
How to build AI people actually want, according to the product lead for Amazon Alexa
AI is in our pockets, homes and workplaces, not just the lab, Amazon Alexa product lead Abhai Pratap Singh told Technical.ly, Temple University Entrepreneurship Academy Director Geoff DiMasi and a live audience during the Innovation Leaders Speaker Series.
The tech is no longer distinguishable from our everyday lives, he said — even though many US residents don't realize how often they're using it, per a Gallup poll published in January.
Instead of focusing on products that look impressive in demo presentations, Singh suggested, AI development should focus on enhancing human lives in meaningful ways. The process starts from the earliest stages of product development.
'This isn't just about making customers happier, though that matters,' Singh said, a reflection of his personal views and not the official position of where he works. 'It's about creating products that deliver on the business promise, rather than just creating digital dust where no user uses those products.'
Product managers can't do that alone. The widespread application of AI also pushes the technical team building it to lean into other departments for feedback. Singh calls this process 'evaluations,' or creating a common language across teams to communicate progress to 'bridge the communication gaps between product managers, scientists and engineers.'
'To build AI that truly serves customers,' Singh said, 'make sure they're not an afterthought.'
Build for humans, not just technical gains
Instead of setting out to build something with AI, Singh advised, find a problem that needs a solution. Product managers tend to focus on 'building the most shiny artifact' when they should be honing in on shipping a product that serves customers, he said.
AI brings additional considerations compared to other types of product development. When building an LLM that directly interfaces with the user, product managers need to consider that people treat a machine differently than they might treat each other in conversation, Singh said.
'Your training data defines the actual experience and how this experience will work,' he said, 'not just for a certain set of users, but for everyone.'
On top of tackling all of the above, product managers have a budget to stick to. Even though AI is becoming more affordable, keep in mind how much the business is willing to spend while aiming for ambitious goals, Singh said.
These are all principles evident in the team's latest rollout, the Alexa Plus. The tech giant promises a 'smarter, more conversational, more capable' AI assistant built on each individual's personalized preferences. The AI device can control a home's other smart devices based on its residents' routines, learn a user's favorite movies and buy concert tickets for the customer based on their most-listened artists.
The new design has been criticized for having fewer data privacy options. The topic remains a concern for the general population, which could cause Alexa Plus to face some reputational hurdles.
Understand what a user's first impression of the product will be
First impressions can determine whether an AI product will sink or swim, Singh said, and product managers have a wide range of scenarios and users to appeal to.
When interacting with an LLM, context matters. 'Technically capable but humanly awkward' can prevent users from fully embracing a product, according to Singh.
Too often, 'each interaction is treated as isolated and optimizing for accuracy on individual prompts without considering the broader user journey or situation in which they're trying to achieve that task,' Singh said.
For example, if a user is cooking, the AI product shouldn't expect them to use a hands-on interface. It should know that the person relies on audio, voice and quick glances to get the information they need, and adjust accordingly, according to Singh.
As the general population knows more about AI, data security and ethics have also become a part of a good first impression.
Those problems are difficult to solve, but keeping it in mind from the get-go — along with all of the other customer-first priorities — can help, Singh said.
'Build ethics into your process from day one,' Singh said. 'Ensure that there [are] privacy and ethical considerations built in for the product.'

Pennsylvania government agencies aim to expand employees' use of artificial intelligence
Pennsylvania is pushing to expand the use of artificial intelligence tools in government agencies, and local governments are set to follow suit. For local and state agencies, it's a way to ease the workload by directing artificial intelligence to complete routine tasks that would otherwise take hours — at the cost of tens of thousands of dollars. As Pennsylvania leaders aspire to set the state up as an AI and data center hub, the commonwealth is one of the first states to examine generative AI usage across the state government. The state launched a year-long generative AI pilot program last January, with 175 employees across 14 agencies incorporating ChatGPT Enterprise into their work, including brainstorming ideas or proofreading documents. 'The most frequent uses of ChatGPT among employees in the pilot were tasks like writing assistance, research, brainstorming, and summarizing large amounts of text or data — all of which can be applied broadly across our workforce,' said Dan Egan, communications director for the Office of Administration. The state paid $108,000 for the ChatGPT Enterprise licenses, training, and support for the pilot program. OpenAI even cited Pennsylvania's pilot program in a press release announcing ChatGPT Gov, designed specifically for government use. A majority of employees in the pilot reported a positive experience and saved an average of 95 minutes per day using it — results that encouraged the state to do more with artificial intelligence. 