Oil at cheapest in 4 years as Opec+ expedites output hike

Brent crude futures and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude had settled at their lowest since February 2021 on Monday, driven by an Opec+ decision over the weekend to further speed up oil production hikes for a second consecutive month read more
Oil prices rebounded over 1% on Tuesday with technical rebound and dip buying after a drop in prior session by Opec+ decision to accelerate increases in output, although concerns about the market surplus outlook persisted.
Brent crude futures rose 92 cents to $61.15 a barrel by 0309 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude added 89 cents to $58.02 a barrel.
Both benchmarks had settled at their lowest since February 2021 on Monday, driven by an Opec+ decision over the weekend to further speed up oil production hikes for a second consecutive month.

'Today's slight rebound in oil prices appears more technical than fundamental,' said Yeap Jun Rong, a market strategist at IG. 'Persistent headwinds, including a pivotal shift in Opec+ production strategy, uncertain demand amid U.S. tariff risks, and price forecast downgrades, are continuing to weigh on the broader price movement.'
Driven by expectations that production will exceed consumption, oil has lost over 10% in six straight sessions and dipped over 20% since April, when U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff shocks prompted increased bets on a slowdown in the global economy.
The return of Chinese market participants after a five-day public holiday since May 1 was seen supporting prices on Tuesday.
'China also reopened today, and being the largest importer, buyers would have likely jumped to secure oil at current low levels,' said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at Phillip Nova.
Also lending some support was data showing a pick-up in the services sector's growth in the U.S., the world's major oil consumer, as orders increased.
The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said on Monday its non-manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI) increased to 51.6 last month from 50.8 in March. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the services PMI dipping to 50.2.

The U.S. Federal Reserve will likely leave interest rates unchanged on Wednesday as tariffs roil the economic outlook.
Barclays lowered its Brent crude forecast on Monday by $4 to $70 a barrel for 2025 and set its 2026 estimate at $62 a barrel, citing 'a rocky road ahead for fundamentals' amid escalating trade tensions and Opec+'s pivot in its production strategy.

Hyundai Motor has rare earths stockpile that could last about a year

Hyundai Motor has a rare earths stockpile that can last about a year and it does not expect any near-term impact from global supply chain disruptions caused by China's export curbs, said a person who attended a company investor call. China's decision in April to restrict exports of a wide range of rare earths and related magnets has tripped up the supply chains central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world. The stockpiling by Hyundai, the world's No.3 automaker along with its affiliate Kia Corp, indicates it is better-placed than many competitors to withstand restrictions that have already impacted production or the supplier network of companies including Ford and BMW. A Hyundai investor relations official said the South Korean automaker had "far more wiggle room" than rivals with regard to rare earths-related supply chain issues affecting the industry, according to the attendee on the investor call, which was not open to the public. The official told investors Hyundai's efforts to diversify supply chains and improve procurement had succeeded and the company expected to be able to produce electric vehicles or hybrid cars without disruptions "for at least about one year," the attendee said. Hyundai also significantly boosted its rare earths inventories during a recent period when China had slightly relaxed its export restrictions, the official said, according to the attendee who spoke on condition of anonymity because the call was private. The South Korean automaker's stockpile of the key minerals had not been reported previously. It was not clear whether the inventory was solely stockpiled by Hyundai and its affiliate Kia or also included stocks held by their suppliers. "We continuously evaluate market conditions to ensure operational stability and maintain a diversified global supply chain," Hyundai said. "As part of our standard business practices, we maintain appropriate inventory levels to support uninterrupted production." China produces around 90 per cent of the world's rare earths, which are essential for the production of vehicles, especially electric vehicle motors. Hyundai Motor Group also holds about a one-year inventory of rare earths-related magnets needed for its mainstay EVs and hybrid vehicles, said a person familiar with the matter, declining to be named due to the sensitivity of the subject. China's dominance of the critical mineral industry is increasingly viewed as a key point of leverage for Beijing in the trade war sparked by US President Donald Trump's tariffs. US-China trade talks were set to extend to a second day in London on Tuesday as top economic officials from the world's two largest economies sought to defuse a bitter dispute that has widened from tariffs to restrictions over rare earths.

From BEL, HAL to Mishra Dhatu Nigam— defence stocks surge amid reports of Indian Army to get ₹30,000 crore QRSAM boost

Several defence stocks, including BEL, HAL and Mishra Dhatu Nigam, saw healthy gains in intraday trade on Tuesday, June 10, amid reports that the Indian Army is all set to get a ₹ 30,000 crore boost with a new surface-to-air missile system. The Nifty India Defence index rose by over a per cent during the session, with stocks such as Dynamatic Technologies, Data Patterns (India), Astra Microwave Products and DCX Systems, jumping 2-7 per cent. According to an ANI report, the Indian Army is all set to get a ₹ 30,000 crore boost with a new surface-to-air missile system, which the Defence Ministry could soon approve for acquisition. "The Defence Ministry is scheduled to take up the proposal for buying three regiments of the indigenous Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile system (QRSAM) for the Army Air Defence for deployment along both western and northern borders," ANI reported, quoting defence officials saying so. The ANI report further added that the Army Air Defence is also getting a number of new radars, very short-range air defence systems, along with jammers and laser-based systems to deal with drones of Turkish and Chinese origin. Defence stocks have been on a solid uptrend in the wake of Operation Sindoor in May. Defence stocks such as Garden Reach Shipbuilders, Cochin Shipyard, Zen Technologies, BEML, Mishra Dhatu Nigam, Data Patterns, BDL and BEL have surged 25-80 per cent over the last one month. Stocks such as Solar Industries, MTAR Technologies, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Dynamatic Tech, HAL, Cyient DLM and Paras Defence have jumped 10-25 per cent in the same period. Experts say defence stocks still remain long-term bets due to their solid growth prospects. However, due to the recent rise in stock prices, there could be intermittent profit booking. "Defence stocks have more steam left for the long term. There could be some profit booking now and then. The story is intact for the long term due to expectations of an increase in the defence budget. So, investors should remain invested for at least the next one to two years," said Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd. Tapse recommends buying four defence stocks- Data Patterns, HAL, BEL and BEML- for the long term. He pointed out that the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has transferred nine advanced defence technologies to ten public and private sector partners, which could benefit stocks like BEL and BEML.
