West Coast to unleash Champion under Friday night lights

Perth Now03-07-2025
Essendon Bombers coach Brad Scott denies the club is in the midst of an injury crisis, despite a number of key players facing fitness concerns.
West Coast will hand an eighth player an AFL debut on Friday night when Naitanui Academy graduate Malakai Champion takes on Greater Western Sydney.
Less than a week after forward Jobe Shanahan earned league-wide praise on debut, Champion will become the fifth of West Coast's 2024 draftees to earn his wings.
The 172cm small forward was drafted from Subiaco as a Category B rookie after impressing at the draft combine, ranking fifth on the 20m sprint (2.94 seconds) and second on the agility test (7.84 seconds).
Those attributes have been clear to see at WAFL level with Champion earning goalsneak status with seven goals in 11 WAFL outings.
Fittingly, Champion also comes from Kalgoorlie, playing his first game just days after fellow Goldfields product and Eagles grand final hero Dom Sheed announced his retirement.
Archer Reid, Sandy Brock, Hamish Davis, Tom Gross, Bo Allan, Tom McCarthy and Shanahan have all debuted so far in 2025.
The Eagles will also celebrate NAIDOC week in round 17, wearing the club's First Nations jumper that featured during Sir Doug Nicholls round and the club's only victory this season against St Kilda.
More to come.

AFLW 2025: Essendon star Madison Prespakis braced for ‘tough' midfield war with West Coast Eagles

Essendon star Madison Prespakis is bracing for a midfield war against the Eagles as West Coast head to Melbourne this weekend. The Bombers are fresh off their highest AFLW score after routing Greater Western Sydney by 56 points as they unveiled four debutantes. But Prespakis, who has established herself as one of the game's best and had a career-high 26 touches and a goal against the Giants, said they were ready for a 'tough' outing against the Eagles. The Daisy Pearce-led West Coast won their season opener for the second year running, seeing off Gold Coast by 15 points as All-Australian midfielder Ella Roberts starred and first-gamer Lucia Painter lived up to her hype with three majors in seven minutes to earn the first Rising Star nomination. The Eagles also have the wood over Essendon, beating them last year, a fact Prespakis has hardly forgotten. 'I feel like the last couple of years we've had some good battles with the Eagles,' she said. 'What Daisy's done with that team has been pretty awesome. They've just come out of the blocks really quickly. 'They're an exciting young group similar to us. They've got some really young girls on their list and their draftees had a huge impact last week. 'So, we expect it will be a battle, especially inside the midfield, but also around the whole ground, and I'm excited for it. 'They beat us last year, so we're looking forward to a tough contest this week, but we want to beat them at home. It's our first game at Windy Hill, so we want to start well there.' West Coast are set to unleash another debutant at Windy Hill, Kayley Kavanagh named to start. The Victorian, who grew up down the road from Essendon's base, was taken with pick 14 in last year's draft. 'It feels amazing,' Kavanagh said of her selection against the Bombers. 'I've worked so long and so hard, especially after missing last season with an ACL, so it's such a good feeling to finally be getting out there with the girls. 'I'm really looking forward to debuting in my home State and running out at Windy Hill, which is just five minutes from my house in Melbourne. 'Hopefully all my friends and family can be there to cheer us on.' Roberts and Prespakis will be a must-watch contest on Sunday. However, the Bombers will also need to shut down intercept defender Charlotte Thomas. Thomas is the focal point of the Eagles' counterattacks, entrusted to cut the ball off and move it quickly into the middle, having gathered 333 metres gained last week, while skipper Bella Lewis will also be better for the run after returning from injury against the Suns.

