Andy Halliday obliterates Rangers tactics as he exposes 'pure myth' under Russell Martin
Andy Halliday has obliterated Russell Martin' s Rangers tactics with a forensic examination of his gameplan. .
The former Ibrox hero picked apart the new boss' approach from their dismal 1-1 draw at home to Dundee, which has left Martin without a win in his first two Premiership matches in charge and in serious danger of falling well off the pace of champions and rivals Celtic already.
Halliday got a close up view of Martin's team on the opening day of the season. He was an unused substitute at Fir Park as Gers were held 1-1 by Jens Bethel Askou's side.
And they fared no better at Ibrox as beleaguered Steven Pressley was handed a timely boost by leaving Govan with a share of the spoils.
The Dark Blues were only denied all three points by a controversial penalty call two minutes from time.
And Halliday gave a detailed breakdown of the team he'll face at least another twice this season, breaking down the draw backs to Martin's style and how Rangers are still struggling to break down sides that are happy to sit in and hit them on the break.
Getting the tactics board out, Halliday spoke on the Open Goal podcast to co-hosts Simon Ferry, Paul Slane and fellow ex Ibrox man Kevin Kyle.
He had the formation lined up from Saturday's 1-1 draw against Dundee and ripped it to shreds, saying: 'This is Rangers against Dundee.
'Dundee played a 5-4-1, really compact, really tight, really deep and narrow. Rangers went with a flat back four and they had five players attacking eleven players. How are you going to create chances and score goals if you're five v eleven?
'You would struggle to score against kids in training if you were five v eleven. And do you know what they keep doing because there's nothing else on? They play a straight pass into Cyriel Dessers and when they lose the ball there's f***** nobody in the middle of the pitch.
'People talk about Rangers having inverted full backs but that's a pure myth.'

Celtic v Falkirk injury news: 6 out with Brendan Rodgers to make decision on trio for Premier Sports Cup tie
Celtic will look to progress to the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup as they welcome newly-promoted Falkirk to Celtic Park on Friday night (kick-off: 7.45pm). Winners of the competition for the last three seasons, Brendan Rodgers' side have started the campaign in a typically efficient fashion, beating St Mirren and Aberdeen in their opening two league games. Meanwhile, Falkirk has a number of injury issues heading into the game, with up to six first-teamers missing the game in Glasgow. Napoli striker could make 'U-turn' after Celtic links
Giuseppe Ambrosino, the Napoli centre-forward, was reportedly a target for the Parkhead club earlier in the summer. The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Frosinone, where he netted five goals in 37 appearances. The Italian forward was expected to make a move this summer, with Celtic and Cremonese both expressing interest. However, local Italian newspaper Corriere del Mezzogiorno, via suggests that 'there could be a U-turn.' Read more: Ambrosino is reportedly considered 'valuable' to Napoli's squad and may stay put, despite Cremonese's loan offer with an option to buy. Ambrosino is currently training separately at Napoli's training ground while awaiting confirmation about his future. Celtic's pursuit of the young Italian has quietened down in recent weeks, with manager Brendan Rodgers still in search of attacking reinforcements. Rodgers, however, had no updates on potential new signings following his team's 2-0 victory over Aberdeen at the weekend. He said on Sky Sports: "Look, I think that I've got no news now at this very moment on where we're at. "Our job between now and the end of the window is to make Celtic the very best that we possibly can. "In the meantime, we'll continue to develop the players that are here and improve them. "Of course, I want Celtic to live in the very best possible place that it can be. "And for me, that'll be us signing more players at the top end of the pitch. "We know what we need to strengthen. "We know where we want to live and be the best that we can be - we have to."
