Palestinian issue: MAPIM sends urgent appeal

The Sun26-04-2025
SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisation (MAPIM) has sent letters to the leaders of three major world powers - China, Russia, and India - last week, seeking their attention and support for the cause of the Palestinian people.
Its president Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid said the initiative was part of MAPIM's ongoing efforts to engage global powers in urging the Zionist regime to immediately cease its atrocities against the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza.
'The essence of the letter primarily highlights the increasingly dire situation facing the people of Gaza. MAPIM believes that the Palestinian cause urgently requires the intervention of China, Russia, and India, whose collective influence could exert pressure on Israel and the United States.
'They must play an active role in maintaining continuous pressure, and, at the very least, insist on the immediate opening of the Rafah border to facilitate the delivery of food and medical aid,' he told Bernama here, today.
Last week, MAPIM addressed a formal letter to three world leaders - Chinese President Xi Jinping; Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi - appealing for their attention and action on the Palestinian issue.
Mohd Azmi further said that MAPIM intends to hold a meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the near future to discuss the strategic direction of Malaysia's aid efforts for Palestine.
He said that Egypt's efforts to pressure Israel and the United States had shown signs of progress toward reopening the Rafah border crossing, and that this matter will also be brought to the attention of the Prime Minister, with the hope that Malaysia can lend its voice of support.
'To date, 500 MAPIM aid trucks remain stranded at the Rafah border, in addition to 50 containers filled with food, medical supplies, tents, and other essential items which had initially arrived in Egypt,' he said.
Earlier, Mohd Azmi attended the Aidilfitri gathering and delivered the keynote speech at the annual general meeting of the Forum Ekonomi Manusiawi (FEM), at the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam Mosque, here.
More than 50 participants attended the forum, which focused on the socio-geopolitical landscape of the country, particularly in light of the ongoing crisis in the cultural and intellectual leadership, among both political leaders and the community.

Ukraine will not pull its forces out of Donbas, Zelenskiy says

FILE PHOTO: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy looks on during a visit to a military training area to find out about the training of Ukrainian soldiers on the Patriot missile system, at an undisclosed location in Germany, June 11, 2024. Jens Buttner/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo KYIV (Reuters) -President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Tuesday he would reject any Russian proposal to pull Ukrainian troops out of the eastern Donbas region as it would deprive Kyiv of defensive lines and open the way for Moscow to conduct further offensives. The Ukrainian leader told reporters that territorial issues should be discussed after Russia agrees to a ceasefire, and security guarantees for Ukraine should be an integral part of that discussion. Speaking ahead of a summit on Friday between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Zelenskiy also reiterated that Ukraine must be involved in any talks concerning its own territory. Trump has suggested an exchange of territory might be part of any putative peace deal. Zelenskiy said Russia's proposal was to halt its advances in other Ukrainian regions in exchange for Kyiv pulling back its forces from the Donbas in eastern Ukraine, which comprises the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. Zelenskiy said Ukraine still controlled about 30% of the Donetsk region, or about 9,000 square kilometers, and had heavily fortified defensive lines and controlled strategic high ground there. Any pullout would create a launch pad for new Russian offensives, he said. "Putin will have an open way to both Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro regions. Also for Kharkiv," Zelenskiy said. "The territorial issue cannot be separated from security guarantees." (Reporting by Olena HarmashEditing by Gareth Jones)

Bersatu wing tells govt Indian MPs to quit over Mitra's failure

Bersatu associate wing vice-chief R Sri Sanjeevan called for a forensic audit to be conducted on all of Mitra's expenditure since its establishment. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A Bersatu associate wing leader says government Indian MPs who lack the courage to speak up about the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) should resign immediately following a DAP lawmaker's view that Mitra had failed to help Indians most in need. Earlier today, Klang MP V Ganabatirau told the Dewan Rakyat that Mitra had been hampered by frequent leadership changes, bureaucracy and the lack of long-term planning. He also said funds often failed to reach those most in need and accused some ministries of treating Mitra as an 'emergency fund' rather than a proper development agency. In a statement, Bersatu associate wing vice-chief R Sri Sanjeevan said Ganabatirau's admission confirmed that Mitra had become a 'political tool and a crony project hub, not a saviour for the community'. 'This is not just Mitra's failure – this is a moral failure of all Indian elected representatives in the government,' said Sanjeevan. 'They were chosen to be the voice of the people, but in the end, they have become enablers of weaknesses and abuse of power. 'Indian MPs in the government who lack the courage to speak up should immediately resign. Don't put on a show pretending to speak out about Mitra just to gain popularity and votes from the Indian community.' Apart from calling for a forensic audit to be conducted on all of Mitra's expenditure since its establishment, Sanjeevan also said all Mitra projects that had failed to meet their objectives should be made public. Last week, Mitra chairman P Prabakaran said the agency's past failures were due to a lack of continuity, which he said disrupted long-term efforts to uplift the Indian community. Prabakaran told the Dewan Rakyat that over the past decade, Mitra and its predecessor, the Socioeconomic Development of the Indian Community Unit, had seen frequent changes in leadership and policies. However, Prabakaran said under his tenure, he had ensured that Mitra's direction was aligned with national policies – and not individual preferences. The Batu MP took over as Mitra chairman in February 2024.

