MasterChef Australia fans shocked by horrifying footage of 'mean' and 'harsh' Canadian judges screaming at contestants

Daily Mail06-06-2025
MasterChef Australia fans have been left puzzled by resurfaced footage of judges from the Canadian franchise shouting at their wide-eyed contestants after spitting out their food.
The YouTube channel MasterChef global recently re-uploaded footage of Canadian judges Michael Bonacini, Claudio Aprile, and Alvin Leung giving their season one contestants a brutal roasting.
The judging trio, who have helmed the Canadian series since 2014, are known for their demanding and sometimes intense critiques, particularly by blue-haired chef Alvin.
At the start of the clip, Alvin grimaces in disgust after he takes a bite out of contestant Megan Toth's smelt quiche.
He proceeds to chew the bite loudly and then throw his fork down in disgust, before storming out.

'That is why I only watch [MasterChef] Australia,' one viewer commented as the footage was shared to Reddit for discussion.
'Nice judges and nice contestants. No shouting and no chest thumping.'
In stark contrast to the unfavourable comparisons of Married at First Sight Australia to the 'tamer' UK and US formats — Channel Ten's MasterChef has been hailed by viewers as a beacon of positivity.
As the clip continues, judge Claudio joins his colleague in spitting out a bite of the second dish into a napkin.
'This looks like I want to watch the show from my couch fish cakes,' he tells a male contestant.
'That's a garnish? It looks like compost!'
Alvin, who is a renowned Canadian chef known for his "X-Treme Chinese" cuisine and often referred to as "The Demon Chef", was even harsher.
'Why would you puree a beautiful fish like that and turn it into mush?' he asked the same contestant, before completely losing his temper.

'Is this a joke? This is MasterChef Canada,' he said, before shouting, 'and you give me this?!'
Alvin is the owner of Bo Innovation in Hong Kong, a three-Michelin-starred restaurant.
Viewers flocked to Reddit to compare the Australian and UK MasterChef judges to their North American counterparts.
'MasterChef Aus still has drama. MasterChef UK has the least. And USA is...' one wrote.
'Yeah, most of the other versions overdramatise the judging, and encourage the judges to be total d***s,' another agreed before providing an example.
'MasterChef US: "Holy s***, this is horrible, and your dead mother would be ashamed at the way you've butchered her recipe." [Tosses plate across the room].
'MasterChef AU: "Well, you're asparagus is pretty on point, and I liked the use of saffron, but you've got to be more careful about your seasoning and you're cooking times. This definitely wasn't your best." [Gives crying contestant a hug].'
'It's why I only watch the Australian version anymore,' they concluded.

While MasterChef Australia fans have sometimes complained that judges Andy Allen, Poh Ling Yeow, Jean-Christophe Novelli, and Sofia Levin 'baby' the contestants or 'are too nice' - viewers agreed this is preferable compared to the shouting in Canada's version.
'The judges on MasterChef AU are genuinely some of the kindest. Even when a dish doesn't turn out well, they still manage to give feedback in such a polite and empathetic way,' another viewer added.
'And It's not just the current set of judges, even in the earlier seasons they always maintained that warmth and encouragement. In contrast, MasterChef Canada feels so much harsher.
'From this clip, the judges come across so blunt and rude. I get that presentation might be lacking in some dishes, but the way the criticism is delivered its just feels unnecessarily harsh.
'Honestly, it makes the whole viewing experience feel tense rather than enjoyable. I don't think I will ever enjoy watching this Masterchef Canada.
'It just takes the joy out of it.'
'I'm in Canada and I love watching the Australian feed because it's so wholesome,' another agreed.
'The Canadian version is so mean. The judges are mean and they push the contestants to fight against each other. There's a lot of bullying.'
'The US version is just as hideous if not worse ... honestly unwatchable. Again, the Australians have made this programme the best version possible,' praised another MC Australia fan.
Canadian viewers said that while chef Alvin has improved his temperament and judging style over time, they despised how their format appeared to copy the 'hideous' approach of the US version.

