Jack Black says hold the popcorn: ‘Minecraft' fans get a message about messy ‘chicken jockey' trend
Jack Black delivers the viral 'chicken jockey' line in 'A Minecraft Movie,' but he doesn't sign off on the chaotic fan behavior surrounding it in theaters and on social media.
The comedian and 'School of Rock' star surprised moviegoers at a showing of 'Minecraft' over the weekend and encouraged them to be on their best behavior, according to video shared Sunday by the Hollywood Handle. Disguising his voice as that of a theater spokesperson, Black can be heard telling fans 'for today's presentation of 'A Minecraft Movie,' please no throwing popped corn.'
'And also no lapis lazuli. And absolutely no...,' he continues his message before, screaming, 'chicken jockeys!'
In the video, Black introduces himself to the group of young, excited moviegoers. 'I am Steve,' he tells them, referencing his character in Warner Bros.' film adaptation of the popular video game franchise. Black also shows off his prop pickax and runs across the theater hyping up fans before the showing starts.
So what was the deal with his popcorn disclaimer?
The 'Kung Fu Panda' star encouraged audience members to restrain themselves after several videos showed 'Minecraft' viewers at various showings throwing objects, screaming and loudly cheering during a viral scene. In the film, which premiered earlier this month, Black and Jason Momoa's characters find themselves in the middle of a boxing ring. Their foe, in true 'Minecraft' fashion, is a blocky baby zombie riding a cubist chicken: a 'chicken jockey,' as Black's Steve properly notes.
Since its creation more than a decade ago, the 'Minecraft' franchise has spawned countless memes among fans and the rare combination of a chicken and a zombie in the game is among those inside jokes. The movie's nod to that bit of fan lore only took the meme to the next level.
In several viral social media videos, moviegoers break out into chaos during the 'chicken jockey' scene: They flash their phone lights, launch their popcorn and drinks toward the screen and scream throughout the fight sequence. In one video, a masked audience member can be seen holding a live chicken as they sit atop another moviegoer's shoulders.
As a result of the raucous crowds, theater workers — often left to deal with the messy aftermath — are also tasked with encouraging moviegoers to avoid throwing objects at the screen. Police officials have been recruited to escort some audience members out for their behavior. Beyond the chaos of 'chicken jockey,' some 'Minecraft' viewers have also personalized their showings with preshow speeches.
'It's been way too fun,' director Jared Hess told Entertainment Weekly. Hess, who directed Black in 'Nacho Libre' and broke out with 'Napoleon Dynamite,' said he didn't see the harm in the trend and finds it funny 'that cops are getting called for popcorn.'
'I'm just glad people are making memories with their friends and families,' he said.
On its opening weekend, 'A Minecraft Movie' earned a record-breaking $157-million domestic and $144-million overseas. A clear winner amid Hollywood's continued push for video game adaptations, the action-comedy bested 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' for the highest-performing video game film adaptation.
In her review, Times critic Amy Nicholson wrote that 'A Minecraft Movie' was 'essentially a meathead version of 'The Wizard of Oz.' ' The film stars Black, Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers and Danielle Brooks.

Discovery, James Gunn's Superman has the honor of launching the DC Universe. Now a new report claims just how much Superman must make to turn a profit and boost the DCU going forward. The new live-action endeavor, which features actor David Corenswet as the titular superhero, also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl. As mentioned, the film will fully introduce the DC Universe as a live-action film franchise, one that will use these cast members and various others to carry their films and shows forward. Of course, the DCU's future also depends on the financial success of the film, which is said to have a $225 million budget according to The Wrap. The outlet additionally spoke to a talent agent who offered their insights regarding what the film must make in order to turn a profit. With the $225 million budget in mind, this agent suggests that James Gunn's Superman will have to make as much as $700 million worldwide in order to be called a success by the studio. 'While release dates are important, I don't think the challenge is ' Jurassic World: Rebirth ' or any other film,' they shared. 'The challenge is almost entirely a question of if Superman resonates with today's audience. Did they successfully update an Eisenhower-era character so the 2025 Gen Z audience can identify with him?' 'The simple brand recognition of Superman will probably take them to or close to $500 million worldwide, but anything above that will be because the audience identifies with the title character,' the insider added. Additionally, another source claims $500 million could be enough to turn a profit, but Warner Bros. Discovery is hoping to make much, much more in an effort to rejuvenate the studio. While there are several DC Universe projects in the pipeline regardless of how Superman performs at the box office, the franchise's future could still be much shorter-lived if Superman fails. As such, we'll have to see how Superman plays out when it hits theaters on July 11, 2025 and whether or not it makes a profit. Juneteenth celebration set for June 14
