JDT edge Al-Riyadh as Figueiredo finds the net

KUALA LUMPUR: Super League giants Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) wrapped up their pre-season tour in Spain on a positive note after securing a 1-0 victory over Saudi club Al-Riyadh SC today (July 22).
National team heritage player Joao Figueiredo netted the only goal of the match in the 10th minute, marking his first goal for the Southern Tigers since joining the team.
The narrow win provides a sweet end for Xisco Munoz's squad after a challenging series of pre-season matches in Spain throughout July.
JDT had earlier suffered two consecutive defeats, losing 1-0 to Qatari club Al-Rayyan SC and Valencia Mestalla, results that initially sparked concern among supporters.
Earlier, the 11-time Super League champions had beaten Real Murcia Imperial 4-0 and edged Costa City 1-0. JDT also recorded two draws against Cardiff City (2-2) and Levante UD (0-0).
The match against Al-Riyadh was JDT's final pre-season fixture before they return home to face their first match of the new season.
The Southern Tigers will kick off their 2025-2026 season campaign with a Charity Shield clash against Selangor at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Aug 8.

'Only JDT look serious': Analyst slams sorry state of Super League

KUALA LUMPUR: The new Super League season kicks off on Friday — but the domestic campaign is already under threat, with poor pre-seasons, lack of ambition, and fading interest raising serious concerns. While defending champions Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) look sharp after a solid pre-season tour in Spain, many other clubs appear unprepared — a worrying sign for both the league's competitiveness and the national team's preparations. The curtain-raiser comes in the form of the Charity Shield clash between JDT and Selangor at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, but critics say excitement around the new season is notably lacking. "There's a lot of uncertainty in the Super League, except for JDT," said football analyst Dr Zulakbal Abdul Karim. "It feels like some clubs are participating just for the sake of it. Pre-season has been subdued, with hardly any teams going abroad like they used to." Zulakbal warned the domestic league's stagnation could lead to a slow start, with players lacking sharpness, low crowd turnouts, and financial hits due to poor gate receipts. "Clubs don't seem to have the funds for proper pre-season prep," he added. "Some don't even bother because they believe no one can challenge JDT. That kind of mindset is damaging for Malaysian football." JDT's dominance — 11 titles in a row — has made the M-League highly predictable, with many clubs seemingly surrendering before a ball is even kicked. The deeper concern is the impact this may have on Harimau Malaya, with two crucial friendlies coming up during the Fifa window against Singapore (Sept 4) and Palestine (Sept 8). National coach Peter Cklamovski has already warned that he needs players to arrive fit and match-ready as the games are warm-ups for the Asian Cup qualifiers. "If players arrive unfit, low on confidence, or carrying knocks, it will hurt the national team," said Zulakbal. "Singapore are always a tough derby, and Palestine narrowly missed out on the 2026 World Cup. We need our best players at their peak."

Argentine Hidalgo eyes Malaysia call-up after December

KUALA LUMPUR: Argentine Manuel Hidalgo hopes to be a national player for Malaysia. The 26-year-old, currently on loan to KL City from Johor Darul Ta'zim, said he will meet FIFA's five-year residency requirement after December, making him eligible to play for Harimau Malaya. "I think I will have been here for five years by that time," said Hidalgo, who debuted in the Super League with Sri Pahang in April, 2021. However, the former Sheffield Wednesday and Benfica youth winger said he has yet to speak to national team head coach Peter Cklamovski on the matter. On joining KL City, who had difficulty paying salaries in previous seasons, Hidalgo said the backing of JDT had given him the confidence in making the move. Hidalgo also defended KL City coach Risto Vidakovic following online claims that the team's training sessions have been lacking in intensity. "The squad that we have this year is going to be something to talk about," he said. Hidalgo also dismissed rumours of dressing room unrest in KL City, adding that the rapport between the coach and players has been good. JDT the clear favourites again

Published on: Monday, August 04, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 04, 2025 By: James Wong Text Size: The inclusion of Brunei's DPMM FC and the Immigration team has added new flavour to the league, but how well these two newcomers fare is anybody's guess. THE 2025-26 football season will kick off with the Charity Shield on August 8. It is a match between 11-time Super League champions JDT FC and another giant in Malaysian football, Selangor FC. It is also the first league game of the new season and a lot will be at stake for both teams. JDT FC will no doubt be the hot favourites to win the tie with their menacing line-up of heritage and naturalised players in addition to their foreign imports and local Internationals. Although I believe Selangor also known as the Red Giants have prepared well and set their sights for a good season, it will still be a very tough task for them to get a win in the season opener.