The Hunting Wives fans think they've spotted a glaring error in the Netflix series

Fans of the hit Netflix series The Hunting Wives think they caught a mistake in the premiere episode. One TikTok user highlighted a scene in which actress Brittany Snow 's character, Sophie O'Neil, opens her kitchen freezer, revealing a Kraft Mac & Cheese product inside. 'Of all the things that shocked me about The Hunting Wives, this is the part that really had me shook,' the viewer wrote across the snippet. She added in the caption, 'Why do I always notice weird things in shows?' The clip zoomed in on the inside of the freezer, confusing fans who are primarily familiar with the food brand's pasta offerings. 'I've been WAITING FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO BRING THIS UP,' one person wrote in the comments section of Shandy's post. Someone else quipped about Evan Jonigkeit's character: 'It was definitely Graham, add that to the list of reasons we don't like him.' Another fan came to the conclusion, 'There is not reasonable explanation which makes this hilarious.' But a more knowledgable consumer shared an explanation for the puzzling display. 'Those are mac n cheese frozen meals, friend,' they shared. And a different social media user said knowingly, 'Any time a brand or logo is shown in a movie, it is a product placement. So many people are talking about this so they did their job.' The Hunting Wives is adapted from a bestselling book, and the sex-fueled show has struck a chord with audiences since its July 21 premiere. The eight-part series is based on author May Cobb's erotic thriller of the same name and adapted by Rebecca Cutler, who said she was in 'awe of its flagrant horniness.' It doesn't shy away from full-frontal nudity, no-holds-barred sex, and steamy make-out sessions that have earned it comparisons to Big Little Lies and Desperate Housewives. Viewers are introduced to its protagonist Sophie as she relocates to deep-red Texas from Boston with her husband Graham. She finds herself embroiled in the lives of a mysterious and exclusive group of gun-toting MAGA women dubbed The Hunting Wives. Among them is Margo (Malin Åckerman), who lures Sophie into their world of sex, scandal, and salacious gossip. Margo and her husband, Texas governor hopeful Jed (Dermot Mulroney), have an open relationship that gives the high-flying socialite freedom to have flings with younger men, such as the barely-legal Brad (George Ferrier) and also women like her friend Callie (Jaime Ray Newman).

Shopping expert Angel Madison spotted popular sets on sale for up to 62 percent off. Some, including a personal favorite of Madison's, were down to as little as $5. 'I've done the work of scouring the Walmart website for deals at all price ranges, so you can grab a birthday gift or treat yourself in a major way,' she wrote for Country Living. 'If you are a truly last-minute shopper (like me) and even two-day shipping is too long, you can order most of these online, and pick it up at a store near you without leaving the car.' In-store, Madison follows a simple rule of thumb for LEGO sales: Aim for over 20 percent off on small to mid-size sets under $100, and look for 10 percent or more off on larger sets. 'LEGO sets are typically priced based on how many bricks are in the set, and for me, this over $30 and under $100 range is the sweet spot,' she explained. 'They are easy enough to build in a night, while still making an impressive addition to any book shelf.' The 62 percent off star of Madison's list is the Botanicals Field Flowers. 'I love dandelions, and currently have four of these in a bouquet because I buy them whenever I see them under $10,' she revealed. Customers looking for a more adult botanical set may also be interested in the plum blossom, a popular pick available for $24. 'Right now they are $5, and can be assembled in just a few minutes. I've already added another set to my cart.' She also praised the Peppa Pig DUPLO set, the $24 item suitable for children ages two and up that can float. While Madison did not reveal if she owns the Peppa Pig product, she proudly showed off two other favorites: the Disney and Pixar Up House and the Moana 2 HeiHei, which start at $38 and $32 respectively. 'The Up house proudly sits by my desk, and looks so fun with the colorful balloons on top,' she wrote, adding that the Moana HeiHei was 'a blast to assemble.' LEGO fans who aren't interested in Disney films can also purchase the Wicked Elphaba and Glinda duo, which costs $44 now that it's 20 percent off. Walmart shopper Angel Madison spotted fan favorite LEGO toys on sale for up to 62 percent off Besides the simple products, Madison revealed the must-have products that are worth looking at. 'The hard-to-find Back to the Future DeLorean is on sale, and it is one that I've seen sell out before,' she revealed. She also praised the Harry Potter castle set, which costs $141 when its 17 percent discount is applied. Out of all the products Madison has mentioned, the $180 A-Frame Cabin is her dream come true set, with 'charming details' like trees and animals. If Walmart sells out, shoppers can still find these sets at LEGO stores and .
