According to Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp (via Fightful Select), Danhausen's AEW contract was set to expire on July 1. However, months were added to his contract due to injury time, which keeps him with the company until 2026. Sapp states Danhausen had requested the company not to pick up this option if they didn't have anything creative for him, but they did anyway. How ‘The Day of the Jackal' Team Brought a 'Semi-Derelict' Border Building Back to Life: 'This Was a Huge Undertaking'

The Day of the Jackal cinematographer Christopher Ross started his work on the Peacock series about an assassin named the Jackal (Eddie Redmayne) with a bang — no pun intended. In episode one, which was nominated for an Emmy for cinematography, the Jackal wounds the son of far-right German politician Manfred Fest — but it's all a ploy to lure Fest to his son's hospital bedside so the Jackal can assassinate him with a record long-distance sniper shot. 'Trial by fire,' jokes Ross of the assassination scene — the first scene he shot. (Last year, he received an Emmy nomination for his work on Shogun.) The sequence was composed of four sections, filmed in Budapest, Hungary, and Vienna, Austria. On the same day, Ross and his team also captured a scene demonstrating how the Jackal turns his suitcase into a sniper rifle. 'Eddie and I bonded over a love of meticulous prep,' Ross says of his first day of work. 'We had two suitcases constructed that could be turned into the gun — Eddie had one in his hotel room for a couple of weeks before we shot, and he would repetitively rebuild this gun, taking out the wheels, finding the bullets, taking out the handles. In reality, the building of the gun took about 15 minutes from an empty suitcase, and the idea was to truncate that period into these elegant nuggets of precision.' While Redmayne prepped for his role by attending 'sniper school,' Ross had to learn the characteristics of each weapon so he would know how to lens them properly. 'We ended up using a number of different lenses,' he explains. 'The actual Fest killing in episode one was photographed from the roof of the Hungarian National Theatre. It was a building that was 1,640 feet away from the hospital that we were filming at for the assassination, and we placed a 1,200mm lens with a 1.4 extender, so that makes it sort of 1,600mm long, on a stabilized head. I operated the stabilized head remotely to try to smoothly track as a sniper would. It was channeling everything based on the character.' Ross took home a unique souvenir: 'There is a medical device known as a laparoscope, which is for looking down your throat at your larynx. It's the only optical device that's narrow enough to fit down the barrel of a gun,' he notes. 'I have one of the world's only motion picture laparoscopes because I bought one specifically for The Day of the Jackal to analyze the rifling of the gun, but we never ended up doing it. I have a memento.' There were challenging shots aplenty for Ross, and while he credits the opening scene as the most difficult in terms of camera moves, the border crossing, in which the Jackal is stopped while attempting to enter France after the assassination, was logistically difficult, he says. 'It was written as a fairly brief scene, where the Jackal goes to the border and there's a temporary arrangement, but [episode director] Brian Kirk wanted this scene to be sort of an indicator: Is this the first mistake the Jackal has made?' he says. 'It runs about three minutes, and the script was about a page, so it was elongated quite a bit for tension purposes. We filmed it at the Hungarian and Austrian border, both member states of the EU now, but they weren't previously, and we were at some semi-derelict building at the border crossing that we had to bring to life. It sits on the side of the motorway these days as a completely disused set of buildings.' The crew repowered the buildings and all of its traffic lights: 'Every red cross and green arrow has been designed by the art department and built by practical electricians,' Ross explains. 'All the vehicles are brought in. This was a huge, huge undertaking. There are only six lines of dialogue in the sequence, but the power of the sequence is entirely in the crafts department delivering big.' But while Ross had to capture big moments, he also had to lens smaller, intimate ones, including one where the Jackal takes off his disguise prosthetics in the mirror, requiring a very tight shot. The scene had to be carefully framed after the team built a mirror image of the bathroom with a body double for Redmayne. It was filmed over a six-hour period. 'There are a couple of Probe Lens shots in there for being able to get right up to his contact lens and see the color change in his irises,' Ross explains of the scene in which the Jackal, disguised as an elderly janitor in an office, takes off his prosthetics after completing his mission. 'Then, on top of that,' he adds, 'we built a mirror image of the room on the far side of the bathroom and removed the mirror so that the final shot is the camera passing through the mirror and out into the room with him as he returns into the kitchen, as a subliminal trick to fool the audience. It's a technique that was brilliantly used by Robert Zemeckis in [1997's] Contact and Mathieu Kassovitz in [1995's] La Haine, and Brian and I thought it would be a fun little trick to play on the audience.' The scene was meant to be 'unsettlingly playful,' mirroring the show's main character. 'Brian's idea with the show was that it's about liars that lie about everything all the time, and so the idea was that we as storytellers would also be lying to the audience — that even the camera was an unreliable narrator,' Ross explains. Her recent Roku docuseries, Solo Traveling, shows her full commitment to it, including an extensive in-flight body care routine complete with thigh-high compression socks, a lymphatic drainage massage, face masks, and a portable atomizer. 