Film hailed ‘one of the greatest ever made' now available on Amazon Prime
Das Boot, released in 1981, is often deemed one of the greatest war movies of all time, telling the story of the German submarine U-96 and its crew as they set out on patrol in the Battle of the Atlantic.
It is based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim's 1973 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name and was nominated for six Academy Awards.
Wolfgang Petersen's masterpiece was the German film with the most Oscar nominations until 2022, when All Quiet on the Western Front snatched the title.
Despite Buchheim expressing his displeasure with the film adaptation, Das Boot received a sequel in the form of a TV series in 2018, set nine months after the events of the original film.
Overall, high production costs make it one of the most expensive films in German cinematic history, but it was certainly worth splashing the cash on, becoming a commercial success and grossing nearly $85million worldwide, which is equivalent to $277m (£202m) in today's money.
The film currently holds a near-perfect 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics' consensus reading: 'Taut, breathtakingly thrilling, and devastatingly intelligent, Das Boot is one of the greatest war films ever made.'
RogerEbert.com said Das Boot has 'enough nerve-wracking suspense to make your heart pound against your chest like depth charges rupturing a submarine's hull.'
Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote: 'This is the finest submarine movie ever made. Although director Wolfgang Petersen emphasizes the claustrophobia of undersea life, his above-surface scenes are powerful as well.'
Meanwhile, Associated Press said: 'Peterson has captured the teamwork, the claustrophobia and the peril of underwater warfare. He draws compelling performances from the crewmen, many of them quite young.'
'The execution is second to none; taut, claustrophobic and overwhelming,' Empire summarised.
Time Out added: 'Petersen's shooting style displays a breathtaking, if impersonal and faintly academic, virtuosity comparable to that of Lean or Coppola.'
Speaking to No Frills Sailing in 2019, Das Boot star Martin May explained how the film impacted his life.
'Well, the answer is quite clear: It shaped everybody profoundly who had the honour to be part of the crew, no matter of before or behind the lenses,' he said. More Trending
'So did it shape me: It meant the best possible start into my career of being an actor.
'It … really is still even to date the most professional produced, best executed movie production I ever worked with – and I know that many of my colleagues feel this way too.
'Wolfgang Petersen is the most complete director I ever worked with – we were making a movie for almost one year without a single occasion of yelling, can you imagine that.'
Das Boot is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video

Outlander Blood of My Blood gets top ratings on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of release
Critics took to Rotten Tomatoes to say the Starz spin-off show 'maintains the magic' of the original Since its debut more than a decade ago, Outlander has amassed a global fanbase. The historical romance series, centring round Claire Randall/Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), saw their love affair quickly capture hearts. However with the show nearing its end with the eighth and final season set for 2026, the phenomenon is expanding in the form of a spin-off to Diana Gabaldon's treasured franchise. Blood of My Blood is set to air to audiences later this week, August 8. The series will follow two new love stories, one which starts on the battlefields of the Western Front during World War I and the other in the meadows of Scotland in the early 18th century. It will unravel the tale of both Jamie and Claire Fraser's parents. Jamie's dad, Brian Fraser, died just mere days after the Highland warrior's second flogging from Randall in Outlander. Although we are yet to get a taste of the spin-off, some critics have shared their glowing reviews ahead of its release. Taking to Rotten Tomatoes, one confirmed that the 'magic' of Outlander is also apparent in the spin-off. "Outlander: Blood of My Blood unquestionably maintains the magic of the original show, a steamy, emotional, addictively watchable prequel that succeeds at everything fans have loved from the beginning," one person wrote. Another critic noted: "Lush, complex, beautifully shot and structured, this prequel is a thrilling addition to a franchise that has enraptured audiences from the beginning." A third said: "Outlander: Blood of My Blood is more than a prequel; it's a necessary story to tell both for the world and because of its themes." "Who could turn down another serving of such a decadent treat, especially when made with such obvious love for the original? It's clear that 'Blood of My Blood' is certainly reveling in its ability to deliver Outlander fan service," another critic remarked. One simply wrote: "Starz's Outlander saga had seduced me fully once again". One section of the series follows the love story between Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), who are Jamie's parents. The rest of the prequel follows the romance between Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield), who are Claire's parents. Featuring as a stand-alone series, any fans dreading the impending forever Droughtlander should be sure not to miss this one. "The series will centre on these two parallel love stories set in two different eras, with Jamie's parents in the early 18th-century Scottish Highlands and Claire's parents in WWI England," according to the official synopsis. Matthew B. Roberts, the showrunner of Outlander, will also serve as the showrunner and executive producer on the spin-off series. The first season will compose of 10 episodes. Maril Davis and Ronald D. Moore will also join as executive producers, with Outlander author Diana Gabaldon acting as a consulting producer.

German Shepherd and Retriever have puppies and not everyone happy with result
An Instagram reel has gone viral after a pet owner shared a video of their two 'Golden Shephards' An Instagram reel has gone viral, amassing over 2.4 million views, 82 thousand likes, and 766 comments at last count. A content creator's rescue dogs are causing quite the stir, igniting both adoration and lively discussion amongst canine enthusiasts. The Instagram account @lifewithgoldenshepherds regularly posts reels featuring their two rescue pups, Bear and Nala, much to the delight of online viewers. The dogs, referred to as Golden Shepherds, are a charming mix of a golden retriever father and German shepherd mother, as explained in the clip. "They are a perfect combination of loyal, alert, protective and sweet!", proclaims the text overlay, adding, "and that's my life with Golden Shepherds.", reports the Express. The caption accompanying the viral footage states: "Meet our Golden Shepherd: loyal like a German Shepherd, loving like a Golden Retriever. You get the fluff, the smarts, and the snuggles in one perfect package. Tag someone who needs to know about this amazing breed!". The digital creator's post has been flooded with glowing remarks and affection for the pair, with one Instagram user commenting: "That's gotta be the best mix ever. Loving and derpy like goldens but smart and trainable like shepherds!". Meanwhile, another user shared: "I have a golden shepherd as well except she's gold with the pointy ears. Seriously the best of both breeds!" One dog lover playfully commented: "I feel like mine, who I adopted when he was 9 months old, got the hyper energy of a Shepard, the intelligence of the golden and the bravery of a chicken. Also he would sell all our secrets for a bone." Another user gushed: "Omg golden fluffy protecting sweethearts? ! I think I want one." However, not everyone was pleased with the creator's choice of words in referring to their dog as a 'breed', with one user writing: "Breed? This is a MUTT. stop purposefully breeding dogs and calling them their own breeds. Adopt don't shop, anyone breeding dogs like this should be ashamed of themselves." Another individual wrote: "Not a breed, only breed this is backyard breed. Ethical breeders don't make mutts." While one argued: "Absolutely nothing wrong with loving your pups but let's not promote unethical breeding practices." And a fourth disgruntled user said: "Stop glorifying mixed breeds. If you want one, go to a shelter. This rubbish will just give backyard breeders more ideas on what mutts they can exploit next. "Glad they are rescues," one user commented, "But humans being disgusting and greedy as they are, I can see someone intentionally seeking out a designer mutt." The reel's comment section points to a wider dialogue in the pet community about ethical breeding and the importance of adopting pets versus buying them from breeders.
