Investigation continues into André Naude's murder five weeks later

Five weeks after alleged underworld figure André Naude was murdered, police have confirmed no arrests have been made.
Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk, said: 'Kindly be advised that the matter you are referring to is still under investigation. There are no new developments to report to the media at this stage.'
Naude was shot and killed in a hail of bullets on June 12 in Voortrekker Road, Parow.
Police said he had been in the company of friends when he was ambushed by gunmen inside a vehicle.
Naude, 55, died at the scene while a 61-year-old man was wounded and two others aged 45 and 55 were unharmed.
IOL reported that at the weekend, two lives were lost during a shooting in Voortrekker Road in Parow.
It is understood that a gunman in a silver VW Polo had opened fire.
Police spokesperson, Joseph Swartbooi, said two persons were killed and two others left wounded during the shooting.

Naude was no stranger to controversy and was murdered just months after his apparent business partner, Mark Lifman was gunned down in a parking lot in George.
Both were charged with the murder of Brain Wainstein, known as the Steroid King.
Naude was also friends with alleged leader of the Sexy Boys, Jerome 'Donkie' Booysen.

Suspects arrested after using stolen Nelson Mandela Bay municipal bakkie for business robbery
A stolen municipal bakkie – with its signage and number plates removed – was recovered by Atlas Security in Walmer on Monday afternoon after it was flagged on its system as the getaway vehicle in a business robbery. On Saturday morning in Nelson Mandela Bay, fast-moving Atlas Security vehicles managed to catch suspects who had allegedly robbed a business using a stolen and disguised municipal vehicle. Atlas Security's Wayne Hart said early on Saturday morning that its CCTV network picked up a white Nissan Navara sought in connection with a business robbery. 'The Rapid Intervention Unit (RIU) team first spotted the vehicle heading into Walmer location with five occupants. Given the circumstances, our RIU and area vehicles monitored the movement, and continued visible patrols in Walmer and surrounding areas. 'A bit later, another alert came through. This time, the vehicle was picked up in Mangold Park through Atlas Security's CCTV infrastructure,' Hart said. He said two vehicles were stationed in 8th Avenue, Walmer. One vehicle covered Walmer Boulevard and two were assigned to Targetkloof. 'The Nissan Navara was located and quickly surrounded at the corner of 8th Avenue and Villiers Road in Walmer. At the scene, two suspects were found in the vehicle. Another was located nearby with his family. Our officers escorted the suspects and the vehicle to Walmer Police Station, where a closer inspection confirmed it was a stolen municipal vehicle,' Hart said. 'The suspects had tried to cover up its identity by painting over the official unit numbers and municipal markings with white house paint, and fitting false number plates,' he added. The theft of fleet vehicles belonging to municipalities and the provincial Department of Transport has notably increased since the beginning of the year. Last Thursday, a vehicle belonging to the road construction team of the Eastern Cape Department of Transport was hijacked at gunpoint and its driver held hostage at Askeaton just outside Cofimvaba, where roadworks are in progress. Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said a group of armed men in a VW Polo forcefully stopped the foreman who was driving the double-cab bakkie. 'They demanded keys to the bakkie, put him in the backseat and drove with him for some distance before releasing him. He managed to contact the office and the police to report the incident. The vehicle tracker was immediately activated and, hours later, the bakkie was found abandoned in a forest at a village in Cofimvaba,' Binqose said. He added that the thieves had already stripped the vehicle of parts. This was the fifth attack on government vehicles since June. In the other cases, yellow fleet vehicles, used in road construction, were hijacked by armed men at several sites. One of the attacks occurred on the R61, where a team of road workers had to run for their lives as gunshots were fired in the crane truck they were travelling in. The team was fixing potholes between Engcobo and Dutywa, and was on their way to Komani when the incident happened. Binqose said the team had to abandon the truck and run into a nearby village, where they were able to call the police for assistance. 'The truck was still there as a bullet damaged one of its engine components. It was towed to the Cofimvaba Police Station,' he added. Previously, armed men also stole a truck and took its wheels, and then stole the department's bakkie as a getaway vehicle. In June, a tipper truck was stolen and later recovered in Elliotdale. DM

