From Tragedy To Internet Icon, The Incredible Story Of Harambe The Gorilla
Harambe's story serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities surrounding wildlife captivity and human responsibility.
On the afternoon of May 28, 2016, a three-year-old kid visiting the Cincinnati Zoo with his family climbed over a public barrier and fell into the moat that surrounds the Gorilla World exhibit. Harambe, a 17-year-old western lowland gorilla weighing 400 pounds, lived in the enclosure. The aftermath of this human coming face to face with the wildlife became a poignant and unforgotten chapter in our meme culture that is still fresh in the minds of the folks on the Internet.
What Happened After That
Upon falling roughly 15 feet into the moat, the child was approached by Harambe. Video footage captured by bystanders shows Harambe standing near the boy and then grabbing and dragging him through the water. At one point, Harambe appeared to hold the boy upright, which some interpreted as protective behaviour, though it also involved moments of rough handling. The scene was distressing, with onlookers shouting, some recording video, and others pleading for help.
The zoo's animal response team quickly arrived on the scene. While Harambe did not appear to be overly aggressive in all of his actions, zoo officials described his behaviour as 'agitated" and unpredictable. There were growing concerns that the gorilla could unintentionally harm or kill the child due to his sheer size and strength, even if Harambe meant no harm.
Tranquilizing Harambe was ruled out by zoo staff, as they feared the sedative wouldn't take effect immediately, and could further agitate the animal. Given the potential danger to the child's life, the decision was made to fatally shoot Harambe with a rifle. The child was then safely retrieved by zoo personnel and taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, including scrapes and bruises.
After The Incident
The incident triggered a firestorm of public opinion. Some blamed the zoo for inadequate safety measures, while others criticised the boy's parents for not supervising their child more closely. An investigation by authorities cleared both the zoo and the boy's parents of wrongdoing, citing it as a tragic accident.
While the child survived with only minor injuries, the shooting of Harambe sparked global outrage, ignited debates on animal captivity, and made Harambe a viral symbol of both genuine concern and internet satire.
The Rise of the Harambe Meme
After Harambe's death, the internet transformed the gorilla into a viral meme. The hashtag #RIPHarambe trended widely, and satirical campaigns emerged.
Harambe's name was humorously suggested in various online polls, such as naming a baby gorilla 'Harambe McHarambeface."

The Cincinnati Zoo, overwhelmed by the meme's persistence, temporarily deleted its Twitter account due to constant mentions, as per reports. Harambe's image became a symbol of internet culture, blending satire and commentary.
The meme culture surrounding Harambe highlighted the internet's role in shaping public discourse and collective memory.
Harambe's Enduring Legacy
Harambe's death led to increased scrutiny of zoo practices and discussions about human-animal interactions. The Cincinnati Zoo faced both criticism and support, while Harambe's story reportedly inspired songs, artworks, and even a statue on Wall Street.
The incident remains a reference point in debates about wildlife conservation and the ethical treatment of animals.

Arizona woman beaten unconscious by man during concert at Rose BowlAn Arizona woman who did not want to be identified is recovering after a brutal beating over the weekend at a sold-out concert in Pasadena's Rose Bowl Stadium that was captured on video and has since gone viral. Accused left the woman unconscious and bleeding As per the report, the unidentified concertgoer returned about a half hour later and began screaming at the victim and her friends, threatening violence. On the other hand, she said she tried de-escalating the situation by apologising again; the man punched her in the face, knocking her unconscious and causing significant bleeding. Since the footage has now gone viral, netizens have complained that the venue did a less-than-stellar job of managing the sold-out stadium show. Eyewitnesses and netizens slam the incident According to Grimy Goods, the independent Los Angeles-based music blog, "Among the long laundry list of complaints was crowd crushing in tunnels, people pushing in overcrowded stairs, aggressive drunk people, arguments, fans blocking exits, incredibly long shuttle lines, and, sadly, assault." Christina Molina, another attendee at the concert that night, was sitting a few rows behind the victim with her daughter and said, 'I literally had people pressed up against my back, all of them blocking that entire walkway,' she told KTLA. 'So, crowd control was nonexistent.' While one user asked, "Where was the fiancé!!!!????" "He's fighting a guy. She got in the way." One assumed, "The fact that no man intervened leads me to believe the woman assaulted him first. Stole from him. SOMETHING. There's definitely more to this." 'What serial killer hair cut is that? Geezus! Internet 🛜 we need to identify him,' one added. Another said, 'This is why women should always carry pepper spray.' 'Not a single man in that crowd. Absolutely pathetic that these "men" didn't step in and stop that.' 'Looks like a Grant... an Immigrant.'

Lok Sabha passes Bill to ban online games involving monetary enrichment
Amid din by the Opposition, the Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, aimed at checking instances of addiction, money laundering and financial fraud through such applications, by voice vote without a debate. An online money game is one played by a user by depositing money in expectation of winning monetary and other enrichment. Once the legislation is passed by both Houses of Parliament, offering or facilitating online money gaming will be punishable by imprisonment of up to 3 years and/or a fine of up to Rs 1 crore. The Bill also seeks to prohibit advertisements related to online money games as well as bars banks and financial institutions from facilitating or transferring funds for any of such games. In his opening remarks, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said while digital technology brought many benefits, the online money games became a challenge, though e-sports and online social games like chess and solitaire were useful. 'Online money games have become a problem. Many people have become addicted and frittered away their earnings. There are opaque algorithms that lead to losses. Many families have been destroyed. In Karnataka, there were 32 suicides reported in 31 months,' he said, adding that WHO has also flagged the dangers of online money games. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said he was willing to allot time for a thorough discussion of the Bill that addressed a social cause, but the Bill was passed quickly through a voice vote, as Opposition members continued to protest and raise slogans. The Bill aims 'to promote and regulate the online gaming sector including e-sports, educational games and social gaming; to provide for the appointment of an Authority for coordinated policy support, strategic development and regulatory oversight of the sector…' It also aims 'to prohibit the offering, operation, facilitation, advertisement, promotion and participation in online money games through any computer resource, mobile device or the Internet, particularly where such activities operate across State borders or from foreign jurisdictions; to protect individuals, especially youth and vulnerable populations, from the adverse social, economic, psychological and privacy-related impacts of such games…' The Bill endeavours 'to ensure the responsible use of digital technologies; to maintain public order and protect public health; to safeguard the integrity of financial systems and the security and sovereignty of the State; to establish a uniform, national-level legal framework in the public interest; and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto'. The key to the Bill is the prohibitions it imposes to deal with the addictive aspects of online money gaming that lead to financial losses and psychological problems. 'No person shall offer, aid, abet, induce or otherwise indulge or engage in the offering of online money game and online money gaming service. No person shall make, cause to be made, aid, abet, induce, or otherwise be involved in the making or causing to be made any advertisement, in any media including electronic means of communication, which directly or indirectly promotes or induces any person to play any online money game or indulge in any activity promoting online money gaming,' it lays down, adding, 'No bank, financial institution, or any other person facilitating financial transactions or authorisation of funds shall engage in, permit, aid, abet, induce or otherwise facilitate any transaction or authorisation of funds towards payment for any online money gaming service.' The Bill empowers the Centre to notify an Authority consisting of a Chairperson to assist it in the implementation of the Act.
