Maxim Tsyplakov dodges arbitration with Islanders in rare post-rookie NHL $4.5M deal settlement

Maxim Tsyplakov's arbitration case with the New York Islanders was unlike most others in the National Hockey League (NHL); because he almost went to a hearing just one season into his NHL career.
But on Friday, the Islanders slammed the door shut on that possibility by inking the 26-year-old winger to a two-year, $4.5 million contract. The deal arrives four days ahead of his scheduled hearing and makes Tsyplakov the second player this week to settle early, after Seattle Kraken's Kaapo Kakko struck his own deal.

Why Tsyplakov's case was a one-off
Most players don't hit arbitration eligibility right after their rookie campaign. Tsyplakov, however, did; thanks to a little-known rule in the NHL's collective bargaining agreement.
Because he signed his first NHL contract at 25 years old in 2024, all it took was 10 games of professional experience last season to qualify.
From Russia to Long Island, his quick rise
Tsyplakov joined the Islanders in May 2024 after tearing up the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) with 31 goals and 47 points in 65 games for Spartak Moscow. In his first NHL season, he posted 10 goals and 35 points across 77 games; solid, if unspectacular, numbers for a rookie learning North American ice.

Islanders banking on bigger leap ahead
New York clearly believes Tsyplakov's numbers will grow. The cap hit of $2.25 million annually is affordable, but also a clear sign they expect more than just middle-six production moving forward.
FAQs
Why was Maxim Tsyplakov eligible for arbitration so early?
He signed his first NHL contract at 25, which allowed him to qualify after just 10 professional games under the league's CBA rules.
How did Tsyplakov perform in his rookie NHL season?
He scored 10 goals and 35 points in 77 games for the New York Islanders during the 2024–25 season.
What is the value of Tsyplakov's new contract?
The deal is worth $4.5 million over two years, with a $2.25 million average annual value.
Is it common for rookies to go to arbitration?
Not at all. Tsyplakov's case is considered rare due to his age and contract status when entering the league.
This was more than a simple contract; it was a message that the Islanders see Tsyplakov as part of their future core. And they weren't about to risk losing control in a courtroom battle.

IND vs ENG: 'India expected to miss Rohit Sharma, but KL Rahul is playing like a tapasvi'

KL Rahul (AFP Photo) NEW DELHI: KL Rahul has emerged as a vital contributor in the ongoing Test series against England, amassing 511 runs at an average of 63.88, including two centuries, making him the second-highest run-scorer in the series. His consistent performances at the top of the order have helped India navigate the transition following Rohit Sharma 's retirement from Test cricket, especially in testing English conditions. H is influence was particularly notable during the Manchester Test, where he compiled a gritty 90 off 230 balls, forming a crucial partnership with captain Shubman Gill that played a key role in helping India secure a hard-fought draw. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The exits of senior stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had sparked concerns about India's ability to perform in England. However, Rahul, along with Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja, has stepped up to dispel those doubts with composed and determined performances. "At some point, I hope people start giving him the respect he deserves. He's playing like a tapasvi, a true ascetic at the crease. He may have missed his century, but he's been the backbone of India's top order this series," former India cricketer Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel. Poll How important is KL Rahul's performance in the absence of Rohit Sharma? Extremely important Somewhat important Not very important Rahul has also entered an elite list by becoming only the second Asian opener after Sunil Gavaskar to score more than 500 runs in a single Test series in England. Gavaskar had achieved the feat with 542 runs in 1979. He is also just the second visiting opener in the 21st century to reach this mark, following South Africa's Graeme Smith, who scored 714 runs in the 2003 series. The partnership between Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal has been instrumental in easing the pressure from Rohit Sharma's absence at the top of the order. India vs England, The Oval Test: Arshdeep Singh is fit and available for selection "We expected to miss Rohit at some point, given how good he was last time here. But KL Rahul and Yashasvi have done incredibly well. They've been solid and confident, and that's been vital," Chopra added. Aakash Chopra has also commended Rahul's focused and steady approach at the crease, emphasizing how he has delivered for India when it mattered the most. 'Absolute filth, embarrassing moment': Stuart Broad on Harry Brook's over where he bowled 37mph

England' Harry Brook was handed bowling duties in the final over by skipper Ben Stokes in the 4th Test (Photo by) Former England pacer Stuart Broad has taken a sharp dig at the home team's tactics on the final day of the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford, calling Harry Brook 's spell "embarrassing" and as tensions flared in the dying moments of the match. With the Test heading towards a draw and Indian batters Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar approaching centuries, England skipper Ben Stokes offered a handshake to mutually end the game. But Jadeja turned it down, preferring to let the Indian duo reach their personal milestones. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Frustrated by the decision, Stokes handed the ball to part-time bowler Harry Brook, who surprisingly switched from his usual medium pace to off-spin in an apparent move to fast-track the conclusion of the match. Stuart Broad, speaking on the "For The Love Of Cricket" podcast, didn't hold back. 'Harry Brook came on to bowl and he bowled absolute filth. He bowled off spin. It was a bit of an embarrassing moment,' Broad said, clearly unimpressed with the switch. "Right-arm medium pace and you come up and bowl off spin? I didn't know he bowled off spin," Broad added. 'He looked like a poor man's Dan Lawrence in his action. He was trying to get the game done if they (India batters) were trying to get their hundreds.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cargo Ship Meets Pirates - Watch What the Captain Does Next! Tips and Tricks Undo Ben Stokes press conference: On handshake controversy, India fightback, his own fitness The closing stages saw further drama as Stokes brought all fielders within ten yards of the bat, seemingly urging India to finish their innings quickly. Broad however, stated that if he were playing, he'd be looking to get the game done as soon as possible and take his boots off. However, the former pacer did agree that neither side was in the wrong - India wanting to bat longer or England wanting to wrap things up quickly. The incident has sparked debate among cricket pundits. While Dale Steyn defended England's move to save their bowlers for the Oval decider, Sunil Gavaskar slammed Stokes and praised India's batters for standing firm. Nasser Hussain also criticised the decision to use Brook, questioning the message it sent. Poll What do you think about Harry Brook's decision to bowl off-spin during the match? Embarrassing move Just wanted to get the game over with No opinion With the five-match series standing at 2-1 in England's favour, the final Test at The Oval will be decisive. India need a win to level the series, while England will look to seal it with a 3-1 result. But as the series finale approaches, Broad's blunt remarks have further exposed the growing scrutiny over England's fourth-day mindset. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4.
