Wycombe and Charlton play out goalless stalemate in play-off first leg

Rhyl Journal11-05-2025

Despite Mike Dodds' Chairboys being the out-of-form side out of all of the teams involved in the play-offs, they were superb in the opening 45 minutes.
Jack Grimmer and Fred Onyedinma worked brilliantly down the right-hand side to cause the Addicks' back-line numerous problems, and they almost took the lead inside the opening five minutes.
Grimmer's ball found Cameron Humphreys, who brilliantly picked out striker Dan Udoh.
He took a touch and fizzed a shot at goal from the edge of the box but goalkeeper Will Mannion managed to parry the ball to safety.
From the resulting corner, Sonny Bradley's header went wide.
It was a tight and cagey affair as Charlton struggled to break down a stubborn defence.
Wanderers looked alert, dangerous and a completely different side from the one on the end of a 4-0 thumping by the South East London outfit 20 days earlier.
One bone of contention in the first half was that Addicks boss Nathan Jones and his side believed Wycombe forward Richard Kone should have been shown a straight red card.
The Ivorian was chasing down Kayne Ramsay but slipped, catching the full-back on the calf.
Referee Farai Hallam opted to give Kone a yellow card, but replays suggested the tackle was dangerous and that the 21-year-old was fortunate to stay on the pitch.
Moments later, Kone was involved in a pushing match with Macaulay Gillesphey which led to a small melee between both sets of players.
Following the coming together, Wycombe's Xavier Simons and Charlton captain Greg Docherty were booked for their part.
The second half was similar to the first as both sides put bodies on the line.
Onyedinma and Adam Reach went close for Wycombe, while Tyreece Campbell saw a shot blocked by Bradley.
Will Norris was called into action after 69 minutes when he blocked Matty Godden's stinging effort, before he once again denied the ex-Coventry man in the closing stages.
A long ball over the top found Godden, who fired a volley towards goal after brilliantly controlling it on his chest.
Norris pushed it away, and from the resulting corner he was there to claw away Docherty's close-range effort.

Fernandes dines with 'Al-Hilal's secret agent' amid Man Utd transfer exit talks

Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes is the subject of huge interest from Al-Hilal and has been out dining with one of their current stars, Joao Cancelo, as he weighs up an offer Bruno Fernandes continues to be linked with a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal and has been spotted dining with Portugal pal Joao Cancelo - who has been dubbed a "secret agent" by fans as he looks to convince the Manchester United star to join him in the Middle East. Al Hilal are willing to make Fernandes one of the best-paid players in the world and will fork out £100m to sign the playmaker. Fernandes' agent Miguel Pinho has been in Riyadh for talks with senior Al Hilal individuals and those in Saudi see it as a positive sign that discussions have been held. ‌ United want to retain Fernandes, but Al Hilal believe every player has a price. The Portuguese star will turn 31 in September, but does have a contract until 2027. ‌ It has been reported that the Saudi offer will only last for so long and Al-Hilal want an answer within days. Their lucrative bid will be rescinded if they do not hear back soon, putting Fernandes and United on a timer. The United skipper has met with Al-Hilal's full-back Cancelo, formerly of Manchester City, and national team-mate with Fernandes. A snap of them at a group meal in a restaurant has seen speculation soar that a deal could be sorted within days with Cancelo playing his part. The ex-City man was 31 last Tuesday and a birthday cake with candles was presented to him at the restaurant as he celebrated at the weekend. Fernandes was by his side having made the trip back from United's post-season tour of Asia. ‌ It would be a huge loss for Ruben Amorim, who has seen his side saved by Fernandes on numerous occasions. But he believes the ex-Sporting Lisbon man wants to remain in England. He said: "Of course I am the manager, the coach, but sometimes it is the decision of the player, but of course I talk with him, I explain things and I just have that feeling. When you talk to someone, you have that feeling if he wants to stay. "Of course in a lot of games this season he was so frustrated, but he knows what we are doing. The feeling that I have every time I speak to him is he wants to continue for sure at Man Utd. But you never know." ‌ Al Hilal have also held talks about signing Cristiano Ronaldo, who will become a free agent next month if he doesn't sign a new contract at Al Nassr. He recently claimed his "chapter was over" on social media. The Saudi club expect to have at least one big-name signing and a new head coach - possibly Inter Milan's Simone Inzaghi - when they play in the Club World Cup this month.