'We want to provide more employees with responsible access to AI-powered tools when those tools can help employees work more effectively and efficiently,' Egan said. 'We are currently exploring ways to expand access to these tools to employees.' He added that training on 'safe and responsible AI use' will be a prerequisite for any state employees to use AI tools. But experts warn that AI, particularly generative AI — which outputs text, images, and even videos based on prompts users put in — poses a host of risks and ethical considerations. Generative AI has a tendency to create falsehoods and present them as facts, a process known as hallucinating. 'You have to understand that generative AI in particular, it can be incorrect,' said Cole Gessner, responsible AI program manager at Carnegie Mellon University's Block Center for Technology and Society. 'You have to treat it almost like it's a summer intern, right? You have to double check its work.' The Block Center advised the state on implementing AI in its pilot program and has worked with government leaders across Pennsylvania. Now, the state Department of Human Services is considering the use of AI. 'The Department of Human Services is exploring opportunities to responsibly use AI to drive efficiencies that promote an employee-first approach,' DHS press secretary Brandon Cwalina said. 'As with any emerging technology, we have policies and oversight in place to guide its responsible use, and we will continue to assess advancements that may support our work.' Currently, the commonwealth's AI policy prohibits using generative AI to make decisions for employees and requires the user to review and verify anything created by generative AI. It also prohibits putting any private data or information into generative AI tools. All state IT policies are reviewed on an annual basis, and the commonwealth's AI policy is set to be reviewed in March. While the state has a policy in place, most local governments don't have specific guidelines for how to handle AI use. Allegheny County is an exception: it's developing an AI policy with hopes of finalizing it this year, said county spokesperson Abigail Gardner. Gov. Josh Shapiro signed an executive order in 2023 establishing standards for generative AI use in state government. It also created a Generative AI Governing Board to oversee policy and implementation. In March, he created a Generative AI Labor and Management Collaboration Group, which takes input from employees and labor representatives when considering AI use in government. 'The Shapiro Administration has consistently emphasized that generative AI is not a replacement for the knowledge and experience of Commonwealth employees,' Egan said. And while the statewide move to incorporate generative AI is new, AI has been used in government for years. Climate modeling, for example, has relied on machines locating patterns and analyzing large data sets, said Cole von Glahn, senior technology policy analyst at the Environmental Policy Innovation Center. 'A lot of what we do in the world relies on deep learning techniques that have been around for a very long time,' von Glahn said. 'The generative AI side of things, I think, is much more experimental. I can see ways in which it can be useful in government. Right now, I'm not convinced that those ways outweigh the risks.' But for some elected officials, artificial intelligence is a promising tool to streamline bureaucratic processes, especially permitting. 'If you think about applying for a permit, it's going to be the same 12 boxes that everybody has to fill out. There are rules about how these things are analyzed by people,' von Glahn said. 'You can translate that to the way the machine would be looking at it.' Rep. Jason Ortitay (R., Allegheny/Washington) hopes to launch a pilot program at a Department of Environmental Protection district office to test how AI could be used to process permit applications. 'It's got to be piloted and it's got to be tried and then trusted before it's adopted on a much broader scale,' he said. 'What you don't want to happen is you implement it and it causes all sorts of chaos, because that's not the whole point of it. The point is to make it better, streamlined, more efficient.' He plans to discuss it with the DEP and Shapiro's office after the state budget is finalized. The Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh is also examining the use of AI to streamline processes, specifically with housing applications. HACP is finalizing a contract with an AI company that partners with public housing authorities, to implement AI in the processing of recertifications. HAPC has around 5,100 tenants and most recertify every two years. The yearlong pilot program is likely to begin this year, said Monty Ayyash, HACP's senior IT director. The HACP approved a payment of around $160,000 for the AI in June with an estimation that it would reduce processing times by up to 50% and backlog by up to 75%. The HACP also launched a one-year pilot of Google Gemini for 60 of its employees in April. So far, employees have mainly used it to optimize communication, such as drafting internal documents or suggesting improvements to emails, Ayyash said. 'We're adding the AI component very conservatively,' he said. 'We are monitoring any sort of behavior that might indicate that it could really challenge the actual day-to-day business operations that our employees are used to doing, so we don't want to stop them from getting their job done in place of learning AI.'

