GE Aerospace (NYSE:GE) stock has risen by almost 40% this year, significantly surpassing the S&P 500, which has decreased by 1%. This remarkable surge prompts an important question for investors: Is GE stock now overvalued, and could it face a significant correction, possibly by 25-30% or even 40% to below $150?
Well, here's the concern – at roughly $235 per share, GE stock seems overpriced. It is trading at nearly 60 times its free cash flow over the last twelve months. To put this into perspective, this results in a meager cash flow yield of about 1.7%. For comparison, Nvidia, a leader in the AI sector with over 80% average revenue growth in recent years, trades at a lower multiple of 50 times cash flow. GE's current valuation arises from a significant restructuring that has redirected the company towards high-growth sectors in commercial, military, and general aviation. After spinning off its healthcare, renewable energy, and power divisions, GE Aerospace is now benefiting from an increasing demand for its aftermarket services, including engine servicing and aircraft maintenance. This trend is projected to persist, supported by solid order inflows—$12.3 billion in Q1'25, showing a 12% year-over-year increase—and an extensive backlog of $140 billion as of Q1.
Additionally, GE has shown substantial expansion in margins. Its operating margin has surged from 12.3% in 2022 to 18.8% over the last twelve months, a remarkable 53% increase that the market has rewarded.
GE Aerospace also enjoys a leading position in the large commercial engine market, facing only a few competitors such as Rolls-Royce, Safran, Honeywell, and Pratt & Whitney. Its CFM56 and LEAP engines power a considerable portion of the world's commercial fleet, effectively binding airlines into decades of GE's high-margin maintenance, parts, and service operations. Changing engine suppliers is a complex and expensive task for airlines, reinforcing GE's revenue stream.
While GE's revenue growth may remain in double digits, the rapid rate of margin expansion is probably not sustainable. Therefore, GE should be valued more in alignment with other companies achieving 10-15% revenue growth.
Even when contrasted with a firm like Microsoft, which trades at about a 48 times free cash flow multiple and boasts 15% annual growth, GE's current valuation appears stretched. At Microsoft's multiple of 48x cash flow, GE's stock price would be closer to $190 per share. Investors should reflect on whether GE deserves an even lower multiple considering its growth trajectory.
Despite the apprehensions surrounding its high valuation, there are reasons GE Aerospace might continue to perform favorably. Its performance is intrinsically linked to aviation volumes, spanning commercial air travel, domestic flights, international routes, and cargo transport. A strengthening economy, potentially driven by alleviating trade tensions and declining inflation, could significantly enhance business and leisure travel as well as global trade.
Increased flight activity directly correlates to a heightened demand for new aircraft and engines, allowing airlines to expand their fleets and replace aging planes. Crucially, more flight hours also mean increased demand for engine maintenance, parts replacement, and service revenue—GE's most lucrative segment. Every additional hour an engine is operational contributes directly to GE's aftermarket revenue, as airlines heighten utilization rates and flight frequencies.
Comparing GE with firms like Nvidia and Microsoft is not about identifying direct equivalents but understanding the relative appeal and risk-reward dynamics of an investment. When evaluating GE, investors should consider its potential returns against alternatives such as holding cash (earning interest) or investing in a broad market ETF like the S&P 500.
Utilizing 'anchor' assets like Nvidia and Microsoft, which also trade at elevated multiples, offers critical insight into GE's risk-reward profile. These comparisons assist investors in determining whether the anticipated return on GE stock justifies the associated downside risk, especially considering that these anchor stocks provide more compelling growth stories. This analytical method is vital for making informed investment choices.