'I want to be the poster child for being and inhabiting your own skin,' Ross says on the show. Her new Pattern body care line aims to help others do just that. When she launched the curl-conscious Pattern products in 2019, body care was always on the horizon. 'It's the reason I named the company Pattern Beauty and not Pattern Hair,' Ross tells ELLE. '[These products are] for every body, shape, size, color, and texture.' The new line, out on August 21, features a body wash, exfoliating dry body scrub, lotion, body cream, and a body oil. 'I want you to be able to use these products and remember who you are,' she says. Ahead, Ross on whether she uses perfume on planes, her full pool-day skin care routine, and her thoughts on the closing of Ami Colé. I have a real thing about essential oils. I love fragrance that feels anchored in truth and doesn't feel commercial or top note-y, and will remain the same fragrance over time. It bugs me when you spray a perfume, and 10 hours later, it smells like something different. An essential oil is alive, but it's not going to transform into something else. I was looking for a scent that was genderless, inviting, and delicious, but not to the point of a gourmand. I didn't want it to feel like you want to eat your arm. I want it to feel elevated, sexy, inviting, and universal so that everyone who smelled it would be like, I like that. I don't wear perfume. ​​I think people who over-perfume and over-cologne are problematic. I understand that we all love our own fragrance, but when you wear it, you stop being able to smell it. I will admit that I have been the culprit at times, but what you don't want is to hug someone and then for the rest of the day smell like them. It's awful. What body care product do you make sure to put in your carry-on? Lotion and my shower gel. I usually have those two body products, an exfoliating mitt, a gua sha, and a dry brush. I'm sorry, but hotel shower gel is not the same. It strips your skin of everything. I love dry brushing because of lymphatic drainage. At this age and with the amount that I travel, my body holds on to water, and dry brushing really helps me to release. Also, I don't drink coffee, so waking up my lymphatic and nervous system with [brushing] really helps. Sometimes, I'll dry brush in the bed before I get up in the morning or [even] on the airplane. Someone sitting next to me took their shoes off, which I thought was ridiculous. I'm talking barefoot. No socks. I was just like, I don't need to see your toes, sir. A white Asics sneaker. I can dress it up. I can dress it down. It's comfortable. It's between that or a black leather Birkenstock. You can wear a white Asics sneaker with a beautiful pair of trousers, or you can wear them with a suit. Oh gosh, yes! You've got to prep to be outside; you can't just go outside. Hair takes a backseat, because we're going to get into the water, and it's going to get wet. But the skin needs to be skinning for the pool. I do the full Pattern body care routine, but I don't use the cream. I save the cream for nighttime after the sun. I usually dry scrub in the shower so that any of the mess is not all over my bathroom. Then I use the body scrub, ​​and I scrub from my toes to my neck. I scrub everywhere! Then I put on the shower gel, get the razor, and we shave. I shave the legs, and then we shower gel one more time. Then I use the body oil while I'm still in the shower. ​​When I get out, I either let myself air dry or I pat myself dry. Then I use lotion and finish with sunblock. Because my pores are open after the shower and can really receive the moisture. And even though this is not a very greasy oil, I'm very conscious of not getting oil on my clothes or bathing suit. Scrub, hydrate, and love it. I want that skin to pop, glow, and look like an expression and reflection of your soul! I really love a bath! Sometimes, I make crystal soup, which is when I put my crystals in the bath with me. I have a lot of thoughts. It's very upsetting when a great brand is forced to shut down. Black founders in the beauty industry face particular challenges that go beyond just financial support. Access to capital is really a crucial part of growth, but there's also a lot of valuable insight that Black founders contribute to the industry that isn't accounted for. How we measure success needs to be adjusted. For example, a Black-founded business might contribute lower numbers in sales, but it doesn't represent the entire revenue stream. Retail partners benefit from the brand bringing in completely new customers, broadening the appeal of a retailer, and making it more accessible to a larger customer base. These are things that benefit the business and the beauty industry as a whole, even though it might not compare in the number value. It's really important for consumers to understand that a Black-founded business doesn't mean that the product that they make is just for Black customers. The full ecosystem benefits by having a diversity of founders of all kinds. I would like to see an understanding where investors and partners recognize that supporting Black founders is more than just offering funds. It involves fostering an environment of collaboration, respect, and open dialogue that is essential for navigating the complexities of the business. If you start with a diverse line of makeup, what does it look like to grow? How do you do that? That is the job of the people around that founder. Navigating the pitfalls of an industry, let alone one that has systemic barriers, is not easy. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.
