REVIEW: `Book People' by Paige Nick gets thumbs up from Mandy Wiener
It was recently released at book festivals at Franschhoek in the Western Cape and Kingsmead in Gauteng.
Nick runs the Facebook group, 'The Good Book Appreciation Society', where people go to review books and share recommendations.
Wiener says the book is based on the drama of that group. Although she says it must be fictionalised because the group is quite well-behaved.
Paige says Wiener may have missed about 5% of posts. She says things can get heated and out of control on the page when there are topics like Trump and Musk or Israel and Palestine.

Vultures fly free after being rescued from muti-trade
Two Cape vultures that were destined for the muti trade were part of a group of five, were released to fly free in the Magaliesberg near Hartbeespoort recently, after a long rehabilitation road at Vulpro, an organisation whose sole focus is saving Africa's vultures. According to Tracy Karam of Vulpro in Hartbeespoort, an adult female Cape vulture was rescued a year ago after being illegally captured for the muti trade. 'Acting on information received, law enforcement authorities seized the bird and brought her to Vulpro for treatment and rehabilitation. On arrival she was severely dehydrated, emaciated, and had all her wings' feathers removed. 'It took nearly a year for her feathers to regrow fully before we could even consider her release,' Karam said. A second female was rescued in Limpopo after also being illegally captured for the muti trade. 'She arrived at Vulpro on 28 December 2024 in critical condition – emaciated, dehydrated, and suffering from a pneumothorax. We were deeply concerned about potential damage to her organs and her overall chances of recovery. 'After months of intensive care, she has regained full strength and health. Today, she was released to live free and wild again.' The other three vultures that were released as part of the group, were rescued after being injured in the wild. Gayton McKenzie reacts to Glen Gabela's heartbreaking video
Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has responded to the desperate plea made by former Uzalo actor Glen Gabela. The struggling actor has been the talk of social media after a video of him asking for help went viral. The clip shows his dusty bedroom lined with accolades. It also reveals his fridge with only bottles of water and an almost empty cupboard. Gabela revealed that he is battling hardship and appealed for financial support. On Thursday, 14 August 2025, the minister responded to social media user @kingmntungwa, who had tagged him in Gabela's viral video on X, prompting a wave of reactions online. 'Thanks, will follow up and revert back today. This is extremely sad.' While pleading for financial assistance, the actor said he simply wants to live a decent life. 'I want a decent life, to be treated with dignity like every normal person. That's why I am reaching out. I'm trying to engage with people because I want to grow the film industry, so that young and upcoming performers don't end up like us,' he said 'You listen to the stories of top actors when they pass [away], you listen to the stories told and how they struggled. Almost all of us, when we reach this age, reach a stage where we … it's a pity I am not able to ask for help. It's hard for me to ask for help. That's all I need, just to live decently, I don't need to be rich. I just need to live a decent life,' he added.