Asian shares slide as Russia-Ukraine conflict, OPEC+ output plan push oil prices higher
HONG KONG -- Asian shares sank on Monday and oil prices jumped as trade tensions and the Russian-Ukraine conflict ratcheted up geopolitical uncertainty. Hong Kong's Hang Seng plunged more than 2% as Beijing and Washington traded harsh words over trade. U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement that he will double tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50% layered on still more worries for investors. A report over the weekend that China's factory activity contracted in May, although the decline slowed from April as the country reached a deal with the U.S. to slash President Donald Trump's sky-high tariffs, further undermined market sentiment. Markets in mainland China were closed for a holiday. Oil prices rallied after OPEC+ decided on a modest increase in output beginning in July. It was the third monthly increase in a row. U.S. benchmark crude oil gained $1.60 to $62.39 per barrel, while Brent crude, the international standard, was up $1.41 at $64.19 per barrel. Moscow pounded Ukraine with missiles and drones just hours before a new round of direct peace talks in Istanbul and a Ukrainian drone attack destroyed more than 40 Russian planes deep in Russia's territory, Ukraine's Security Service said on Sunday. Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 2.2% to 22,778.45 as China and the U.S. accused each other of breaching their tariff agreement reached in Geneva last month. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 lost 1.6% to 37,356.97, while the Kospi in Seoul fell 0.4% to 2,686.17. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 retreated 0.2% to 8,416.00. On Friday, Wall Street closed its best month since 2023. The S&P 500 retreated less than 0.1% to end at 5,911.69 and the Dow industrials Jones Industrial Average edged 0.1% higher to 42,270.07. The Nasdaq composite fell 0.3% to 19,113.77. Gap weighed on the market even though the retailer reported stronger profit and revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected. The company behind Banana Republic and Old Navy fell 20.2% after saying tariffs on imports from China and other countries could add up to $300 million to its costs this fiscal year. It has strategies set to mitigate up to half of that before it hits its profits. Hopes had largely been rising that the worst of such worries had passed, which in turn sent stocks rallying, after Trump paused his tariffs on both China and the European Union. A U.S. court then on Wednesday blocked many of Trump's sweeping tariffs. That all sent the S&P 500 in May to its first winning month in four and its best since November. But the tariffs remain in place while the White House appeals the ruling by the U.S. Court of International Trade, and the ultimate outcome is still uncertain. Friday's most influential losses came from several Big Tech stocks. Nvidia fell 2.9% to give back some of its gain from earlier in the week after it topped analysts' expectations for profit in the latest quarter. It was the single heaviest weight by far on the S&P 500. On the winning side of Wall Street was Ulta Beauty, which rose 11.8% after the retailer reported stronger sales and profit than analysts forecast. It also raised the top end of its forecasted range for revenue this fiscal year even though CEO Kecia Steelman called the operating environment 'fluid.' Costco climbed 3.1% after the retailer's results and revenue for the latest quarter edged past analysts' expectations. In the bond market, Treasury yields eased after a report showed that the measure of inflation that the Federal Reserve likes to use was slightly lower in April than economists expected. A separate report from the University of Michigan said that sentiment among U.S. consumers was better in May than economists expected. Sentiment improved in the back half of the month after Trump paused many of his tariffs on China. In currency trading early Monday, the U.S. dollar fell to 143.55 Japanese yen from 143.87 yen. The euro inched up to $1.1364 from $1.1351.

China Rejects Trump's Accusation That It Violated Trade Truce
China said on Monday that the United States had 'severely undermined' the trade truce the two countries reached last month, striking back against President Trump's accusations that it was violating the terms of their agreement. In a statement, China's Ministry of Commerce called Mr. Trump's attacks on social media last week 'baseless.' He had accused Beijing of failing to live up to its end of their trade deal, a 90-day rollback of tariffs and other trade barriers to give the two countries more time to negotiate and prevent an all-out trade war. China's commerce ministry said it had continued to honor its agreement responsibly and accused the United States of 'erroneous practices' by introducing a series of 'discriminatory restrictive measures.' These included restrictions on the sale of chip design software to China and barring American companies from using or financing artificial intelligence chips from the Chinese technology giant Huawei. It also criticized the Trump administration's announcement that it planned to 'aggressively revoke' the visas of Chinese students and that it would enhance scrutiny of all future applications from China, including Hong Kong. 'The U.S. side has unilaterally escalated new economic and trade frictions, exacerbating the uncertainty and instability of bilateral economic and trade relations,' the ministry wrote in its statement. 'Instead of reflecting on its own actions, it has turned the blame onto China.' China said it would take measures to 'safeguard its legitimate rights and interests' if the United States continued to harm Chinese interests. The growing confrontation over the fragile trade truce between the world's two largest economies has raised questions about whether they can strike a permanent accord within the 90-day deadline. The United States has grown increasingly concerned about access to rare earth magnets, which are crucial for producing cars, semiconductors, aircraft and other vital items. China maintains a near monopoly on the production of rare earth metals. American companies' ability to keep factories running could be in jeopardy without a sufficient supply of those magnets. Jamieson Greer, the U.S. trade representative who negotiated the deal along with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, said during a Friday appearance on CNBC that China was 'slow-rolling their compliance' and that the flow of some critical minerals has not returned to levels that American officials were expecting. The agreement, announced on May 12, offered a temporary reprieve to the escalating trade tensions between the two largest economies. The United States had pushed tariffs on Chinese imports to 145 percent and China responded by raising import duties on American products to 125 percent. Under the truce, the United States agreed to lower its tariffs to 30 percent, while China cut its import tax to 10 percent for 90 days. Amy Chang Chien contributed reporting from Taipei.
