Billy Porter wants to build his own fashion and beauty empire
The 55-year-old singer/actor has ventured into the beauty business by founding his own cosmetics company called Black Mona Lisa, which shares the same name as his 2023 song and features products including cleanser and serums as well as eye shimmers and lip stick , and Billy hopes the launch is just the start of his business career.
He told WWD: "Black Mona Lisa to me is ever-present. It's classic forever and doesn't go out of style. This is just Black Mona Lisa beyond the music.
"But I also want Black Mona Lisa clothes, shoes and cookware."
Billy went on to insist he hopes the brand can "free people" because there are "no rules" when it comes to make-up.
He added: "What I've learned from being out with my younger friends is that there are no letters; there are no rules. It's freeing and it's fun; it's authentic.
"This is my authentic self, and I didn't even know it. That's what I want this brand to be. I want it to free people, and to be whatever they want to be."
It comes after Billy previously admitted he's actually "an introvert" but has learned to be more outgoing because of his career, which has involved starring in shows in both the West End and on Broadway.
When asked what makes him smile, he told Town and Country magazine: "True kindness. You wouldn't know it but ... I'm an introvert.
"I know how to be an extrovert because my job requires it. But if you want to know the real me, I'm a home boy, I want to be with my friends. It's something that has shifted over the years; I think I started out as an extrovert as a young person."
The stage star went on to insist living and working in London for his role in a West End revival of Cabaret has been "really healing" experience for him.
He said: "My whole life is the greatest thing that ever happened. As a black gay man on this earth in this time. What's so great about London?
"I love the people, the architecture. I love how art is still for everyone, even though I know you guys are holding onto that concept by a thread.
"I love the fashion here, it is open and fun and not muted by masculine tropes. I also love the sex positivity in London - it is very healing to me."

Selena Gomez wanted fragrance bottle to be inclusive
Selena Gomez's fragrance bottle was designed with the help of a rehab facility and hand therapists. The Only Murders in the Building actress' Rare Beauty brand will launch Rare Eau de Parfum next week and because of the dexterity issues she suffers with as a result of auto-immune condition Lupus, Selena wanted to make sure the packaging was inclusive so brought in experts, including the Casa Colina clinic, engineers and certified hand therapists, to offer input on the design. She told WWD: 'I have dexterity problems from my lupus, so sometimes it's hard for me to open a bottle of water or do anything. 'Sometimes I've had to use a spray and, like, put both my fingers on it. It's not as sad as it sounds. I'm alive, and that's all that matters.' The 33-year-old star quietly tested the fragrance personally and used everyday moments to obtain reactions to the scent. She explained: 'It was really funny, because sometimes I would accidentally — I would accidentally or purposefully, I should say — get close to people and see if they could smell anything. 'I would just flat out ask everyone I was around. I would tell them what it is, and say, 'What do you think?'' Selena - who is engaged to Benny Blanco - wanted to reflect her contentment in both her personal and professional lives with the fragrance. She said: 'Some of my best memories were when I was creating this, in our little test tube, when I got engaged, when I got to celebrate my birthday, 32nd birthday. 'It was just something that made me feel like a piece of me. And I wanted everyone to enjoy it. I was hoping that it would embody the place of life that I'm in.' Although Rare Beauty hasn't released a fragrance before, Selena released two scents through a partnership with Adrenalina Inc. when she was just 19 years old but she doesn't "even remember" what they were like. She reflected: 'I was so young. "The sweetest thing — a few months ago, [I saw] someone had saved the box that my [first] fragrance was in. It's so long ago, I couldn't help but laugh, because it had just been a trying time in my life where I really was trying hard to be cool. "I don't even remember what it smells like. I don't think it would be anything I'd wear now. This is definitely more me.'

Music star Billy Joel: Love is not concrete
Billy Joel was "devastated" by his split from Christie Brinkley. The 76-year-old musician was married to the model between 1985 and 1994, and he loved the first few years of their romance. He said in his HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes: "Here I am dating this beautiful supermodel and ... me? I'm from Hicksville. What am I doing with her? What's she doing with me? But that was a very productive time for me. I wrote a lot of songs for her. She was a muse. "It was like being a teenager all over again. Experiencing those same emotions that I had when I was first discovering romance and love." Bill remembers the first few years of their romance being "so much fun". However, Billy admits that his music career and the stresses of fame took a toll on their relationship. He said: "I was in a relationship with someone who I cared deeply about. But I was not able to be at home. I was not able to be with my family. It was a very sad time for me. "I realised love is not concrete. You feel like it is, but there are things eating away at it. And in the end, it all catches up. It's hard. I was so devastated." Meanwhile, Billy has admitted to being given an ultimatum by Katie Lee, his then-wife, before he entered rehab in 2005. The musician checked into the Betty Ford Center for the treatment of alcohol abuse, after Katie instructed him to either seek help or end their relationship. He said: "With the rehab, you don't go for somebody else. You have to go for yourself. You have to want to do it. I didn't want to do it." Katie - who was married to Billy between 2004 and 2009 - noted that the music star struggled with addiction after taking a break from the spotlight. She explained: "I felt like he needed to be creating, he needed to be making music, performing, to turn down that anxiety of not having an artistic outlet. And there were struggles with addiction. It was really hard to navigate that, because I had no experience with it."

Billy Joel felt 'hurt' by Sir Elton John's rehab comments
Billy Joel felt "really hurt" after Sir Elton John encouraged him to go to rehab. The 76-year-old star admits that some "bad blood" developed between himself and Elton, after the Your Song hitmaker publicly suggested that Billy needed to spend some time in rehab. In the HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes, he says: "Elton had made a comment that he thought I needed real rehab. He chalked it up to, 'Oh, he's a drunk.' And that really hurt me. "I said wait a minute? Don't you know me better than that? And there was bad blood for a little while. There was a dovetailing of things that happened during that time." Billy recalled feeling at "rock bottom" when he read Elton's comments. He said: "I was disillusioned with what I thought it was all supposed to mean. It was like all the signs were pointing to me: enough. And I wrote this letter to the band. 'I don't want to do this anymore. I'm gonna stop.'" Elton made the comments to Rolling Stone magazine back in 2011, shortly after they toured together. Elton explained at the time that they had "so many cancelled tours because of illnesses and various other things, alcoholism". The chart-topping star - who also struggled with addiction in the 70s and 80s - added: "He's going to hate me for this, but every time he goes to rehab they've been light ... I love you Billy, and this is tough love." Billy actually spent time in rehab in 2005, and he previously acknowledged that addiction has created "problems" in his life. The singer stopped drinking altogether in 2021, and he insisted that it doesn't bring any value to his life. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times newspaper in 2023, Billy shared: "I stopped a couple of years ago. It wasn't a big Alcoholics Anonymous kick. I just got a point where I'd had enough. "I didn't enjoy being completely inebriated, and it probably created more problems in my life than I needed. I don't need it now."
