Power up Mosjaya hawkers centre without delay, S'wak minister tells MCC, SEB
MIRI (July 18): State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin has urged Miri City Council (MCC) and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to expedite electricity supply to the two reconstructed hawker centers and markets at Mosjaya Commercial Centre.
During a working visit today, Lee expressed surprise that the facilities remain without power despite having been completed two months ago and already in use by hawkers.
'It was already completed two months ago, but I found that there is still no electricity supply during my working visit today.
'I call upon the council and Sarawak Energy to connect the power supply without delay as everything is ready,' said the Senadin assemblyman.
The two centres were rebuilt by the city council after being damaged in separate fires previously. Lee was accompanied by councillor Jeffery Phang and members of SUPP Riam during his visit.
Lee also addressed safety concerns raised by operators, calling on the council to build a ramp to the coffee shop section of Tamu Mosjaya to improve accessibility and patron safety.
At the same event, Lee and his team also distributed Sarawak flags to hawkers at both centres, noting increased public awareness of Sarawak Day's significance among Miri folk.
'Except for a few older ones, most replied 'Sarawak Day' when I asked them if they knew what July 22 means,' he said, referring to the upcoming Sarawak Day celebration.
'All the hawkers from different communities are in high spirits when they talk about Sarawak Day, and this shows it is well promoted,' he stressed.
Miri serves as the centre for this year's state-level Sarawak Day celebration. The annual commemoration was gazetted by the Sarawak government under the late Chief Minister Tun Pehin Sri Adenan Satem in 2016.
Sarawak Day marks July 22, 1963, when the territory was granted self-rule in preparation for joining the Federation of Malaysia on September 16 of the same year.
After World War II, Sarawak was briefly administered by the British Military Administration before becoming a Crown Colony in 1946, when it was ceded to the British Government by Charles Vyner Brooke.
Lee said this was the first day of self rule by the administration led by Stephen Kalong Ningkan as first Chief Minister, and Sarawakians should take pride in this occasion.

AirBorneo The high-profile launch of AirBorneo on February 12, following the acquisition of MASwings from the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), has made Sarawak the first state in Malaysia to own an airline. AirBorneo is expected to launch full operations by next year, with services targeting domestic and regional routes across Southeast Asia, including Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta, Hong Kong, and Japan. 'AirBorneo is poised to create a balance between connectivity, affordable fares and economic benefits. 'Operating as a full-service carrier (FSC), AirBorneo can significantly enhance the passengers' experiences through superior in-flight services. 'This will emphasise the regional prestige of Sarawak as a premium travel destination,' said Abang Johari said at the Sale and Purchase Agreement signing ceremony on Feb 12. According to media reports, some of the international destinations that AirBorneo is eyeing include Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Seoul and Frankfurt as the airline aims to operate as a full-service carrier. The full acquisition of MASwings Sdn Bhd by AirBorneo Holdings Sdn Bhd is expected to be finalised by Dec 31 this year, with no changes to the current Rural Air Services (RAS) operations. During the transition period, AirBorneo is working closely with MAG to ensure a seamless handover and to obtain necessary regulatory approvals from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom), the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The airline has established its headquarters in Kuching and begun recruiting key personnel. With Affin's extensive network and expertise, the state aims to unlock new opportunities, facilitate access to capital, and ignite entrepreneurial growth across sectors. Affin Bank's role in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is central to Sarawak's strategy. SMEs form the backbone of the state's economy, and Affin's suite of banking products, including trade finance and commercial lending, is expected to empower local businesses to scale and innovate. The acquisition also aligns with Sarawak's broader goal of diversifying its economy beyond natural resources. Strategic industries such as agro-based ventures, tourism, manufacturing, and green technology are poised to benefit from improved access to financing and tailored banking solutions. Affin Bank's expansion in Sarawak is already underway. The acquisition of Bintulu Port was deemed as a necessary step to streamline port operations and align them with Sarawak's development goals. Momentum accelerated in February 2024 when a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the federal Ministry of Transport and Sarawak's Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD). The MoU outlined the framework for transferring regulatory control and assets, including the repeal of the Bintulu Port Authority Act 1981 and the establishment of a new state-level authority. In July 2024, Parliament passed the Bintulu Port Authority (Dissolution) Bill and the Declaration of