down the leagues and I think Leyton Orient and [manager] Richie Wellens has been brilliant for him."
O'Neill added that "everyone knew the talent was there" with Galbraith, who also had a spell at Doncaster Rovers."It sometimes just takes a little bit longer for it to fall into place. "His mentality is a lot stronger now, his physical attributes are stronger - but his ability on the ball was never in question." After Friday's solid performance, Northern Ireland will be tested again in Stockholm against Sweden on Tuesday evening, who are on a resurgent run after dropping into League C.O'Neill admits he doesn't have the depth to "change the side dramatically and expect the team to be just as strong", but says he will likely freshen things up."Sweden are a good side. I'm not sure whether [Newcastle United striker Alexander] Isak will play and I believe [Sporting Lisbon's Victor] Gyokeres is out, but they have good players and it will be a test for us. "The players should gain confidence from tonight's game and take that into Tuesday."

Tottenham sack Ange Postecoglou weeks after Europa League success

Postecoglou delivered on his promise of 'always' winning in his second season thanks to the 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao on May 21. It etched head coach Postecoglou's name into the history books as only the third Spurs boss to taste European success and the first in 17 years to lift silverware – provoking an outpouring of affection from a previously split fanbase. Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties. — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) June 6, 2025 While Postecoglou divided opinion across two years in England and attracted criticism during a torrid 17th-placed Premier League campaign, his San Mames triumph appeared enough to earn him year three. Postecoglou even delivered a mic-drop moment during a euphoric open-top bus parade in front of an estimated 220,000 people when he declared 'season three is better than season two', but chairman Daniel Levy had other ideas and has dismissed the man to deliver him a much-craved trophy. 'Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties,' a club statement read. 'We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw. 'However, the board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the club for a change to take place. 'It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond. A post shared by UEFA Europa League (@europaleague) 'This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision.' Postecoglou released a statement via his agency CAA Base, saying: 'When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride. 'The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. 'Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget.' Brentford boss Thomas Frank has been installed as the bookmakers' favourite to replace Postecoglou, who departs following a rollercoaster ride in his first Premier League role. A run of eight wins from his first 10 league fixtures – despite the high-profile departure of Harry Kane – propelled Spurs to the summit but a sign of things to come was a thrilling loss to Chelsea in November, 2023 where several injuries occurred. Fifth place in Postecoglou's debut campaign still represented an impressive finish but cracks started to emerge during a 2-0 loss at home to Manchester City where some Tottenham fans were conflicted given a positive result would have put rivals Arsenal in the driving seat for the title. A slow start to the 2024-25 campaign was followed by Postecoglou's second season trophy claim and a strong run of form as Spurs emphatically defeated Manchester United, Aston Villa and Manchester City. Guglielmo Vicario's fractured ankle in a 4-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium was quickly followed by serious setbacks for Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven and Tottenham lost eight of their 11 league fixtures in a jam-packed December and January. The Carabao Cup provided solace until a 4-0 loss at Liverpool in the last-four, which meant it was Europa League or bust for Postecoglou. A last-16 tie with AZ Alkmaar was navigated and, while Postecoglou aimed a cupped ear celebration at his own fans away to Chelsea in April, he managed to get a sinking ship back on track to knock out Eintracht Frankfurt before Bodo/Glimt were thrashed in the semi-finals after supporters' responded positively to the Australian's call-to-arms. It was then all eyes on San Mames, where Postecoglou's bold second season declaration came to fruition. Brennan Johnson's first-half goal proved the difference as Spurs clinched a narrative-busting 1-0 win but euphoric celebrations in Spain, at an open-top bus parade and during a carnival final-day atmosphere were played out against a backdrop of uncertainty over the future of Postecoglou. Even though Postecoglou expressed his desire to take Tottenham to the 'next level' and received public backing from various players, chairman Levy has dismissed the Greek-born coach.

Ange Postecoglou proud of bringing ‘glory' back to Tottenham

Postecoglou masterminded the club's first trophy in 17 years when he guided Spurs to Europa League glory with a 1-0 win over Manchester United on May 21. The long-awaited silverware came amid heightened speculation over his future, following a 17th-placed Premier League finish which represents Tottenham's worst top-flight position since they were relegated in 1977. We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy. Thank you Ange 🤍 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) June 6, 2025 The outpouring of affection that followed from fans flipped the narrative around Postecoglou's future, with the Australian serenaded on multiple occasions at a subsequent trophy parade in front of an estimated 220,000 supporters. Further chants in support of Postecoglou came in a final-day 4-1 loss to Brighton before several Spurs players backed him to stay, but Daniel Levy has dismissed the head coach who earned him much-craved silverware. Postecoglou, via a statement from his agency CAA Base, said: 'When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur my overriding emotion is one of pride. 'The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. 'Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. 'That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. 'We have also laid foundations that mean this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. 'I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. I know there were some difficult times but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on. 'It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis. 'And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special. 'We are forever connected. Audere est Facere. Ange.'

Andorra vs England predictions: World Cup 2026 qualifying tips and odds

Our expert has three tips for Saturday's World Cup qualifying match between Andorra and England at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona, Spain (kick-off, 5pm BST). We think England could rack up the goals in Catalonia. Andorra vs England tips England -3 goals on handicap @ 4/5 with Sky Bet Pau Babot to commit 3+ fouls @ 11/10 with Sky Bet BuildABet - England to win to nil, Andorra to commit 18+ fouls and Bukayo Saka to score or assist @ 3/1 with Sky Bet Odds courtesy of Sky Bet. England should ease to victory Finding the value in a mismatch such as this can be tough but England to win by four or more goals looks overpriced at 4/5 with SkyBet. Thomas Tuchel's tenure started with 2-0 and 3-0 wins over Albania and Latvia respectively, and Andorra are another level below those sides, sitting 173rd in the Fifa world rankings, and they in turn were outclassed in a 3-0 defeat by Albania in March. England are likely to field a strong side for this one with players likely to be rotated for the friendly with Senegal next week, and attacking players such as Ivan Toney, Eberechi Eze, Morgan Gibbs-White and Morgan Rogers will want to make their mark if given the chance. Inexperienced Babot may rack up fouls Given the uncertainty with team selections, punters should tread carefully in the player markets but 21-year-old Pau Babot has started Andorra's last two games and, if he gets a run out in this one, he could rack up the fouls. Babot's inexperience showed in his last two games for his country as he recorded two fouls against Albania and an almighty seven against Latvia. England averaged 73.8 per cent possession in their first two World Cup qualifiers, so Andorra will have plenty of work to do off the ball and Babot is a decent pick to commit 3+ fouls at 11/10. Saka can shine for new boss Tuchel Those looking for a BuildABet for this contest should start it with England to win to nil. The Three Lions have kept clean sheets in their last four competitive matches, limiting Latvia to just a single shot on target in March's 3-0 win, and Andorra are without their chief goal threat Albert Rosas. Andorra to commit 18+ fouls is another enticing selection. Only Bosnia (19.5) have averaged more fouls than Andorra (17.5) in World Cup qualifying so far and England should have the lion's share of possession. Complete the BuildABet selection with Bukayo Saka to score or assist with the Arsenal man expected to feature for the first time under Tuchel. The winger managed six goals and 10 assists in the Premier League this season. Andorra vs England odds All odds courtesy of Sky Bet. Correct at the time of publication and subject to change.
