FC Goa strike late to pip Punjab in Kalinga Super Cup

Bhubaneswar, Apr 26 (UNI) FC Goa produced a sensational late comeback to defeat Punjab FC 2-1 in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Kalinga Super Cup at the Kalinga Stadium here on Saturday night.
The win helped the Gaurs book a semi-final date with Mohun Bagan Super Giant, which will be played on April 30.
Punjab FC, who had taken the lead early in the second half through Ezequiel Vidal (57'), looked set for a famous win.
However, two quickfire goals in the space of three minutes from Borja Herrera and Mohammed Yasir in the dying minutes turned the game on its head, leaving Punjab heartbroken.
The match kicked off with Punjab FC showing greater urgency and attacking intent. Their forwards pressed high and tested the FC Goa defence, creating the first real chance of the game in the ninth minute.
Vidal's corner found Nikhil Prabhu, whose header forced a sharp save from Goa's goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari.
Punjab remained compact defensively as well, successfully keeping FC Goa's talisman Iker Guarrotxena quiet throughout the first half. The Spaniard, who had been a key figure for the Gaurs all season, found little room to operate against a disciplined Punjab backline.
FC Goa, on the other hand, took time to settle down and their first major opportunity came in the 18th minute following a delightful team move. Udanta Singh found himself on the end of the final pass but failed to hit the target.
Minutes later, Borja saw his shot saved by Muheet Shabir, and although Guarrotxena latched onto the rebound, his effort was blocked amidst appeals for a handball, which the referee waved away.
With the first half ending goalless, both sides regrouped, but it was Punjab FC who struck first. In the 57th minute, Muhammad Suhail unleashed a left-footed effort from distance that rattled the post. Vidal reacted quickest to the rebound, slotting home to give Punjab a deserved lead.
FC Goa, now chasing the game, struggled to break down Punjab's defence, which remained resolute as the clock ticked towards full-time. Despite Goa's growing possession, Punjab appeared to have done enough to see the match out.
But football can be cruel, and in the 89th minute, Punjab's resistance was finally broken. Substitute Brison Fernandes swung in a cross from the right that Ashish Pradhan failed to clear properly. The loose ball fell to Borja, who finished clinically into the bottom right corner to level the score.
Barely three minutes later, disaster struck for Punjab again. Dejan Drazic's floated cross from the left found Punjab defender Pramveer in position to clear, but his weak header dropped invitingly to Yasir. The FC Goa midfielder rifled a venomous shot into the net to complete a stunning turnaround.
To compound Punjab's misery, Pramveer received his second yellow card in stoppage time and was sent off, ending a night to forget for the defender.
Borja Herrera was handed the Kalinga Player of the Match award by Amit Kumar Nayak, OAS, Deputy Secretary to Sports and Youth Services Department, Government of Odisha.

Biggest Upset Of Durand Cup! Diamond Harbour FC Ends Jamshedpur FC's Run In QF

Debutants Diamond Harbour FC upset Jamshedpur FC 2-0 in the Durand Cup quarterfinals, securing their semifinal spot. Debutants Diamond Harbour FC scripted the biggest upset of the 134th Durand Cup, knocking out Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC 2-0 in the quarterfinals, here on Sunday. Defender Sairuatkima was the unlikely hero at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, striking twice in the first half (3rd and 41st minutes) to silence the home crowd and fire the Bengal outfit into the semifinals on their maiden appearance in the tournament. Jamshedpur FC, under interim coach Steven Dias, dominated possession after the break but were left frustrated by a compact and resolute Diamond Harbour backline marshalled by goalkeeper Mirshad Koottappunna. The tone was set as early as the third minute when a long throw unsettled the JFC defence and Ruatkima, left unmarked, stabbed home from close. If that rattled the ISL outfit, the second blow just before half-time left them reeling. Samuel Lalmuanpuia's cross deflected and Ruatkima met it with a sweetly-timed volley to double the lead. Diamond Harbour, coached by Spaniard Kibu Vicuna, could have added more through Luka Majcen and Jobby Justin, while Jamshedpur's efforts were limited to speculative strikes from Rei Tachikawa and Jayesh Rane that failed to hit the target. The home side came out firing in the second half, but Mirshad stood tall. He first dived low to deny Sanan's drilled effort and then springing up to block VP Suhair's volley in a stunning double stop. Despite waves of JFC pressure, the underdogs held their shape and threatened on the counter through Hali Charan Narzary and Majcen, ensuring the tie never tilted back in favour of the ISL side. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Carlos Alcaraz frozen after 4 double faults in a game; fans roar: ‘Face card so hard, service so bad'