Former Scots footie star accused of deliberately getting booked in gambling scam

Ex-Livingston star Keaghan Jacobs, 35, faces court over claims he intentionally earned a yellow card in a 2019 match vs Celtic to aid a betting scam. A former SPFL star is due to appear in court accused of deliberately getting himself booked in an attempt to cheat at gambling. Keaghan Jacobs, 35, is alleged to have picked up a yellow card on purpose while playing for Livingston in a Scottish Premiership league match against Celtic. He is said to have 'acted in a manner whereby he would receive a yellow card for the purpose of enabling or assisting others to cheat at gambling ' during the clash at his team's Tony Macaroni stadium on October 6, 2019. A second man, Conan McDiarmid, 40, is alleged to have placed bets – and arranged for others to take punts – on Jacobs getting a caution. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The case against Jacobs, from Edinburgh, and McDiarmid, from Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, called at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last week. Proceedings against Jacobs were continued without plea to later this month. McDiarmid's lawyer lodged a not guilty plea. A trial date was set for later this year. The match involved in the alleged betting scam saw Livingston secure a 2-0 win, handing the Hoops their first defeat of the season. Jacobs was shown the yellow card by referee Willie Collum for a foul on winger Jonny Hayes as the game was coming to a close in the 95th minute. Jacobs is a South African national who had two spells with Livingston between 2007 and 2015 and again between 2017 and 2022. The star has played a total of 252 times for the West Lothian club and scored 23 goals. He has also turned out for South African club Bidvest Wits, Falkirk, Arbroath and is currently playing with Lowland League club Gala Fairydean Rovers. He is believed to have made football history when he played alongside his three triplet brothers – Kyle, Devon and Sheldon – in a Scottish Third Division match between Livingston and Albion Rovers in April 2010. The 2-0 victory in front of just over 600 fans is said to be the only time four brothers have turned out for the same professional senior team in the same match. McDiarmid played as a defender with a number of amateur clubs, including Edinburgh United and Whitehill Welfare, before he retired in 2020 and moved into management.

Ferdinand says it 'hurts' that Man Utd were beaten to £29.5m signing by rivals

Rio Ferdinand says it 'hurt' to see Manchester United miss out on the signing of Jeremie Frimpong as the right-back would have been a 'perfect' fit for Ruben Amorim's system. The Red Devils had been keeping close tabs on Frimpong's progress for well over a year, with the 24-year-old wing-back earning himself plenty of admirers across Bayer Leverkusen's historic 2023/24 season under Xabi Alonso. Frimpong followed this up with another eye-catching campaign at Leverkusen this term – and United were believed to be among the frontrunners to capture the Netherlands international this summer. But Liverpool overtook United in the race for Frimpong after begrudgingly accepting Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure for Real Madrid and the Dutchman's arrival on Merseyside was confirmed Friday. Frimpong put pen to paper on a five-year contract at Anfield and joins the newly crowned Premier League champions for a fee of £29.5million. Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer,' Frimpong told the Reds' official website. 'For me, it was like, 'Whatever you guys do, just get this done,' [speaking to] my agents: 'Just get this done!' 'Liverpool fans, I'm going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together. 'I'm just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me. 'I won't let you guys down and I'll give you the energy that you guys want.' But United legend Ferdinand says the move still 'hurts' as he is confident the former Celtic and Leverkusen star would have been ideally suited to the way Amorim sets up his teams. 'Frimpong is going to Liverpool which will hurt me a little bit, I've got to be honest,' the ex-United and England defender said on Rio Ferdinand Presents. 'I think he would fit the way that Ruben Amorim wants to play perfectly.' Ferdinand is, though, delighted to see United wrap up their first piece of summer transfer business by signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves – subject to visa approval and registration procedures. 'I have to say, I'm really excited about Cunha signing,' Ferdinand explained. 'I'm happy we signed him, I'm happy with how aggressive we've been immediately, acting on it instantly.' After luring Cunha to the Theatre of Dreams, Ferdinand hopes to see his former club bring in a striker, a central midfielder and a right-back. More Trending He added: 'I think this is a great start to the transfer window. If I was advising the recruitment team on anything now, I would be saying: 'Please make sure you do not forget an experienced No.9',' Ferdinand said. 'I'm not going to say names, I've said the names too many times, and I would go and get a midfielder as well. 'A midfielder that can dictate the player and pass and be the orchestrator, but he also needs to have some legs about him as well. That's what Ruben Amorim's teams are about, they do that. 'Those two players would be the next ones, a centre-forward and a central midfielder, also a right-back.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
