Old Vaaltonians padel court is a hit

VANDERBIJLPARK – Old Vaaltonians boasts the newest padel court in the Vaal. The new court was officially opened on May 17.
'Old Vaal has always been dedicated to sports, particularly focusing on development and engaging the younger generations to nurture our future sports stars,' says club chairperson Dorette Daneel.
So, when longtime club member Darren Redfern and his business partner Ettiene Viviers from VR Padel approached the committee with the idea of building a padel court, it felt like a perfect fit.
Currently, there is only one court, but plans are already in place to add two more in the near future.
The court is open to both the public and club members, and there are exciting plans for coaching, youth development, leagues, and tournaments.
* Padel is described as a mixture of squash and tennis. The sport was founded in the late 1960s by a Mexican, Enrique Corcuera.
A padel racket is smaller than a tennis racket and not strung. Players can hit the ball after it bounces off a wall/fence to keep it in play.
Serving is underarm, and not overhead like in tennis. Four people mostly play padel in a game of doubles, but it can be played individually.

Most of the M4 will be closed to accommodate the Durban Isuzu Ironman 70.3 triathlon tomorrow (June 1). Motorists are urged to rather use the N2 for long-distance travel, although a number of M4 crossing points are available. M4 crossings Sibaya residents and visitors to Sibaya Casino can use Sibaya Drive for access. The crossing of the M4 at the M4/Sibaya Drive/Heleza Boulevard circle will be monitored by Saps. La Lucia and Durban North residents can cross at Ridge Road, Inca Drive, Hinton Grove and Swapo Road. Athlone Drive will remain open at Blue Lagoon. Mohalajeng hails the Vultures Athletics Club Gijima Road Race a success

SEBOKENG.- Petrus Mohalajeng has hailed the Vultures Athletics Club Gijima Road Race as a great success. This 5km and 10km road race took place at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre in Zone 14, Sebokeng, last Sunday. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Mohalajeng, who was the organiser of the race, said the race attracted several runners in Gauteng. He said that he was overwhelmed by the number of athletes who came to support this initiative. He also told Sedibeng Ster Sport that the Zone 14 area came to a standstill as the nearby community was out on the streets watching the race. Mohalajeng said the competition was strict with runners setting the bar very high on the day. He added that he was amazed by the high standard from all the participants, from juniors, seniors, masters, and grand masters. Toma Tsotetsi, Florence Molawa, and Palius Mofokeng were among the notable names who participated in this event. 'I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all the runners who won their respective categories. It was a great day, with athletes showcasing their talent. I was happy to see some former athletes coming in numbers to support this initiative. I do not doubt that, if we continue to support each other like on Sunday, we are going to go far in the region as far as athletics is concerned,' said Mohalajeng.
