Chris Woakes shows positive recovery from dislocated shoulder ahead of Ashes series

India Today18 hours ago
England pacer Chris Woakes has provided a welcome boost to the team's Ashes preparations by revealing positive news on his recovery from a dislocated shoulder. The 35-year-old sustained the injury while fielding during the fifth and final Test against India at The Oval earlier this month but is optimistic about his progress.Woakes, who has been a key figure in England's attack across formats, was ruled out of the remainder of the match after the incident. However, in a show of remarkable grit, he returned to bat on the tense final morning with his left arm in a sling as England pushed for a series-clinching win. Despite his efforts, the hosts fell just six runs short.advertisementSpeaking to Sky Sports on the sidelines of The Hundred, Woakes appeared without the sling for the first time in public since the injury, signaling an important step in his recovery. "Certainly good news for me. That's the best way to look at it," Woakes said. "Obviously out of the sling and I feel like I can move it a lot better now, which is good two weeks down the line.
"I suppose once you get a little bit more movement into it, it feels a little bit more normal. But there's still a lot of work to do. I'm going to try and stay focused on the rehab and get it as strong as possible. Ideally, I won't need surgery for now, but we'll see how that goes and hopefully we can get it nice and strong again."Earlier this month, Woakes had told BBC Sport that he was still deciding whether to undergo surgery or opt solely for rehabilitation. His latest comments suggest that, for the time being, he is favouring the non-surgical route in a bid to be fit for the Ashes. The first Test of the series against Australia begins in Perth on 21 November, giving Woakes just over three months to complete his recovery. England's selectors will be encouraged by the prospect of having the experienced seamer available, particularly given his ability to contribute with both bat and ball.Woakes' injury was one of the most dramatic moments of the India series, occurring on the opening day of the decider. His decision to bat despite the dislocation was widely praised as a sign of his commitment to the team's cause.- EndsMust Watch

SA20 Season 4: Rising U23 stars to take center stage at upcoming auction

SA20 Season 4: Rising U23 stars to take center stage at upcoming auction Johannesburg, Aug 15 (IANS) South Africa's crop of rising Under-23 stars will be in the spotlight at the SA20 Season 4 auction taking place in Johannesburg on September 9. For the first time, each of the six franchises will be required to select a minimum of two Under-23 players in their 19-player squads, a new player regulation in place of the Rookie Draft selections from the previous two auctions. The regulation was introduced to give the selected players continuity within their squads, with their contract terms in line with all other auction signings and at a market value determined at the auction. Under-23 players entering the auction will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Season 3 Rising Star Dewald Brevis and former rising stars like Marco Jansen, Tristan Stubbs, and Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who have all seized their moment by making a significant impact on the League. Brevis was one of the standout performers in SA20 Season 3, where he played a leading role in MI Cape Town annexing their first championship title. The 22-year-old has since transferred his form to the international arena, highlighted by his record-breaking 125 not out off just 56 balls in the second T20I against Australia in Darwin. Jansen was the Sunrisers Eastern Cape's first purchase back at the inaugural auction for USD 347k - the second highest SA20 price ever - back in 2022. Since those early days, the versatile allrounder has soared to become the highest all-time wicket-taker in the league, accumulating 47 wickets at an impressive average of 19.38. Stubbs, another notable success story, was also integral to the Sunrisers' achievements. Acquired for a record-breaking USD 523k, Stubbs has justified this investment by amassing 723 runs at an average of 32.86 with a strike rate of 140.11. He also showed off his versatility by taking on the wicket-keeping responsibilities for the past two seasons and has also since graduated to being an integral part of the Proteas' teams across all three formats. Meanwhile, Pretorius, who entered the League as a raw talent, burst onto the scene in Season 3 with a stellar performance that saw him soar to the top of the run-scoring charts, amassing 397 runs at an average of 33.08 and a strike rate of 166.81. The 19-year-old's aggressive style revealed a maturity beyond his years, as he hit 16 sixes and 47 boundaries in just 12 matches, leading to his award as Batter of the Season and his swift promotion to the Proteas setup. Brevis will headline the list of Under-23 players entering the auction alongside fellow Proteas Kwena Maphaka and Andile Simelane. Maphaka has showcased his development during the Australian T20I series when he became the youngest bowler from a Full Member country to take a four-wicket haul in the first T20I against Australia in Darwin. The 19-year-old has tasted SA20 action before with the Paarl Royals and will be eager to continue this journey. Simelane has been part of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape squad for the past two seasons and will be at the top of the list when the all-rounders go under the hammer. Heading into the fourth season, the next wave of young talent is now poised to shine in South Africa's premier T20 competition. The player registration for the auction will close on Monday. The auction will be broadcast live on JioHotstar in India from 5 pm IST.