Why compromised AFL draft is forcing clubs to pitch inflated contract offers to free agency stars

Essendon coach Brad Scott says the compromised AFL draft has triggered inflated contracts, as clubs without draft ties risk mediocrity if they don't aggressively pursue free agents. The Bombers will likely have two top-six draft picks in this season’s draft but will not reap the full value of those selections in a drafted dominated by northern academies. Scott was guarded in his response about the potential of losing free agent Sam Draper but was open when asked why the free agency environment had become so direct. His analysis comes as Brisbane had access to the most talented player in the 2024 draft, Levi Ashcroft, via father-son and has more right of entry to this year’s top 10. Scott said clubs without tied draftees were forced to get aggressive with rival players or “sit back and be mediocreâ€. “If you look at the draft this year, 50 per cent of it is compromised … I’ve worked at the AFL, I know how difficult, in fact impossible, it is to get everything right,â€ he said. “I think what’s clearly happened is you’re looking at a situation where the reigning premier has access to top-end academy players in the draft. “The northern states have got a mortgage on the top five, six, seven or eight in the draft this year and so it leaves other clubs with very little choice other than to get ultra-aggressive in the trade and free agency market. “I’m sure there will be a discussion out there about the inflationary nature of these big contracts, but what choice have clubs got? “They either sit back and be mediocre or they get aggressive and that’s the flow-on effect of the situation we’re in at the moment where access to top talent is incredibly hard to get.â€ AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon last week said the draft system was under review but this year’s would remain the same. Scott on Wednesday said the signalled change was positive but it “doesn’t help anyone this yearâ€. “The change that’s been flagged won’t happen this year, often it’s the case, you need change but for this year’s draft it’s too late,â€ he said. “The horse has already bolted on that â€' that doesn’t mean the change shouldn’t happen. “That’s been flagged, that change will be coming, but that doesn’t help anyone this year.â€ Scott said while the number of father-sons at some clubs was difficult to manage, it was an aspect he and AFL supporters were “prepared to tolerateâ€. “The situation with father-sons is that it’s a nostalgic thing,â€ he said. “I think most football people have said, ‘Well it’s not equitable or fair but most people in the industry have been prepared to tolerate’. “What I don’t think we foresaw was a situation where it’s not the father-son rule (anymore), it’s the father-sons rule, where families are just now. “Talking Daicoses, Ashcrofts, Darcys, they’re multiples now, so it’s distorting the competition somewhat, but the fair value is improving to a certain extent.

Essendon coach Brad Scott says sub rule change would make two ruckmen essential as he bids for Sam Draper to stay

Essendon coach Brad Scott is adamant the best option for his club's success is playing two rucks, including off-contract Sam Draper, after the club re-signed his injured understudy Nick Bryan for two more years. Bryan’s signature comes as the Bombers hold out hope that Draper, who is being circled by the Brisbane Lions and Adelaide as he recovers from an achilles injury, remains at the club. Scott said a “really strong case had been put to Draper that he would play his best football at Essendon, and the possible removal of the sub rule was an extra reason for the big men to play together. “They’re very close (friends), Scott said of Draper and Bryan. “The evidence at the start of the year was very clear … they were both playing career-best football together. “We’ve been really clear in terms of we’d like to have that ruck partnership into the future. “The indication with changes to the sub rule only strengthens that case to play two rucks. Scott has made personal pleas to Draper but also insisted the 26-year-old, who has only played 78 games but could get a deal worth in excess of $1m a season elsewhere as the contract arms race escalates, had to look after the “rest of his life. “Clearly, he’s got a lot of interest, but I think we’ve presented a really strong case as to why he’ll play his best football with us, Scott said. “There’s an incredibly strong appetite from a lot of clubs to improve their list through trading and free agency. “Right at the moment, it feels like more than ever. “Sam knows how important he is to us, and he knows how much I, in particular, value him. “But I’ve made it really clear to him that he’s got to come to this decision himself and do what he thinks is in the best interest of his career and for the rest of his life. The Bombers will go into Thursday’s game using veteran Todd Goldstein as the first-choice ruck, but captain Zach Merrett will return for game number 250 despite carrying a broken hand. “Nothing will stop him playing, Scott said.