TUPELO — Every year, residents and officials alike gather at Gum Tree Park to celebrate the day the last slaves were notified of their emancipation following the American Civil War. Tupelo will host its annual Juneteenth Tupelo Freedom Celebration June 14 at 4 p.m. at Gum Tree Park, with a separate celebration set from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on June 19, the official day of the federal holiday. Both are free to attend. 'We are very excited. Each year gets better. Each year… more people become aware of not just the festival but also the history,' organizer Jennifer Lawrence said. 'We come from a people that persevered. They went through a lot of oppression but we are here. We are still growing and evolving and we are making strides.' Juneteenth, a portmanteau of June and 19th, marks the annual celebration of the day Union soldiers traveled to Texas to announced that all enslaved Black people in the state were now free, officially ending slavery in the United States. In 2021, former President Joe Biden signed a law naming the day a federal holiday. The Saturday, June 14, festivities will include music performances, multiple speakers, a barbecue cook-off, a kids zone, a dance contest and giveaways. As part of the event, four graduating Black high school seniors or college students each will receive a $300 Conway Goree Scholarship. There will be a mini motorbike raffle as well. Before the June 19 celebration at the park, Lawrence said there will be a march from Gum Tree Museum on main street up to the monument by the old courthouse. Musical performances include Rapper J, Unique JS, Geno Jones' FOCUS, KP & Favor, Genesis United of Starkville, Mighty Gospel Warriors, Lawrence McKenzie, Changed of Amory, Tay Cheesy Brand the Line Dance Queen, J. Green & The Smack Band, The Crossroads Band, EJ Soul, Music Doll TB and more. Before the event proper begins, there will be a parade that starts 3 p.m., starting at the C.C. Augustus Center on North Green Street. Organizers request those attending bring lawn chairs. On June 20, the second annual 'Freedom Face Up' basketball tournament will take place at the Tupelo Police Athletic League, 204 Douglas Street. When Christian needs help with a job, he calls on his estranged brother, and they reconnect as they go on a gun-toting road trip together. It's literally Rain Man as an action thriller. It's funnier than the original, and Affleck and Bernthal are very entertaining together. After a modest theatrical run, it's now streaming on Prime Video, which makes sense; it's very much in the same vein as the Road House remake, one of the streaming service's biggest original hits. If you're math-phobic, here are some other movies to stream or watch on-demand this weekend: : Director Dan Trachtenberg's quest to revitalize the Predator franchise continues with this animated feature that's now streaming on Hulu. The bloody action flick is something of an anthology movie, as warriors from various time periods — a Viking, a ninja in feudal Japan, and a World War II pilot — go up against a Predator alien who sees them as a challenge. It's Trachtenberg's second released Predator movie, after 2022's cult favorite Prey, and will be followed by live-action thriller Predator: Badlands later this year. : Robert De Niro and Robert De Niro star in this Mafia drama. De Niro plays dual roles as 1950s mobsters Vito Genovese and Frank Costello as they fight for control of the Luciano family. It tells famous tales of Mafia history in a way you've seen many times before, but De Niro, screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi (Goodfellas), and director Barry Sonnenfeld (Bugsy) know what they're doing. There are three actors from The Sopranos in the supporting cast — Kathrine Narducci, Michael Rispoli, and Matt Servitto — if that's something you take into account in deciding whether to watch a mob movie. The Alto Knights flopped in theaters but is looking to find a second life on Max. : Writer-director-producer Tyler Perry is back with a new Netflix drama. Taraji P. Henson stars as Janiyah, a woman at the end of her rope. She's a single mother having an exceptionally bad day. She gets evicted from her apartment, robbed, and disrespected everywhere she goes. She just needs to deposit her check at the bank so she can pay for her daughter's medicine, and when even that goes wrong, she ends up a suspect in a crime she didn't mean to commit, and it turns into a hostage situation. It's a film that empathizes with everyone who is just a few bad breaks away from calamity. The supporting cast includes Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, and Sinbad. A sure sign that the weather's changing is the arrival of fresh singles aiming to be the season-defining hit. And previous title-holder Sabrina Carpenter is throwing her hat back into the ring with "Manchild," a country-influenced ode to the dim men in her life with a little disco thrown into the mix. The video accompanying the release feels like a deliciously overstuffed trailer for an off-the-wall '70s road movie. Ahead of the release of "First Steps" on July 25, Marvel Studios have debuted composer Michael Giacchino's full main theme for the Fantastic Four. Sonically, the track is a mix of bright mid-century retro-futurism and some more spacey synth.