Its Going To Be A Big Challenge...: Steve Smith Issues Warning To Ben Stokes-Led England Ahead Of 2025-26 Ashes

The much-anticipated Ashes 2025–26 Test series between Australia and England is scheduled to be played from November 21, 2025, to January 8, 2026. The five-match series, which is a part of the 2025–2027 ICC World Test Championship, will mark another chapter in cricket's oldest rivalry. Pat Cummins led-Australia are the current holders of Ashes and Ben Stokes' England will aim to reclaim the urn on Australian soil. However, star Australia batter Steve Smith has warned England, especially their batters about the challenging conditions in the country. The 36-year-old feels that England plays a really aggressive brand of cricket but it's going to be a big challenge for them in the upcoming Test series in Australia. "I've watched a lot of the series against India and I think it was one of the best Test series I've seen for a long time. The cricket that was played by both teams was outstanding. So, I think England have a good side at the moment. They're obviously playing a really aggressive brand of cricket, and I think coming down to Australia, particularly for their batters, it's going to be a big challenge," Smith told Sky Sports on the sidelines of The Hundred. "I think the wickets in the last three or four years have been really tricky. We've obviously got a very experienced bowling lineup with guys that have played for a long period of time and been extremely successful. So I'm looking forward to the summer. I think it's going to be a great series. I know that last Ashes was during covid-19 and the Barmy Army and stuff couldn't come down. So the atmosphere is going to be entirely different. We love playing in front of big crowds and hostile crowds on both sides. So it's going to be good fun," he added. Also Read: Chris Woakes Gives Major Update On His Dislocated Shoulder Ahead Of Ashes Series Notably, star batter Joe Root, who has been in sensational batting form in the last few years in Test cricket, will be key to England's success in Australia. Ahead of the Ashes 2025-26, Smith praised Root's ability to convert fifties into big hundreds over the past two years. "I think not just in that series, the last probably two years he's just been incredible. His ability to make big scores, go from 50 to 100, which was probably one thing that he got caught in that 50 to 100 spot for quite a while. Now he's just making it count and going on and making huge scores. So, I think he hasn't scored a 100 in Australia," he said. "I think that's been talked about quite a lot. I'm sure that's something that he wants to tick off his bucket list as well. So, like I said, it's going to be tricky for batting, particularly for top order batters. From an Australian point of view, hopefully he doesn't get 100 this summer, but I know that he'll be working hard towards it," he added. Former Australia skipper further mentioned that his team will focus on letting their skills do the job against England. "I think the way we've played our cricket the last while is just trying to let our skills do the talking. We've played really good cricket in the last four years in Test cricket, making two World Test Championship finals. So, we're doing a lot of things right. For us, it's just letting our skills take over. We know the Australian conditions well, obviously. Hopefully our skills are better than England's," said Smith. Ashes 2025-26 Full Schedule 21-25 November: West Test, Perth Stadium, Perth 4-8 December: Day-Night Test, The Gabba, Brisbane 17-21 December: Christmas Test, Adelaide Oval, Adelaide 26-30 December: Boxing Day Test, MCG, Melbourne 4-8 January: Pink Test, SCG, Sydney