an Area in the Bintulu District to be a Federal Port (Repeal) Bill. These legislative milestones officially reclassified Bintulu Port as a state port, enabling Sarawak to govern it under the Port Authorities Ordinance 1961. Premier Abang Johari highlighted the economic significance of the acquisition, noting that Bintulu Port would play a central role in boosting Sarawak's commodities trade and export capacity. The launch of the Borneo Supply Base, designed to serve the petroleum industry, is expected to increase shipping activity and support the state's energy ambitions. The acquisition also includes a compensation agreement, with Sarawak set to pay the federal government for the transfer of port assets. This financial arrangement underscores the seriousness of the state's commitment to managing its infrastructure independently and responsibly. Looking ahead, Bintulu Port is poised to benefit from infrastructure upgrades and expanded services. The port will support bunkering for green fuels and serve as a terminal for LNG exports, aligning with Sarawak's push for sustainability and regional competitiveness. The port's transformation is part of a broader vision that includes the development of the Kuching Deep Water Port at Tanjung Embang, which will complement Bintulu's operations and position Sarawak as a maritime hub in Southeast Asia. The Sarawak government has ramped up staffing and budget allocations to ensure the port's successful integration into state systems. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said in May this year the takeover of Bintulu Port from federal jurisdiction to Sarawak is currently in the final stages of negotiations and the transfer is expected to take place in 2025. He said, with the approval of the Sarawak Port Authority Ordinance in May 2024, the Sarawak government is now moving towards the operation of a single port authority, the Sarawak Port Authority, which will have regulatory jurisdiction over all port activities in Sarawak. KL firm to pay RM6,799 for failing to honour warranty period
Lee says the KL-based computer company failed to honour the warranty on the graphics processing unit bought by him. A MAN who bought a used graphics processing unit (GPU) from a third-party reseller has successfully filed a claim with the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal after a company in Kuala Lumpur refused to honour the product's warranty. Lee Jia Chuin, 35, said he purchased the used GPU, also known as graphics card, for RM4,000 in cash from a seller in Taman Johor Jaya, Johor Baru, in October last year. He said the receipt given to him was the original receipt issued, to the first buyer, by a company dealing in computer peripherals and software, based at Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. 'Although I paid RM4,000 to the seller, the company did not issue any receipt or bill for that amount. 'Instead, I was given a receipt dated May 2022, with the price of RM6,799 as the amount,' he said when met outside the tribunal at Menara Ansar in Johor Baru. A GPU takes the burden of processing visual data from the CPU, allowing for smoother and faster rendering of graphics, especially in games and other graphically demanding applications. It typically includes memory chips, a processor core, video output connectors and a cooling system. Lee said the GPU carried a three-year warranty from the date of the original purchase in May 2022. On Feb 15, one of its three cooling fans malfunctioned. 'This led to reduced performance or, in other words, it slowed down and affected work,' he said. Lee returned the GPU to the reseller, who then forwarded it to the Kuala Lumpur-based company for repair, on March 4. 'The GPU was still under warranty and only expired in April 2025, but the company in Kuala Lumpur refused to fix the problems, citing that I bought it from a reseller,' Lee said. He claimed the company had deliberately delayed repairs even though it was aware the product was still under warranty. 'Another reason given by the company was that the serial numbers of the GPU did not tally with the original receipt,' he said, although he maintained that the serial numbers did match. Tribunal president Hafez Zalkapli ordered the company to refund RM6,799 to the claimant within two weeks. Sarawak unity drives sustainable growth towards 2030 vision
KUCHING: The unity of Sarawak's diverse communities remains the cornerstone of the state's progress as it advances towards becoming a high-income and developed region by 2030, said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Marking Sarawak Day 2025 under the theme 'Sarawak Maju Makmur' (Progressive and Prosperous Sarawak), he emphasised the state's commitment to inclusive growth through the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. 'The Sarawak government will continue implementing PCDS 2030 to ensure socio-economic prosperity for all,' he stated in a Facebook post by the Office of the Premier. The Premier also outlined key focus areas, including digital economy expansion, AI adoption, and sustainable environmental practices. Sectors like oil and gas, plantations, tourism, and modern agriculture will receive accelerated development to bolster economic resilience. Education remains a priority, with free higher education in selected fields at state-owned universities starting next year. 'This initiative allows students to focus on their studies while easing financial burdens on families,' he added.