Carlos Alcaraz reached his second final at the Cincinnati Open on Saturday after defeating Alexander Zverev in the semifinal. It also marked the seventh consecutive time he reached an ATP Tour final, increasing his season match win total to 53 in a year that already included five titles. Carlos Alcaraz produced 4 double faults in a game The 6-4, 6-3 scoreline, however, belies the struggles Alcaraz faced. The first came in the opening set when Zverev found the antidote to his cross-court game, leaving him trailing 2-3 before a late surge helped him regain the lead. The second came at the start of the second set, when Alcaraz committed four double faults in the second game—three of them consecutively—handing the German an early advantage. The sight left Alcaraz frozen in shock as he walked to his bench during the change of play. His expression quickly went viral on social media. Zverev, however, failed to capitalize on the advantage as he began feeling unwell and took a medical timeout off court after the third game of the second set. Zverev, who has retired in only two matches since 2014, returned to finish what was a patchy match from Alcaraz, who had double-faulted four times in the second game of the second set but won the last 12 points with Zverev running on fumes. 'We started well with good rallies, a good level,' Alcaraz said. 'All of a sudden he felt bad, and I was thinking more about how he was feeling instead of playing good tennis. It was tough, and I just wish him all the best.' Alcaraz will next face rival Jannik Sinner, and the Spaniard admitted he is keen to take his Wimbledon revenge in Monday's unorthodox final. 'We always bring our best tennis. We raise each other's level. I'm ready to take the challenge,' Alcaraz said. 'I will try to adjust my game better and correct what I did wrong in our last match. I want to be ready with my 100%. Mentally, I'll be ready — I'm excited for Monday.'

Manchester City's squad size has to reduce: Pep Guardiola downplays win at Wolves

The travelling Manchester City supporters at Molineux were in full voice, chanting "City are back" as Pep Guardiola's men began their Premier League campaign with a commanding 4-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. But Guardiola was quick to temper expectations, stressing that one emphatic win does not guarantee a revival after last season's disappointing third-place finish."The start is a good result, but no more than last season," Guardiola told Sky Sports. "Last season we started against Chelsea with a 2-0 win, and look what happened later. We started with hunger and energy then as well. This is just the first game-there are still many, many points to play for."advertisementWhile the performance at Wolves hinted at a refreshed City side, Guardiola admitted there is a pressing issue within his squad: its sheer size. With 30 senior professionals on the books, the Catalan believes the imbalance is unsustainable and harmful to morale. "We have too many people," he said. "It's not about Eddy [Ederson]. Today we didn't have Rodri, Phil [Foden], Mateo [Kovacic], Savinho or Josko [Gvardiol]. On the bench we had Nathan [Ake] and Gundo [Ilkay Gundogan]. I like a deep squad to compete in all competitions, but I don't want to leave players at home. It's not healthy-you cannot create a good vibe or atmosphere to compete. The club has known it since last season, but the situation is what it is."Guardiola confirmed that several departures are expected before the transfer window closes in September, with at least half a dozen players likely to move Spaniard is also adapting to life without Kevin De Bruyne, absent after a summer exit, while Rodri is sidelined with injury. Jack Grealish completed a loan switch to Everton last week, and goalkeeper Ederson—linked with a move to Turkey—missed the Wolves clash through were positives to savour, however. Summer signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki both scored on debut, while young goalkeeper James Trafford impressed with a composed display. Erling Haaland, as ever, provided the cutting edge with a brace."Tijjani is an exceptional player, one of the best from Serie A," Guardiola said. "He has an unbelievable rhythm. The new players have given us a bigger squad, but now we must find a balance. We'll have to use the whole group, but it's important to reduce numbers to keep the right vibe."- EndsMust Watch
