Kate Garraway suffered a financial setback this week after being locked out of her bank accounts. The Good Morning Britain presenter and radio host revealed she couldn't access her current account and savings account.
The presenter has been open about her financial woes, having previously admitted she had fallen into debt after spending £16,000 a month on care for her husband Derek. He died in 2024 at the age of 56 after a lengthy battle with the long-term effects of Covid.

She admitted previously: "I'm doing something similar myself. I've just had to withdraw the bit you can tax-free for my pension to pay belated bills for my husband that passed away.

"I am ashamed of the fact that I am in debt because I have an incredible job that I love, that's very well paid. I'm not a carer travelling miles, paying their own transport to go and help somebody for minimum wage. I'm somebody that is very well paid and so I just feel a shame that I couldn't make it work."
She had also been open in her documentary about how they were at a "crunch point" financially. She said: "Derek's care costs more than my salary from ITV and that is before you pay for a mortgage, before you pay any household bills, before you pay for anything for the kids, so we are at a crunch point. I am in debt.
"I can't earn enough money to cover my debt because I am managing Derek's care and I can't even use the money I do have to support Derek's recovery because it's going on the basics all the time."
Now she has suffered another financial setback as she was locked out of her accounts. Taking to Twitter, she begged her bank for help, where she wrote: "@Barclays please please get in touch with me - I have not been able to access any of my Barclays accounts current or savings since Friday due to changing my phone handset and can't get through to anyone on customer service."#
It comes a month after Kate suffered another setback. New paperwork from HMRC showed loan debts of almost £140,000 remain from her late husband's company as well as a £288,000 tax bill. The company has no more assets and HMRC say attempts to recoup the money are ongoing, although it is thought that Kate does not have the money to pay back currently.
A spokesman for Kate said: ''Kate has met all that the liquidators of Derek's company have asked for and more over the past 4 years. She doesn't recognise these figures and is shocked that's it's being presented in this way by them.
"Caring for Derek and supporting her family when Derek could no longer run his own businesses has taken a huge financial toll on her but she's determined to put things right. She is in constant contact with HMRC to make sure she honours what's required from Derek's now defunct company."

The clawback mirrors the approach being pursued by the UK Government. ‌ The winter fuel payment policy has been in chaos after Chancellor Rachel Reeves initially withdrew between £200 and £300 from around ten million pensioners. ‌ She eventually u-turned and settled on a system where pensioners with an income of less £35,000 would receive their payment. With the policy devolved, SNP First Minister John Swinney said this week that no pensioner would be worse off than south of the border. His Social Security Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville has now provided more details of the Pension Age Winter Heating Payments (PAWHP). Depending on age, pensioners with an income of less than £35,000 will receive either £203.40 or £305.10 per household, more than they would in England. This move will see over 720,000 Scots pensioners benefit, but the SNP Government will hold talks with Whitehall about recovering PAWHP from older people with incomes above the £35,000 threshold. Somerville said: 'The UK Government 's decision to cut the Winter Fuel Payment last winter was a betrayal of millions of pensioners, and their recent U-turn is welcome if belated. ‌ 'Following careful consideration of the options available, the Scottish Government will mirror the approach taken by the UK Government. We will bring forward regulations to ensure that, from this winter onwards, all pensioners will receive either £203.40 or £305.10 per household, depending on age. 'We are in discussion with the UK Government to extend the proposed arrangements in England and Wales to recover payments from those pensioners with an individual income of more than £35,000 through the tax system. The intention is that the payment will be recovered automatically, and pensioners will not need to register with HMRC for this or take any further action. 'This approach ensures a higher level of support which those most in need will receive. Over 720,000 Scottish pensioners are estimated to benefit from the higher payment.'

At the same time, Derek's psychotherapy firm Astra Aspera Ltd - which was jointly controlled by Kate - went bust owing hundreds of thousands to creditors, including a huge sum to HMRC. A new liquidator's report reveals how Kate has been trying to repay debts as well as a more palatable revised total. HMRC has submitted a preferential claim of £288,054, a third of its previous submission of £716,822. It's not known why the HMRC have dramatically dropped their demand. There are also creditor claims of and £196,548 from four other firms including a £50,000 bank loan. People might trigger a tax investigation if their 'lavish lifestyle' doesn't add up to what should be in their bank account People might not be aware that their social media accounts could be monitored and flagged if authorities notice they're living a lifestyle that their finances cannot support. The tactic is being used to ensure people are paying the right amount of tax. Rachel Harris, an accountant and tax expert, warned that people should be careful with their social media brags, as HM Revenue and Customs [HMRC] could easily be "watching your Instagram Stories." She said: "HMRC do a lot of work behind the scenes to understand who to investigate and when. One of the things that HMRC agents are trained to do is compare your income to your Instagram. ‌ "They're looking for something called lifestyle inconsistency. If you're posting online about luxury holidays and a lavish lifestyle, but your declared income doesn't match up, HMRC then have reason to investigate you. ‌ "They're trained to spot red flags like frequent travel, designer purchases and photos of property and assets that don't appear on your tax returns. HMRC combine what you post with the data that they already collect from your bank, your employer and your tax return." She added that people "could face an investigation" if the cash to fund this lifestyle doesn't add up to what you declare. The tactic isn't just limited to Instagram - it's all social media. The Mirror previously reported on a warning issued by tax barrister Andy Wood that HMRC's improved scrutiny of online behaviour may lead to potential investigations into your finances. He said: "HMRC has really ramped up its use of technology and data analytics to make sure people are paying the right amount of tax. Public social media posts are now being scrutinised, as they can provide evidence of suspected financial discrepancies. "HMRC is legally entitled to view and analyse any publicly available information on social media. This includes posts, photos, and videos that may suggest a lifestyle inconsistent with reported income or assets, evidence which can line up other findings and trigger investigations." ‌ What do I have to declare to HMRC? People might have to share certain information about their additional income with HMRC. This would be separate from what any employer already provides to the authority or not already included in your Self Assessment if you work for yourself. This may include money you earn from things like: ‌ selling things - for example at car boot sales or auctions, or online doing casual jobs such as gardening, food delivery or babysitting charging other people for using your equipment or tools renting out property or part of your home - including for holidays creating content online - for example on social media If you receive £1,000 or less from trading or casual activities between April 6 2025 and April 5 2026, you can use your trading allowance. This means you do not have to report your sales to HMRC. Use this free online tool to check if you should make a declaration. You can get help if you do not understand something about your tax by contacting HM Revenue and Customs.
