British singer Example forced to cancel gig just hours after performing at Glastonbury as he apologises to fans
Example has issued an apology to fans after pulling out of a gig on Saturday night just hours after performing at Glastonbury. The singer and songwriter, 43, performed on the Shangri-La stage at the iconic music festival on Friday night. However, after his set, he was forced to cancel another appearance on Saturday night in a move that disappointed fans. Example, whose real name is Elliot John Gleave, was due to perform at Granite City Festival in Aberdeen. In a statement to his fans, the musician said: 'During my set at Glastonbury, we experienced some unexpected sound issues that forced me to push my voice much harder than usual. 'I could feel it starting to go, so we made the difficult decision to cut the set short by 20 minutes to protect it ahead of today's performance at Granite City Festival Aberdeen. 'I left the site immediately after the show and arrived at Gatwick by 7am, managing to get a few hours' sleep before my flight to Aberdeen. 'Unfortunately when I woke up, my voice was completely gone. 'I hate cancelling shows - over the past 21 years, I've played 1,534 gigs and only ever cancelled 11. 'Scotland has always been my favourite place to perform and this was an incredibly hard decision to make. 'To everyone who was planning to see me today - and to the Granite City Festival team - I'm truly sorry. 'We'll make it up to you, E x.' Example later clarified he wasn't making a dig at the production crew at Glastonbury, and said he had to rest up to fly back to Australia and be a 'professional dad'. At the start of this year the singer welcomed his third child - and first - with girlfriend Daisy Cox. Confirming his girlfriend had gone into labour a month early, Example told fans: 'Lucas Winter Cox Gleave. Aka Lukey Baby… aka Gorge Lucas. 01.01.25. 'Arrived 4 weeks ahead of schedule and he's absolutely perfect. Best NYD present ever. And no one gonna forget his birthday ever. Mummy and baby doing great.' Example announced his relationship with Daisy, who bears a striking resemblance to his ex-wife, in March 2023. Five months earlier, the musician revealed his nine year marriage to Erin - an Australian actress - was over, with the former couple focused on raising their two sons, Evander, ten, and Ennio, 7. Addressing the separation in a joint statement, they wrote: 'At the start of the UK summer we decided to separate. We have had an amazing 11 years together, but just a few too many adventures. Example announced his relationship with Daisy, who bears a striking resemblance to his ex-wife, in March 2023. 'Obviously we spent a lot of time behind the scenes trying to figure things out, but we came to the realisation that perhaps our time as a couple had just come to a natural end. There has been surge in Britons applying for 'golden visas' in southern European countries following Labour's general election victory, it has been revealed. An analysis by Astons, a global investment immigration firm, showed there was an almost 50 per cent increase in applications to Greece from the UK since last summer. The country offers a five-year residency permit for those who invest from upwards of 250,000 euros in property. In the year to April, there were 626 applications to the scheme granted to people from the UK, the latest Greek government statistics revealed. That was up from 427 the year before – a 46.6 per cent rise – according to the Astons analysis. There were 389 applications from the UK in 2024 for Portugal's similar scheme, compared with 234 the year before - a 66.2 per cent increase. Alena Lesina, of Astons, said the firm had seen 'a clear uptick in interest from UK nationals exploring residency-by-investment programmes over the past year'. 'While the broader economic and tax environment in the UK is certainly a driver, what's notable is the evolving profile of applicants,' she told the Telegraph. 'These schemes are no longer the preserve of ultra-high net worth individuals alone. 'We're increasingly advising middle class families, remote-working professionals, and even retirees who are re-evaluating their lifestyle priorities post-pandemic. 'For many, it's about quality of life, future planning, and unlocking mobility in an increasingly uncertain global climate.' After winning power, Labour hiked taxes on businesses and imposed VAT on private school fees. And there are warnings of further tax raids to come at this year's Budget. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has been left with a hole in the public finances following recent U-turns on axing winter fuel payments for millions of pensioners, and on cutting benefits. Figures for other European countries showed the popularity of golden visas with Britons had been growing before Labour's election victory. For example, Spain had 3,601 applications from Britons in 2023 - a rise of almost 70 per cent on 2022. The country closed its golden visa scheme this April. Tory MP Andrew Griffith, the shadow business secretary, told the newspaper: 'It pains me that the young, ambitious, optimistic people our country needs are leaving because they think they can have a better life outside the UK. 'This just demonstrates the far-reaching consequences of Labour's punishing tax rises, which are wreaking untold damage on the economy. 'There is a real danger that Rachel Reeves' ideological war on aspiration will backfire and leave the state of the public finances even worse off. 'It wouldn't be a surprise if the OBR now forecasts lower tax takings in the autumn, leaving the Chancellor with an even bigger black hole to fill.' A Treasury spokesman said: 'Our tax system is fair and progressive, and keeps the UK an attractive place to live. 'The UK's main capital gains tax rate is lower than any other G7 European country, and we are committed to keeping taxes for working people as low as possible. 'That's why, at last autumn's Budget, we protected working people's payslips and kept our promise to not raise the basic, higher or additional rates of income tax, employee National Insurance or VAT.'

Streeting tells Israel to get its own ‘house in order' over West Bank violence
Health Secretary Wes Streeting has said Israel needs to 'get your own house in order' and take violence against Palestinians 'more seriously'. He said that chants calling for 'death' to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) at Glastonbury were 'appalling'. But Mr Streeting also urged Israel to look at the conduct of its own citizens and settlers in the West Bank. Rapper Bobby Vylan, of rap punk duo Bob Vylan, on Saturday led crowds on the Glastonbury Festival's West Holts Stage in chants of 'Free, free Palestine' and 'Death, death to the IDF'. On social media, the Israeli embassy had said the performances raise concerns about the 'normalisation of extremist language and the glorification of violence'. The Health Secretary drew the comparison of his support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, telling Sky News's Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips that he would not be 'celebrating or chanting for the death of Russian soldiers' but calling for an end to the conflict. 'I'd also say to the Israeli embassy, get your own house in order in terms of the conduct of your own citizens and the settlers in the West Bank. 'So, you know, I think there's a serious point there by the Israeli embassy I take seriously. I wish they'd take the violence of their own citizens towards Palestinians more seriously.' Speaking to the BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme he pointed to the actions of Israeli settlers in the West Bank in the past week. He appeared to be referring to an attack by settlers in a town in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Palestinian authorities said that three people were killed after more than 100 settlers entered the town on Wednesday, set property ablaze and opened fire on residents who tried to stop them. Mr Streeting said: 'What happened in the West Bank this week by Israeli settler terrorists needs to not only be condemned, it needs to be acted upon, and Israel cannot continue to look the other way while its own people are carrying out … acts of terrorism and violence. 'They wouldn't tolerate it rightly against their own citizens. Their citizens are doing it to Palestinians, and it's got to stop.' The Israeli embassy in the UK has been contacted for comment. Sir Keir Starmer's Government has stepped up pressure on Israel over the conflict in Gaza in recent months. It paused negotiations on a UK-Israel trade deal and sanctioned two hardline ministers in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet. Bezalel Smotrich has campaigned against allowing aid into Gaza, and also supported the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which are considered illegal under international law. Itamar Ben-Gvir has called for Gaza's people to be resettled from the territory.
