GRS is still in the game, says Anwar on political cooperation for Sabah polls

The Star11-05-2025
TAWAU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is not out of the picture yet when it comes to political cooperation, despite the recent alliance between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional, according to PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said he had just discussed the matter with Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, during which they talked about continuing collaboration between Pakatan and GRS.
"I thank Hajiji for his views that the collaboration between GRS and PH should be enhanced. As for the negotiation between GRS and Barisan, if they want to work together, I leave it to GRS and BN. However, for us in PH, we agree to leave the matter to Sabah, led by Hajiji, to negotiate and find a solution moving forward.
'Because what is important for us is that Sabah's condition is stable and is able to work with the federal government,' he said when met by reporters at the Tawau Airport after he attended the Sabah PKR State Leadership Council meeting on Sunday (May 11).
When asked if he believes that GRS, Pakatan, and Barisan could collaborate in the state election, Anwar stated that he could only speak on behalf of Pakatan, and he remains optimistic.
'I also see that Hajiji's attitude is very positive, while we have also discussed with PH and they think the same. The rest of it, I leave it for them to vote,' he said.
Anwar was in Tawau for the Program Madani Rakyat. Earlier, he made a courtesy visit to Sabah Head of State Tun Musa Aman during lunch.
Last Friday, Pakatan and Barisan announced their agreement to cooperate for the upcoming Sabah state election.
In a joint statement, Pakatan secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Unity Government Secretariat chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the decision was reached during a top leadership meeting involving Anwar and BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on May 8.
Following this, Hajiji said GRS would contest solo in the state election if Pakatan and Barisan proceed with their collaboration.
'It is essential that the Sabah government remains led by local parties that understand the aspirations of the people. Straying from this principle would risk ignoring the voices of many Sabahans," Hajiji said in a statement on May 9.
GRS consists of eight parties, including Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, Parti Bersatu Sabah, Sabah Progressive Party, Sabah Star, United Sabah National Organisation, Parti Cinta Sabah, Liberal Democratic Party and Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah. Meanwhile, Sabah Pakatan has four parties — United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation, PKR, DAP and Amanah.

RM600,000 to help e-hailing workers open up EPF account in Sabah

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor posing with the Sabah Moto Day participants while sitting on a motorcycle. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 17): The State Government will allocate about RM600,000 for gig workers in the e-hailing sector to open up Employees Provident Fund (EPF) account. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said a total 11,109 applications have been received from e-hailing workers to contribute to the EPF. 'I would like to announce that the State Government is allocating nearly RM600,000 to assist those (e-hailing workers) who have yet to open up their EPF account,' he said at the Sabah Moto Day 8.0 at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Drill Field near here on Sunday. Hajiji was also glad to note that Sabah Moto Day continued to grow exponentially attracting about 60,000 motorcylists and motor enthusiasts from all over Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei this year. The presence of many riders and visitors proved that motorcycling activities continue to hold a place in the hearts of youths and the general public, he said. 'I am impressed to see the support shown by all participants, regardless of age, race and religion, coming together to share the same passion. 'We should view this gathering from a positive perspective, as it can contribute, to some extent, to the economic generation of our state due to the large number of participants and visitors in conjunction with this programme, he said. Advising participants of the Sabah Moto Day to prioritise safety while on road, Hajiji also hoped the gathering would help create greater safety awareness among the two- wheeler enthusiasts. The Chief Minister also informed the participants that the State Government viewed youths as asset, hence various initiatives have been implemented to develop the human capital. The State Government of today had spent a total RM1.33 billion including RM848.26 million for education assistance and RM485 million specifically for talent and skills development programmes from 2021 to 2025, he said. 'This has never been done by previous state governments. We are committed to develop our youths who are our future leaders,' he said. At the end of his speech, Hajiji also led the participants to offer Al-Fatihah prayer for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir.

PBS calls on members to rally behind GRS in upcoming elections

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) has reminded its members of the support provided by Pakatan Harapan during the January 2023 Sabah political crisis. PBS acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said that if it were not for Pakatan at that time, PBS might have been in the opposition stand. In that event, Sabah Barisan had withdrawn its support for Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), but Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor remained in power with the backing of Sabah Pakatan assemblymen. Gunsalam said this was why GRS would continue to work with Pakatan in the coming state election and why there was a need for PBS members to give their full support. Gunsalam called on all party members to also stay united and work with other GRS partners to face the upcoming state election. He advised against blindly trusting social media messages, as there were daily efforts to weaken the connection between PBS, Sabah STAR and Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah within GRS. 'If you have any doubts, ask your division chiefs for clarification. Division chiefs who are unsure of anything, please refer to the central leadership first before issuing any statement or response to any issues,' he said. Gunsalam said this when officiating the annual general meeting for three divisions: Lamag, Sukau and Sekong in Sandakan, on Saturday (Aug 16). His statement came after Sabah STAR stated its intention to contest in Chinese-majority seats in the coming state election. Chinese majority seats are usually allocated to partner parties in Pakatan. GRS is an eight-party coalition made up of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, Usno, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), Sabah STAR, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Parti Cinta Sabah.

‘Sabah for Sabahans' is not a threat

Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 Text Size: 'Sabah for Sabahans' is not a threat; it's a wake-up call. AHAMD Zahid Hamidi's call for Sabahans to look beyond the 'Sabah for Sabahans' sentiment and embrace national unity may appear, on the surface, as a plea for cohesion. However, such a message is dismissive of the deep historical grievances we Sabahans hold. When a national leader tells Sabahans to move on without first acknowledging or rectifying past injustices, it is not a call for unity but an attempt to sweep uncomfortable truths under the carpet. If national unity is truly the goal, it must be built on accountability, transparency, and mutual respect, not their disdainful expectation that historical wounds will be forgotten for the sake of their political expedience. Of course it is "divisive"—but only in the sense that it is intended to reclaim rightful space for Sabahans to prioritise our own needs. When every community looks after its own interests responsibly, society as a whole becomes stronger. No one can love or serve Sabah better than Sabahans ourselves. These slogans—"Sabah for Sabahans", "Sabah First" aren't acts of exclusion; they are affirmations of identity, autonomy, and the right to chart our own future. 'Sabah for Sabahans' is not a threat; it's a wake-up call. KP Mau The views expressed here are the views of the writer and do not necessarily reflect those of the Daily Express.
