Sabah Dapsy slams Umno Youth chief over Penang protest
Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 Text Size: Chan with fellow Sabah Dapsy members outside the Luyang police station. KOTA KINABALU: Sabah DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) chief Chan Loong Wei has criticised Umno Youth chief Akmal Salleh for leading a protest in Penang despite police advice against it. Chan said the gathering outside a hardware store turned an honest mistake in displaying the national flag into a political act that risked creating division among Malaysians. He lodged a report at Luyang police station on Friday, describing the move as political provocation, noting the shop owner had apologised yet the protest still went ahead. Chan pointed out that Umno Youth had also displayed incorrect versions of the Jalur Gemilang in the past, accusing Akmal of applying double standards by ignoring his own wing's mistakes. He stressed that Sabahans reject politics of intimidation and division, adding that Dapsy would continue to defend the state's reputation for harmony and resist any attempt to import extremist politics. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Public must work together to stop bullying - Mohd Na'im
KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar today urged Malaysians, especially Muslims, to work together to put an end to all forms of bullying. He said bullying is a vile act that not only causes physical harm but also leaves deep emotional scars. 'Islam teaches us to live with mutual respect and compassion, and to safeguard the rights and dignity of every individual. Bullying does not merely injure the body but also breaks hearts and extinguishes hope. 'Remember, the prayers of those who are wronged have no barrier before Allah. Therefore, avoid any form of injustice, even as small as a speck. Bullying must stop, and love must flourish,' he said in a video posted on Facebook today. Mohd Na'im added that bullying does not reflect Islamic values and urged the people to work together in fostering a harmonious society that upholds good relations. - Bernama

Star eyes Chinese-majority seats
Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 Text Size: Chua noted that local-based parties are increasingly seen as more equipped to address on-the-ground concerns, as they are not tied to peninsula-based political interests and agendas. Kota Kinabalu: Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) Deputy President Datuk Kenny Chua said voters in Sabah, particularly in urban and Chinese-majority areas, are increasingly placing their trust in local parties that are better tuned to the State's unique political and social fabric. 'The winds have changed. Sabahans, including the Chinese community, are increasingly looking to local parties that can genuinely represent their voices and aspirations,' he said. His remarks come in response to Sabah DAP Deputy Chairman Datuk Chan Foong Hin's recent claim that the party is confident of winning eight to 10 seats, including the existing six, and reclaiming Sri Tanjong and Elopura. Chua cautioned against relying too heavily on past voting trends, stressing that the political landscape has evolved. 'Voter sentiment today is driven by real engagement, accountability and local understanding,' he said. He added that Star is not only preparing to contest in more constituencies but also specifically targeting several with strong Chinese voter bases — a reflection of growing grassroots support across communities. 'This is not just a strategic move. It's a direct response to what we believe is the people's call for more grounded, Sabah-based leadership. Local parties like Star are fully capable of championing the interests of all Sabahans — Chinese included,' he said. Chua noted that local-based parties are increasingly seen as more equipped to address on-the-ground concerns, as they are not tied to peninsula-based political interests and agendas. As Sabah heads into what is expected to be a highly competitive election, the contest will likely spotlight the rising role of State-rooted parties that promise inclusive and responsive leadership grounded in Sabah's diverse reality. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
