Authorities Cannot Threaten Whistleblowers, Albert Tei Asked To Make Report
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran said this was because the authorities should protect whistleblowers under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 (Act 711).
'I have taken note of Albert Tei's lawyer today, regarding the allegation that Albert Tei had contacted the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) regarding a corruption scandal but was warned by MACC officers not to appear in public or he would face problems.
'This is a very serious allegation and is completely unacceptable… I would like to advise the individual named Albert Tei to immediately file a report regarding this issue with the Royal Malaysian Police and the MACC Complaints Committee under Section 15 of the MACC Act 2009 (Act 694) by naming the MACC officers involved in the allegation.
'I give full assurance that the MADANI Government will not compromise on issues of threats like these, and that stern action will be taken if the allegation is found to be true,' he said when winding up the debate on the Whistleblower Protection (Amendment) Bill 2025 in Parliament today.
The bill was later passed with a majority of votes in agreement after being debated by 24 Members of Parliament (MPs).
During the debate on the bill, several MPs raised the issue of a media report today regarding a statement by Albert Tei's lawyer, Mahajoth Singh, who claimed that his client was warned by the MACC not to come forward before he exposed the mining scandal in Sabah.
Regarding the Whistleblower Protection Committee in the amendment to the bill, Kulasegaran said the government would ensure that the committee's membership was free from conflicts of interest and of a high calibre.
He said that among the proposed members would be parties with knowledge and expertise in the aspect of whistleblower protection, including non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or civil society organisations (CSOs), as well as academic experts.

Police review CCTV footage after break-in at Mahathir's grandson's home
KUALA LUMPUR: Police are reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from surrounding areas following a break-in at the residence of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's grandson in Bukit Ledang. The incident, reported last Wednesday, resulted in the loss of jewellery worth RM1.8 million. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the CCTV system at the house, installed in the 1990s, had limited storage capacity and retained footage for only 24 hours. 'The footage was overwritten by the time the police report was made,' he explained during a press conference. Investigators have recorded statements from three individuals, including Dr Mahathir's grandson, a security guard, and a maid. Fingerprint analysis is also underway, though Mohamed Usuf noted the process may take time. The break-in was discovered by the maid at 3 pm last Wednesday after she found the rear gate cut and the employer's room ransacked. The house is reportedly an old property rarely visited by Dr Mahathir's grandchildren. Klang Valley drug syndicate busted with RM4.66m syabu seized
KUALA LUMPUR: Police dismantled a drug trafficking syndicate in the Klang Valley after arresting three men and confiscating 145.68kg of syabu valued at RM4.66 million. The operation, conducted on July 24, led to the seizure of drugs hidden in a car and a rented house in Puncak Jalil. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said two Malaysians, aged 32 and 61, and a 34-year-old Indonesian were detained at a shopping centre in Jalan Kuchai Lama. A search of their vehicle uncovered 10.34kg of syabu concealed in a cloth bag inside the boot. Further raids at a double-storey house in Puncak Jalil yielded an additional 135.34kg of the drug packed in 122 plastic packets. 'The total seizure could supply around 728,400 addicts,' said Mohamed Usuf. Investigations revealed the syndicate had rented the Puncak Jalil property since October last year for RM2,000 monthly, using it as a storage hub before distributing drugs locally and to Indonesia. The group is believed to have been active since May, sourcing supplies from overseas. Two of the suspects tested positive for drugs, with one having a prior drug-related warrant. All three have been remanded until July 31 under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. - Bernama
