#CaxtonCares: [Video] Caxton shows support for Mandela Day

Boksburg Advertiser, as part of Caxton Local Media, commemorated Mandela Day today (July 18) by donating sandwiches and packet soups to the Community of Hope Multipurpose Centre in Reiger Park. The sandwiches were delivered to the local NPOs, bringing smiles, warmth, and nourishment to some of the community's most vulnerable residents. The majority of the beneficiaries were children and senior citizens who rely on the centre for daily meals, support, and care. The Community of Hope Multipurpose Centre plays a vital role in supporting underprivileged households and individuals from the surrounding areas. For many of the recipients, Caxton's donation brought much-needed comfort during a time of increasing hardship. Also Read: Communities unite to honour Nelson Mandela Elaine Appies, director of the organisation, expressed heartfelt gratitude. 'We are so blessed to receive the sandwiches and soup. Our children and elderly are very happy and grateful and, more importantly, they felt seen and valued.' She explained that the need for food assistance has grown drastically in recent months. 'After the food parcel cuts by the Gauteng Department of Social Development almost four months ago, many families who relied on us were left without basic support. 'Every week, people arrive at our gates in search of help. This donation brought not only food, but also hope.' Appies emphasised that while Mandela Day serves as a national call to action, their mission goes far beyond July 18. 'People often think of Mandela Day as just 67 Minutes, but we have 24 hours every day to make a difference. 'That's our message: every day is an opportunity to uplift and support others. Poverty doesn't stop after Mandela Day, and neither do we.' She also commended Caxton Local Media for their ongoing involvement. 'Caxton – and specifically Boksburg Advertiser – is always there for us , not just through donations like this, but also through telling our stories. 'Their articles help us reach more people and remind the community that we exist, that we care, and that we need support too. Thank you Caxton,' said Appies. No injuries were reported, and the police are on the lookout for the perpetrators. Anyone with information that can assist with the investigation is requested to contact the Crime Stop Hotline on 08600 10111,' Nevhuhulwi said. Toxic smoulder takes over Sea Cow Lake

THREE eThekwini Municipality departments were called out to Gumtree Road in Ward 34 on Thursday after residents raised the alarm over toxic fumes emanating from an old illegal dumpsite. Also read: Man shot dead in Avoca, motive unknown The area's ward councillor, Andrew Akkers, said a fire broke out at the site about three weeks ago. Although it was contained, the smolder of toxic fumes has not stopped since then. Residents expressed their concerns to him stating that they are worried about the impact it could have on human and animal health. 'We've received a number of complaints from residents who are breathing in these toxic fumes daily. The smell of chemicals in the air is overwhelming. It's a serious health hazard,' said Akkers. 'On Thursday, 26 June I met on site with the City's Pollution Control and Risk Management, Air Quality Team from City Health, Fire and Disaster Management, and Environmental Health. They stated they would put out a media statement that evening but this is yet to happen,' he said Akkers said toxic chemicals had been dumped on this site in previous years until Metro SAPS intervened last year and fined the culprit. Akkers believes that these chemicals, now underground, is what is burning and expelling toxic fumes into the air. He said that the fumes are not only affecting Ward 34, but are also being carried by the wind into neighbouring Ward 36, where more complaints have emerged. 'There are reports of animals becoming ill, and residents experiencing health problems like headaches, nausea, and breathing issues. The situation is unacceptable, and the lack of action from authorities is deeply concerning,' he added. @caxtonlocalmedia Three eThekwini Municipality departments were called out to Gumtree Road in Ward 34 last Thursday after residents raised the alarm over toxic fumes emanating from an old illegal dumpsite.
