KL firm to pay RM6,799 for failing to honour warranty period

The Star21-07-2025
Lee says the KL-based computer company failed to honour the warranty on the graphics processing unit bought by him.
A MAN who bought a used graphics processing unit (GPU) from a third-party reseller has successfully filed a claim with the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal after a company in Kuala Lumpur refused to honour the product's warranty.
Lee Jia Chuin, 35, said he purchased the used GPU, also known as graphics card, for RM4,000 in cash from a seller in Taman Johor Jaya, Johor Baru, in October last year.
He said the receipt given to him was the original receipt issued, to the first buyer, by a company dealing in computer peripherals and software, based at Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.
'Although I paid RM4,000 to the seller, the company did not issue any receipt or bill for that amount.
'Instead, I was given a receipt dated May 2022, with the price of RM6,799 as the amount,' he said when met outside the tribunal at Menara Ansar in Johor Baru.
A GPU takes the burden of processing visual data from the CPU, allowing for smoother and faster rendering of graphics, especially in games and other graphically demanding applications.
It typically includes memory chips, a processor core, video output connectors and a cooling system.
Lee said the GPU carried a three-year warranty from the date of the original purchase in May 2022.
On Feb 15, one of its three cooling fans malfunctioned.
'This led to reduced performance or, in other words, it slowed down and affected work,' he said.
Lee returned the GPU to the reseller, who then forwarded it to the Kuala Lumpur-based company for repair, on March 4.
'The GPU was still under warranty and only expired in April 2025, but the company in Kuala Lumpur refused to fix the problems, citing that I bought it from a reseller,' Lee said.
He claimed the company had deliberately delayed repairs even though it was aware the product was still under warranty.
'Another reason given by the company was that the serial numbers of the GPU did not tally with the original receipt,' he said, although he maintained that the serial numbers did match.
Tribunal president Hafez Zalkapli ordered the company to refund RM6,799 to the claimant within two weeks.

Woman threatened by Ah Long after debt-ridden husband disappears

Michael Chong with a few of the victims at the press conference held at Wisma MCA in Kuala Lumpur. .—ONG SOON HIN/The Star Reporter : Gek San KUALA LUMPUR: A woman from Seri Kembangan is pleading for loan sharks to stop harassing her family after her husband absconded overseas, leaving behind unpaid debts and a trail of threats. The 29-year-old administrative executive who wanted to be known as Choo, said her 26-year-old husband was sent to Hong Kong by his company on June 18 and was supposed to return on July 16. However, he has been missing since and has not contacted his family. "He didn't tell me about the business trip, only my father-in-law. I only found out about his return date through his company," she said at a press conference on Wednesday (30 July), accompanied by MCA public services and complaints department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong. She said that from June 20, her family began receiving threatening calls from loan sharks, claiming her husband had borrowed RM2,000 and now owed them RM8,000 with interest. The callers threatened to splash red paint on their house and set it on fire. "We've been married for over a year and have a 15-month-old daughter. Despite asking him many times, he never told us why he needed to borrow money," she said. She added that the loan sharks also shared personal details and photos of her and her family on social media. A police report has been lodged. She added that earlier this year, her family had helped her husband settle a RM100,000 debt. Meanwhile, a 48-year-old woman from Cheras is also seeking help after her family was harassed over her son's borrowings from loan sharks. The woman known as Wong, a labourer, said her 26-year-old son, a salesman, had taken out loans in the past, which the family had helped to pay off, namely RM5,000 in 2019 and RM22,500 in April 2025. She said Chong had assisted in negotiating both settlements. After the second incident, the son moved out of the family home. However, in June 2025, the family began receiving threatening messages, including a video of a car on fire. The mother later discovered that her son had borrowed an unknown amount of money from loan sharks again in July 2025.

JB medical practitioner loses over RM8mil to investment scam

JOHOR BARU: A medical practitioner lost more than RM8mil of her savings after being scammed to invest in a bogus online stock investment scheme. Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the victim, a 53-year-old female, lodged a police report on Tuesday (July 29) claiming she had been scammed of her savings amounting to RM8.7mil. 'According to the victim, in April this year, she came across an investment advertisement on social media that promised high returns. She became interested and contacted the suspect to find out more about it. 'The victim was offered profits of up to 520% from the total amount of investments she made,' he said in a statement here on Wednesday (July 30). ACP Raub added that believing the profits that she would get, from May until this month, she made payments of RM8.7mil to several bank accounts as instructed by the suspect. He said from the total amount of investments she had made, the victim only received about RM6,033 in profit. 'When the victim wants to withdraw her funds and profits, the suspect forced her to pay another RM500,000 as a deposit and even threatened that her account would be frozen. 'This made the victim realise that she had been cheated before lodging a police report,' he said adding that the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. ACP Raub urged the public to be vigilant against online investment scams that promise unrealistic returns within a short period of time. 'Anybody can be a victim of scammers no matter their status or career. They should always be careful when come across investment opportunities especially on social media,' he added. He said the public should follow the Royal Malaysia Police's commercial crime investigation unit social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok for updates on the latest scam tactics.