Factbox-How much territory does Russia control in Ukraine?

LONDON (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump has said that both Kyiv and Moscow will have to cede territory to end the war in Ukraine, so how much territory does Russia control in Ukraine? Russia controls nearly 114,500 square km (44,600 square miles), or 19%, of Ukraine, including Crimea, and a major chunk of territory in the east and south-east of the country, according to open source maps of the battlefield. Ukraine does not control any internationally recognised Russian territory. Russia says Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson - which were recognised by Moscow as part of Ukraine as the Soviet Union collapsed - are now parts of Russia. Ukraine has repeatedly said it will never recognise Russian occupation of its land, and most countries recognise Ukraine's territory within its 1991 borders. Following are details on the territory, Russian claims and Ukraine's position. CRIMEA Russian forces in 2014 took control of Crimea, which juts out into the Black Sea off southern Ukraine, and after a disputed referendum on joining Russia, Moscow absorbed the region into Russia. Its area is about 27,000 square km. Russia says Crimea is legally part of Russia. Ukraine's position is that Crimea is part of Ukraine, though privately some Ukrainian officials admit that it would be very hard to return Crimea to Ukrainian control by force. Crimea was absorbed into the Russian empire by Catherine the Great in the 18th century. Russia's Black Sea naval base at Sevastopol was founded soon afterwards. In 1921, Crimea became part of Russia within the Soviet Union until 1954, when it was handed to Ukraine, also then a Soviet republic, by Communist Party chief Nikita Khrushchev, an ethnic Ukrainian. DONBAS Russia controls about 46,570 square km, or 88%, of the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, including all of the Luhansk region and 75% of the Donetsk region. About 6,600 square km is still controlled by Ukraine but Russia has been focusing most of its energy along the front in Donetsk, pushing towards the last remaining major cities. Russian-backed separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions broke away from Ukrainian government control in 2014 and proclaimed themselves independent "people's republics". Putin in 2022 recognised them as independent states just days before the invasion of Ukraine. ZAPORIZHZHIA AND KHERSON Russian forces control about 74% of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions of southeastern Ukraine, or about 41,176 square km. Ukraine controls about 14,500 square km across the two regions. Putin in 2024 said that he would be willing to agree peace if Ukraine withdrew from all regions claimed but not fully controlled by Russia - an area currently of about 21,000 square km - and officially renounced its ambitions to join NATO. Reuters reported in 2024 that Putin was open to discussing a Ukraine ceasefire deal with Trump but ruled out making any major territorial concessions and insisted that Kyiv abandon ambitions to join NATO. Two sources said Putin might be willing to withdraw from the relatively small patches of territory it holds in other areas of Ukraine. Putin's conditions for peace include a legally binding pledge that NATO will not expand eastwards, Ukrainian neutrality and limits on its armed forces, protection for Russian speakers who live there, and acceptance of Russia's territorial gains, sources told Reuters earlier this year. KHARKIV, SUMY AND DNIPROPETROVSK Russia also controls small parts of the Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions of Ukraine. Across the Sumy and Kharkiv regions, Russia controls about 400 square km of territory. In Dnipropetrovsk, Russia has a tiny area near the border. Russia has said it is carving out a buffer zone in Sumy to protect its Kursk region from Ukrainian attack. LEGAL STATUS OF THE TERRITORIES Russia classes the Republic of Crimea, Sevastopol, the Luhansk People's Republic, the Donetsk People's Republic, and the regions of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson as subjects of the Russian Federation. Ukraine says the territories are part of Ukraine. Most countries do not recognise the areas as part of Russia but some do. Crimea has been recognised by Syria, North Korea and Nicaragua. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 2014 the annexation illegal and recognised Crimea as part of Ukraine. The resolution was opposed by 11 countries. Putin has repeatedly compared the fate of Kosovo and Crimea. He has accused the West of having double standards for recognising Kosovo as an independent country in 2008 against the wishes of Serbia but opposing the recognition of Crimea. Russia opposed the independence of Kosovo. (Reporting by Guy FaulconbridgeEditing by Andrew Osborn and Gareth Jones)
