China's online literature expands overseas readership in cultural export push
HONG KONG - China counted over a half billion consumers of online literature in 2024 - a record - according to an official report, while the number of overseas users also jumped as authorities promoted the industry as a cultural export and soft power tool.
China's online literature, which includes web novels in a variety of genres accessible via smart phones, tablets and e-readers, has seen a boom over the past decade with the number of authors and readers soaring.
A report by the Chinese Literature Institute, under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said on June 15 that the growth was driven by younger consumers.
Readers aged 26 to 45 accounted for half the total readership, the report said.
The number of online literature consumers in China grew 10.6 per cent year-on-year in 2024 to 575 million, or nearly half of all citizens.
The number of overseas users, meanwhile, reached 352 million, including readers from more than 200 countries, with the market growing 16.5 per cent year-on-year to a value of 5.07 billion yuan (S$905.43 million).
The report called online literature a new channel for "telling Chinese stories well and deepening exchanges and mutual learning among civilisations", adding that it had improved the "country's cultural soft power."
Science fiction in particular was developing rapidly, it added.
With a growth rate of 180 per cent, Japan was the fastest developing foreign market.
Britain, Greece, Spain, Brazil, France and Germany also showed strong growth, it said.
Chinese online literature has the largest readership in Asia, which accounts for about 80 per cent of all readers globally and over 50 per cent of global market share by value, the report said.
China Literature Ltd, a leading Chinese online literary reading and writing platform owned by Tencent, has turned many of its online literature works into television and web series, movies and games.
Its Hong Kong-listed shares have climbed 23 per cent so far in 2025. REUTERS

When I try to conjure up an image of what modern workwear looks like today, an image of Jeremy Allen White (or well, Carmy from The Bear ) trailing through the streets of New York plays in my mind. In some ways, White and his on-screen character share certain overlaps—at least in the sartorial realm. Both have a rotating uniform going for them, a modular wardrobe of well-worn, rugged separates that could include casual tees, an enduring pair of trousers and kicks, and some real vintage jackets thrown into the mix. Yet it's his uniform of the day that draws me in. Whilst his winter uniform consists of a chore jacket or two thrown into the mix, on most days this summer, he's been hashing it out in comfort: a tee with holes, some baggy trousers and a washed out cap. Looking like he's meant to be going places and getting things done. Closer to home, Chinese workwear has also been having its moment. In recent months, a miner had gone viral on Douyin, for his fire fits from the actual underground. With his protective headgear and worker bag in tow, he flits between earthy tones and durable denim that just make sense. It finds its roots in the practical and the real; what was once recognised as standard issue for workers during the era of industrialisation—be it the chore coat of 19th century France or the uniforms that were once worn throughout the traditional Chinese workforce. A hardy jacket worn with trousers or some dungarees, rendered in an indigo blue dye that was not only readily available, but effective at masking stains. The 'aesthetic' may now be synonymous with brands such as Carhartt and Dickies, but these brands also first started out by creating hard-worn garments that were durable for all sorts of labour-centric occupations, from woodworkers and carpenters to chefs and industrial workers. Clothes that were built for function—and would stand the test of time. And when it finally made its way into street subcultures, no one would question it—its appeal had always been about its utility and comfort. Taiwanese actors Ann Hsu and Roy Chiu welcome their first child, a boy

Taiwanese actress Ann Hsu and actor Roy Chiu have welcomed their first child after almost four years of marriage. Hsu, who turned 41 on Aug 7, announced the news on Instagram on Aug 14. Posting a photo of a tiny foot nestled in the hands of two adults, she wrote in Chinese: 'We are doing fine.' She did not give details on the baby's gender and date of birth, but Taiwanese media reported the child is a boy and was likely born in July. China Times said in an exclusive report on Aug 14 that some of the celebrity couple's friends in the entertainment industry have received full-month gift boxes and were surprised to learn that Hsu had given birth. The words 'Ian Baby 2025. Summer' were printed in the cards included in the full-month gift boxes sent by Hsu and Chiu, 43. Also included was this message: 'Roy & Ann's baby Ian was born healthy and safe into this world. He already has his own ideas at such a young age. He loves to laugh, is a foodie, enjoys eating and bathing with his dad as well as listening to his mum's stories before going to sleep.' Hsu and Chiu announced their marriage in December 2021 after playing lovers in Taiwanese romantic movie Man In Love (2021). Their nuptials came as a surprise then as the pair had shied away from confirming their relationship until then, and they have hardly shared photos of themselves together on social media after getting hitched. News of Hsu's pregnancy was first reported by Mirror Daily in May . The Taiwanese news outlet quoted a source close to the low-profile couple that Hsu was four months pregnant then. Hsu had cut down on her public appearances earlier in 2025 and turned down job offers after starring in the critically acclaimed Taiwanese series Imperfect Us (2024), which won her Best Leading Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film at Taiwan's Golden Bell Awards. She was spotted with a visible baby bump by Taiwan's Mirror Media in June while shopping in Taipei's Xinyi Shopping District. The Taiwanese media said then that she looked to be in at least her seventh month of pregnancy. The baby's arrival is also a double blessing for Chiu, who is starring in Taiwanese actress Shu Qi's directorial feature film debut, Girl. The Taiwanese coming-of-age drama will hold its world premiere in the main competition of the Venice Film Festival in September, where it has been shortlisted for the prestigious Golden Lion award.
