More than 70 people arrested at protests supporting banned Palestine Action

Daily Record4 days ago
The UK Government proscribed Palestine Action in June, after protestors from the group caused £7 million worth of damage at an RAF base.
More than 70 people have been arrested at demonstrations held against Palestine Action being proscribed as a terror group by the UK Government.
Protestors have gathered in cities across England and Wales after police reiterated that showing support for the group was a criminal offence.

42 people were arrested in London after crowds gathered for the second week in a row. A further 16 arrests were made in Manchester and 13 people were also held in Cardiff at other related demonstrations on Saturday.

In London, two groups of protesters gathered underneath both the Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela statues in Parliament Square for the demonstration shortly after 1pm.
The individuals then wrote the message 'I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action' with black markers on pieces of cardboard, and silently held the signs aloft as they were surrounded by Metropolitan Police officers and members of the media.
Some demonstrators could be seen lying on top of each other on the floor as police searched their bags and took their ID cards and handmade signs.
Officers could then be seen carrying away a number of protesters who were lying down, lifting them off the ground and into waiting police vans parked around the square.
Other standing protesters were also led away from the statues and placed into the vans. The last of the protesters was lifted from the Nelson Mandela statue shortly after 2.30pm.
All but one of the 42 arrests were for showing support for a proscribed organisation, while one person was arrested for common assault, the Metropolitan Police said in a post on social media.

Greater Manchester Police said it had arrested 16 people under the Terrorism Act after responding to a protest in St Peter's Square, Manchester, at around 2.30pm on Saturday.
South Wales Police also confirmed 13 people were arrested on suspicion of committing offences under the same Act during a protest in the vicinity of Central Square, Cardiff.

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police said a 58-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of demonstrating support for Palestine Action in Leeds. He was interviewed at a police station before being released on bail.
Scotland Yard said its stance remains that officers will act where criminal offences, including support of proscribed groups or organisations, are committed.
The force added that this includes ' chanting, wearing clothing or displaying articles such as flags, signs or logos'.

Police arrested 29 people at a similar protest in Parliament Square last weekend. They were detained for around 12 hours before being released on bail without charge, Defend Our Juries said.
The terror group designation means that membership of, or support for, Palestine Action is a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
The move to ban the organisation came after two Voyager aircraft were damaged at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on June 20, an incident claimed by Palestine Action, which police said caused about £7 million worth of damage.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced plans to proscribe Palestine Action three days later, saying that the vandalism of the planes was 'disgraceful' and the group had a 'long history of unacceptable criminal damage'.

Ian Murray accused of 'hypocrisy' after UK Government keeps 'damaging' post-Brexit law

EXCLUSIVE: Labour's Scottish Secretary said in 2020 that the Internal Market Act was "damaging" and undermined devolution. Ian Murray has been accused of "hypocrisy" after the UK Government said it was keeping a post-Brexit law which he had previously said should be removed. ‌ Labour's Scottish Secretary said in 2020 that the Internal Market Act was "bad and damaging" and undermined devolution. He also voted against it while in opposition. ‌ The law was introduced to create a single market across the UK after Brexit. But it has since allowed UK ministers to override the Scottish Parliament. ‌ This happened with the Deposit Return Scheme, where the Tory Government refused to exclude it from the act. SNP MP Stephen Gethins has written to Murray asking him to "repeal and replace" the law. The Arbroath and Broughty Ferry MP said: "The Internal Market Act has stripped powers from the Scottish Parliament and has undone the work of its principal architect, Donald Dewar. "I am old enough to remember when Ian Murray stood against Brexit and voted down the Act which he described as damaging and that undermined the devolution settlement. "It is complete hypocrisy that now he has his feet under the cabinet table he now backs this legislation and endorses Brexit - picking apart the powers of Scotland's parliament. "This is yet another promise broken by the Labour Party and it is another blow to the devolution settlement - any politician from Scotland worth their salt must fight tooth and nail to see the Internal Market Act repealed." ‌ Holyrood twice voted against the Internal Market Act. Labour MSPs backed the most recent motion to scrap it in 2023. The UK Government published its review of the act on Tuesday. UK trade minister Douglas Alexander promised "improvements" to the law but made clear ministers have not considered scrapping it. ‌ He said "the review has not considered repeal of the Act or any of its provisions" because the UK Government has 'been explicit about the need for businesses to have certainty'. The UK Government is promising changes to the law, including the introduction of exclusions to the legislation. As well as considering economic impacts, issues of environmental protection and public health will also be looked at for exclusions – with the UK Government saying this ensures a 'balance of factors is considered'.

Labour MP Stella Creasy thanks tube passengers for intervening as she was 'hassled' on Victoria line

Labour MP Stella Creasy has revealed she was "hassled" by a man on the London underground and has thanked passengers who rushed to her aid. Ms Creasy, who has been an MP since 2010, also said in a post on her X and Facebook accounts that whoever helped her on Tuesday should reach out to her office if they were prepared to be a witness, following the incident. She said: "If you were one of the passengers on the Victoria Line just now who intervened to stop a man hassling me thank you from the bottom of my heart. "Please get in touch with my office if you are prepared to be a witness as maybe the police might listen to you about him now!" It's not the first time Ms Creasy has been targeted. Ms Creasy received numerous rape threats and misogynistic messages on her Twitter timeline in 2013 after supporting feminist campaigner Caroline Criado Perez, who lobbied the Bank of England to put a woman on the £10 note. In 2023, Ms Creasy also revealed she had been after a man using an alias complained that her "extreme views" would damage her children and they should be removed from her. The complaint was dismissed and the man, who had no personal connection to Ms Creasy or her two children, apologised. But the Labour MP was left with a social services record after the "malicious" report by the man, who was later convicted of harassing her. In June last year, a separate incident saw Ms Creasy's office being attacked and "malicious" leaflets circulated. The Metropolitan Police confirmed at the time that an investigation had been launched into criminal damage at Ms Creasy's office.

Sean Stephen, 38, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene | Google Maps Ms Stephen told the Daily Record she was on the phone with her husband on July 1 when he entered the council's customer hub near the City Chambers after 'feeling unwell'. She later reported her husband missing after not hearing from him. Speaking to the Daily Record, Ms Stephen said: 'There's CCTV footage of him on the phone to me walking up the Royal Mile and into the council building. He was healthy but said he was feeling dizzy and sick. He said he was going to get a taxi. 'That was the last time I spoke to him. How's no one been in that toilet for six days, it baffles me. There are security guards, cleaners and someone who sits at reception. The CID are still digging. Could he have been saved? These are questions which will be in my head for rest of my life.'
