Misspelled names may give brands a Lyft – if the spelling is not too weird
Those are the main findings of a new peer-reviewed paper I published with fellow marketing scholar Leah Warfield Smith. This builds on previous work which found that using misspelled brand names usually backfires.
Misspelled brand names like Kool-Aid, Reddi-wip and Crumbl seem to be everywhere. They are especially common in the names of smartphone apps and in certain industries, like fashion. Companies often do this to stand out or perhaps so they can use the misspelled word as their domain name.
Despite their popularity, we know little about how consumers respond to different types of misspelled names, especially when those names deviate significantly from correct or standard spelling. Our study aims to fill this gap.
In a series of six experiments, we tested consumer reactions to fictional and several real brand names with varying levels and types of misspellings.
Mild misspellings, such as combining two real words such as SoftSoap were perceived just as positively as correctly spelled names. When consumers saw different levels of misspellings – consider the brand names Eazy Clean, Eazy Klean and Eezy Kleen – they reacted more negatively the further the name deviated from the correct spelling 'easy clean.'

However, we also found that relevance matters. A misspelled name that aligns with the product or brand identity can still be successful. For example, consumers responded just as well to Bloo Fog – a playful nod to oolong tea – as to the correctly spelled 'blue fog.' In contrast, Blewe Fog – a misspelling without a linguistic connection to the product's name – performed worse.
Other experiments showed similar, more positive effects when the name related to the owner's identity, for example Sintymental Moments by Joe Sinty, or a visual cue as in Toadal Fitness with a toad logo. In each case, the misspelling was more acceptable when it made conceptual sense to consumers.
Why it matters
The findings suggest that two main concepts play a role in how consumers process brand names: linguistic fluency – or how easily a name is pronounced and read – and conceptual fluency – how easily the meaning of a name is understood or how well it aligns with the product.
Linguistic fluency decreases with more severe misspellings, resulting in more negative responses. But if the misspelling adds some kind of meaning – related to the product, person or logo – these adverse effects can be easily mitigated.
For marketers and brand strategists, the takeaway is that misspellings can work, but only when they make sense. Naming a tea brand Bloo Fog might succeed where Blewe Fog fails, but only if consumers understand the name-product connection.
Understanding when a misspelling helps or hurts a brand is crucial to crafting the right brand name; ideally, one that can be perceived positively while reaping the benefits of misspellings, such as increased memorability, uniqueness or trademark acquisition.
What still isn't known
While this research uncovers how consumers react to different types of misspellings, it leaves open important questions about long-term effects. For example, do consumers still notice the misspelling in a 60-year-old brand name like Kwik Trip, a convenience store chain in the US Midwest?

US manufacturing expands at fastest pace since 2022 on demand
[WASHINGTON] US manufacturing is expanding at the fastest rate in more than three years on stronger demand that's also fueling sustained inflationary pressures. The S&P Global flash August factory purchasing managers index rose 3.5 points to 53.3, the highest since May 2022, according to data released on Thursday (Aug 21). Figures above 50 indicate growth. The pickup in the manufacturing gauge helped lift the composite PMI, which also includes a measure of services, to the highest level this year. 'Companies across both manufacturing and services are reporting stronger demand conditions, but are struggling to meet sales growth,'' Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said in a statement. Employment growth was the strongest since March 2022, according to the survey. The figures point to resilient demand and optimism about the US economy at the start of the second half of the year. 'While this upturn in demand has fuelled a surge in hiring, it has also bolstered firms' pricing power. Companies have consequently passed tariff-related cost increases through to customers in increasing numbers,'' Williamson said. A gauge of business activity in services eased slightly but remained healthy. The sales indicator grew at the fastest pace this year, while a gauge of outstanding business remained the strongest since May 2022. India and Russia seek to increase trade to US$100 billion as US ties fray
[NEW DELHI] India and Russia are looking to increase their annual trade by about 50 per cent over the next five years to reach US$100 billion, seeking to reduce tariffs as both countries see mounting tensions with the US, a top envoy said. Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said on Wednesday (Aug 20) during a visit to Moscow that the two countries must remove trade bottlenecks and reduce non-tariff barriers to reach the goal. Russia is India's fourth-largest trading partner, while India is Russia's second-largest. Jaishankar's visit is the latest in a series of diplomatic efforts to fellow founding members of the Brics group of developing countries, which have all faced prohibitive tariffs and trade threats from US President Donald Trump. India's foreign minister is on a three-day visit to Moscow for an annual bilateral dialogue, which is expected to pave the way for President Vladimir Putin's visit to the South Asian country later this year. Without directly mentioning the US and its trade policies, Jaishankar said at the India-Russia Business Forum in Moscow that rising global uncertainty puts the emphasis back on 'dependable and steady partners.' Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Putin as a 'friend' after a call with the Russian leader this week, and New Delhi has moved to bolster relations with China. Asia's wealthy investors seek more crypto in portfolios
[HONG KONG / SINGAPORE] Wealthy Asian families and family offices are ramping up their cryptocurrency investments, driven by the bullishness around digital assets, increased mainstream adoption and favourable regulatory developments in key markets. Wealth managers said they are receiving more enquiries, cryptocurrency exchanges have seen trading volumes surge and crypto funds are in huge demand as high-net-worth Asian investors seek more exposure. 'We raised over US$100 million in just a few months, and the response from LPs has been encouraging,' said Jason Huang, founder of NextGen Digital Venture, referring to Limited Partners that represent high net-worth individuals. Huang launched a new long-short crypto equity fund, the Next Generation Fund II, in Singapore in late May, after winding down his first fund last year, which returned 375 per cent in less than two years. 'Our investors – mainly family offices and Internet/fintech entrepreneurs, recognise the growing role of digital assets in diversified portfolios,' he said. Swiss investment bank UBS said some overseas Chinese family offices plan to raise their crypto exposure to around 5 per cent of their portfolios. The surging interest comes on the back of strong cryptocurrency returns and favourable regulatory developments in the US under President Donald Trump, such as the recently approved GENIUS Act. Bitcoin prices have been hitting record highs this month, surpassing US$124,000. Hong Kong's recent passage of its stablecoin legislation has also fuelled a wave of crypto enthusiasm. 'The momentum has definitely built, and I think it's a function of just general maturity of the asset class,' said Saad Ahmed, head of Asia-Pacific at crypto exchange Gemini. Wealth managers said the mindset among Asian clients has changed from merely wanting to have a small allocation to digital currencies a few years ago to now embracing it as a must-have in portfolios and exploring tools to optimise returns. 'Last year, they (family offices) started to dip their feet into Bitcoin they have begun to learn the difference of holding a token directly,' said Zann Kwan, chief investment officer at Singapore-based Revo Digital Family Office. Lighthouse Canton, a Singapore-based wealth manager, said some more sophisticated family offices have started adopting market-neutral strategies, such as basis trades and arbitrage. Giselle Lai, associate investment director for digital assets at Fidelity International, said investors are increasingly treating Bitcoin as a 'portfolio diversifier' to hedge macro uncertainties, given its low correlation with stocks and bonds. Cryptocurrency exchanges have also benefitted from increased trading demand. The number of registered users at Hong Kong's HashKey Exchange surged 85 per cent year-on-year by August 2025, the firm said. Total trading volumes at South Korea's three major exchanges grew 17 per cent so far in 2025 over the same period of 2024, with average daily trading volumes rising more than 20 per cent, according to research platform CryptoQuant.