When The Star visited the school on July 29, the scene was chaotic and alarming. Learners played and sat idly around the school premises after the day was abruptly dismissed, without any prior notice to parents. Those living nearby were quickly collected, but many children relying on transport were left unattended, exposed to open trenches and scattered construction equipment that posed serious safety risks. Yolanda Base, a distraught grandmother, shared her anguish over her granddaughter's recent injury on school grounds. A sharp piece of construction debris cut the child's ear, a frightening incident that could have been far worse. 'They took her to the clinic, and thank God it wasn't worse, but she got hurt at school, a place where she's supposed to be safe. It breaks my heart. They don't care about us or our children. This staggering overcrowding creates an unmanageable and unsafe learning environment. Community leader and mother of two, Shedean Bennered described the mobile classrooms as structurally unsound. 'Some of the mobile classrooms are broken, without windows, and the wooden floors wobble when you walk in. Imagine 60 children packed inside those. It's a disaster waiting to happen, yet our kids are expected to learn there,' she said. Construction delays have prolonged exposure to dangerous conditions, including exposed electrical wiring and open trenches across the school grounds. On top of this, parents revealed another recent safety incident: a learner was hit by a car outside the school gates, a tragedy they attribute to poor security and lack of vigilance. Parents also raised concerns about academic delays, with many learners yet to receive second-term report cards. 'Only about 20% of our kids can read properly. The rest are struggling, and nothing is being done,' one parent lamented. Frustration with the Department of Education's handling of the crisis is mounting. Many parents questioned why learners were not relocated to safer schools during construction, accusing officials of negligence that endangers children and disrupts learning. Image: Supplied Further fueling anger are allegations against the school's principal, accused of weak leadership and allowing teachers to arrive late without consequences. Parents claim the principal regularly drinks at a local tavern, undermining trust in his ability to manage the school effectively. 'Our children are suffering in dangerous, overcrowded classrooms while the principal shows no leadership,' a parent said. 'He's out drinking while we're fighting to protect our kids' futures. How can we trust a system that doesn't care if our children are safe or learning?' The Rabie Ridge community is demanding immediate intervention. They want learners moved to safer facilities while construction continues, the principal removed, and stronger oversight to ensure the safety and quality of education. Speaking to The Star, Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department is aware of the issues at Dulcie September Primary and has taken steps to address them, with classes set to resume on August 4. Mabona explained that the contractor completed the relocation of mobile classrooms within the set timeline, clarifying that their responsibility was limited to moving the structures, not performing repairs or upgrades. He added that the department has appointed professionals to monitor the work and ensure it meets the necessary standards. He further stated that there are no open trenches, and visible wires are safe. Some trenches were caused by the theft of school materials. 'There are no open trenches, and while some wires are visible, they are not live or hazardous. It is important to note that trenches were at some point created by some community members who stole some materials from the school.' Mabona said. He added that The MEC's office has been actively involved throughout and continues to engage with the School Governing Body. Man arrested for killing 13-month-old baby and injuring mother in Mankweng
A 13-month-old baby girl tragically killed in Mankweng after being run over by a pickup van driven by her mother's ex-boyfriend. Image: Supplied A 35-year-old man has been arrested in Mankweng, Limpopo, for allegedly killing a 13-month-old baby girl and severely injuring her mother by deliberately driving over them with a pickup van. The horrific incident occurred on the evening of July 26, around 8.05pm, when the mother and her baby were reportedly waiting for a taxi to Segopye village. Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the suspect, believed to be the woman's ex-boyfriend, approached them and 'started to have a heated argument with her.' Despite the escalating confrontation, a taxi soon arrived and the woman, clutching her child, quickly boarded. However, the drama didn't end there. As they were en route, the taxi driver reportedly warned the mother that a pickup van was following closely behind. When they got off at Marothi (Makwalaneng) Cross, tragedy struck. Tragically, the baby girl later succumbed to her injuries, while the mother sustained significant leg wounds. Police have since registered a case of murder and attempted murder.
