17 dead in head-on collision between minibus taxi and truck in Zimbabwe, police say

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a haulage truck killed 17 people in northeastern Zimbabwe on Tuesday police said.
Police spokesman Paul Nyathi said all 17 victims, including some pedestrians, died at the scene of the crash, which happened near Chitungwiza, a densely populated town about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) southeast of the capital, Harare.
Nyathi said the truck veered into the opposite lane and collided with the minibus after the driver lost control. Before the impact, the truck struck two pedestrians walking on the 'island of the road,' he said.
Fifteen of the 17 passengers in the minibus died instantly, while others were injured and rushed to a hospital.
The state-run Herald newspaper reported that the minibus was 'completely flattened, with only fragments of its chassis visible from beneath the truck's undercarriage.'
Twisted metal, shattered glass and debris were strewn across the road as rescuers worked to retrieve trapped passengers, the newspaper said. The accident happened in the morning, but rescuers were still recovering bodies at noon, it reported.
Chitungwiza Mayor Rosaria Mangoma urged the government to declare the crash a national disaster, calling it 'one of the most disturbing and traumatic scenes' the town had witnessed.
Deadly road accidents involving public transportation are common in Zimbabwe, where speeding is widespread as drivers attempt to maximize daily trips. Poorly maintained roads add to the danger.
In February, 24 people were killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck near Beitbridge, on the border with South Africa.
Zimbabwe, with a population of about 15 million, records a road accident every 15 minutes, killing at least five people daily — one of the highest fatality rates in Africa, according to the national statistics agency.

Tributes to 'devoted father' who died after crash

The family of a motorcyclist who died after a crash involving two cars have said he was a "devoted father" who had "cheeky charm and enthusiasm for life". Steven Morris, 38, was taken to hospital with serious injuries after the crash in Alfreton Road, Underwood, Nottinghamshire, on Sunday and died a short time later, despite the efforts of emergency workers. Mr Morris's family described him as "a family man" who "touched so many lives". Nottinghamshire Police said officers were called just before 20:00 BST and issued an appeal for anyone who saw any of the vehicles involved - a Harley Davidson motorcycle, a Volvo V90 and a Bentley Brooklands - before the crash. In a statement, Mr Morris's family said: "We are so desperately heartbroken and devastated at the loss of our beloved Steven, known to those closest as Mo, who has been taken much too soon at the tender age of 38. "We were incredibly fortunate to have called him our Steven and he will be loved always. "We would like to thank all the emergency services and members of public present at the scene who helped Steven, it means a lot to know you were there." Det Con Andrew Fawcett, of the force's serious collision investigation unit, confirmed Mr Morris's family were being supported by specially trained officers as an investigation into the crash continued. "We know this has been a huge shock and very difficult time for Mr Morris's family as they try to come to terms with their loss," he added. Follow BBC Nottingham on Facebook, on X, or on Instagram. Multi-car crash in Grapevine prompts hours-long road closures, police say alcohol may have been a factor

Alcohol may have been a factor in a multi-car crash early Friday morning in Grapevine, according to police. The crash happened around 1:40 a.m. in the intersection of Grapevine Mills Parkway and Grapevine Mills Boulevard North, Grapevine police said. Police said a driver in a sedan collided with two other vehicles in the intersection. That driver and three passengers were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. One of them is in a possibly life-threatening condition, police said. The driver of the second vehicle, another sedan, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the third vehicle, also a sedan, wasn't injured. As a result of the crash, the traffic control box for the intersection and a power pole sustained damage. Grapevine police said the roads will remain closed as officers continue investigating and crews work to make repairs. Temporary stop signs will be used until the traffic signals are repaired. While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, police said they believe alcohol was involved.