Northeast Philly entrepreneur's mission: Natural hair beauty without the hype
If there's one thing natural haircare entrepreneur Ciera Solomon-Mouzon isn't trying to do, it's sell bottled hype. The Northeast Philly cosmetologist and 19-year civic employee for Pennsylvania Veterans Affairs started her Black hair care business, Royalties of Essence, out of her kitchen in 2021. In an industry that, she says, thrives as scroll-stopping TikTok Tok ads with too-good-to-be-true claims, Royalties of Essence takes a different path: carefully formulated plant-based products and tested in the real world by Solomon-Mouzan herself. The products, including scalp oil, hairstyling cream and growth-encouraging shampoo and conditioner, are only one part of the holistic plan. 'It's not just getting that product,' Solomon-Mouzan told 'It's about your routine.' At its heart, Solomon-Mouzan's journey is about challenging the quick-fix culture of the haircare industry and keeping it real. Inspiration from customers — and her own daughter As a cosmetologist and mom, Solomon-Mouzan noticed gaps in available products for textured hair. Many of her clients, as well as her daughter, struggled with hair growth, and the products on the market often contained chemicals not beneficial for textured hair health. It started with her experimenting with natural oils, and turned into product development. 'I did a lot of research,' she said. 'I wanted to make sure that everything was formulated correctly.' After sourcing ingredients with the help of a cosmetic chemist, she tested her first product on herself, applying the scalp oil to her edges — the fine hairs along the hairline — after they had thinned a bit from wearing braids. 'I noticed that it helped with my edges, that's how I knew it worked,' Solomon-Mouzan said. She built Royalties of Essence one customer at a time, often face-to-face at local pop-ups around the Northeast and community events in Philadelphia, where she built a reputation through word of mouth. Her first customers came from the local community where she was born and raised, and where she plans to grow the business. 4 years of bootstrapping and leveraging social media Just as haircare takes time, patience and a good routine, building Royalties of Essence has been on the slow and steady since releasing its Triple Nourishing Scalp Oil four years ago. Solomon-Mouzan has bootstrapped the business, avoiding the debt that comes from loans. In the beginning, it was an offshoot of her home-based cosmetology business. For a while, she utilized space set up for small businesses at malls, including Willow Grove Park and Morristown Mall, something she hopes to go back to. For now, most of her sales are done through ecommerce, between her own website, Etsy, Amazon and Walmart's online marketplace. Social media is also central to the business, especially as Solomon-Mouzon starts to create content that lays out her holistic approach, beyond simply marketing the products. 'I use Facebook and Instagram a lot, and I've started putting more into TikTok,' she said, noting that she's still experimenting to see which platforms deliver the best results. Solomon-Mouzon's next big goal is to secure wholesale contracts, getting her products into salons and back into retail spaces. 'I really want a couple of wholesale contracts because that's guaranteed money every month,' she said. She also envisions offering hair styling services again and eventually expanding her retail presence, but always in a way that stays true to her local, plant-based, results-driven philosophy. 'I wanted to create products for ethnic hair that will help our hair to thrive and grow,' said Solomon-Mouzon. 'That's something that we need.'

Recent grads get a chance to ‘impact millions' at Maryland IT department
For today's college graduates, the job market is far from stable. Tech hiring has slowed, and tariffs under the Trump administration have led to broader market uncertainty, making it harder for recent graduates to secure entry-level positions. Unemployment among 22- to 27-year-olds with degrees reached its highest level in more than a decade in April, excluding the pandemic. In this challenging environment, the Tysons, Virginia-based NobleReach Foundation is trying to help recent STEM graduates connect with public-sector opportunities through its scholars program. Earlier this month, the nonprofit announced its second class of 28 scholars, who will spend a year working with government agencies and mission-driven private sector partners across the country. The program focuses on four tracks of roles: artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, business process innovation and materials manufacturing. Rebeca Lamadrid, senior vice president of talent programs at NobleReach, described the program as a way to strengthen collaboration between industry and government while building a pipeline of talent for government roles. 'It is critical that our governments at every level are able to pick up and ensure that they're providing citizens the type of service delivery, the type of infrastructure that the current technology allows,' Lamadrid told 'All of that starts with people … and getting folks that may not necessarily think about the power of public service to be considering these types of job opportunities.' The inaugural class worked at federal departments and industry partners. This year the program expanded to include state and local governments. Lamadrid explained that the change allows the scholars' work to have a more direct impact on the public. 'It's a lot more tangible, the work that you get to do and how you get to impact millions of people,' Lamadrid said. Building the public sector pipeline Federal agencies cover their scholars' salaries, while some state and local partners receive grants from NobleReach to support their positions. The first class still has a few weeks left in its fellowship, some participants plan to continue working in government — even though federal constraints make it difficult for others to do so, according to Lamadrid. The program also offers professional development support, starting with a two-week bootcamp that covers frameworks such as human-centered design, which scholars can apply to solving public sector challenges. Pulkit Sharma and Thomas Thompson recently joined the scholars program. Sharma is a graduate of Mount Saint Mary's University, and Thompson graduated from Old Dominion University. Both will work as analysts on the team at the Maryland Department of Information Technology's (DoIT) Security Operations Center, a resource for state and local agencies to report cybersecurity incidents. The center shares its name and acronym with a descriptor for analysts doing similar work throughout the public and private sectors. For instance, Sharma previously worked as an SOC analyst at his university, but didn't consider state government opportunities before stumbling on the scholars program while job hunting. 'NobleReach really opened up my eyes,' Sharma said. 'Originally with cyber, I was looking at federal or private sector opportunities, but being able to really go deep into public service [at Maryland DoIT] is awesome, honestly.' Before joining the program, Thompson worked as a desktop support specialist at LCG, Inc, a technology consulting service. He enjoyed helping people with everyday challenges, such as setting up monitors or resetting passwords, and is excited to continue serving the public in his new role. 'The things I was doing weren't making a huge difference … but just to fill in those gaps of their daily lives and really make things easier for them was a gratifying moment,' Thompson said. Katie Savage, Secretary of the Maryland DoIT, emphasized that the program is mutually beneficial and underscores the importance of building a pipeline for future government talent. ' People don't always see government as a noble profession anymore,' Savage said. 'Oftentimes it can be seen as bureaucracy, but we have such power and deliver so many services.'
