Independence Day
are vivid. 'It's almost like a series of snapshots. The sportsday style uniforms we wore, the little paper badge which we hand-made at home and pinned on our shirts, the colourful ribbon that didi wore in her hair for Independence Day, the colourful sash across our shoulders…everything felt so special.
But for me, the best part about Independence Day was to see my father, Colonel Srinath, in uniform; on Independence Day, he wore something different, and he would look so striking on that day when he got ready for the army celebrations,' shares Shraddha.
'GROWING UP IN AN ARMY FAMILY MEANT PATRIOTISM WASN'T JUST A WORD'
Reflecting on her childhood memories of being an Army kid, Shraddha says, 'My sister and I have grown up watching my father's commitment towards the nation.
My mother would always remind me of the sacrifices soldiers make, how they are willing to give up their lives so that we can live free. Independence Day also felt special because all of us had such a busy day ahead of us, with mum being a teacher and she would wear a beautiful sari to work; dad would wear his special uniform to his unit and didi and I would wear our white uniforms.
We would always listen to the prime minister's speech and watch the parade.

'Being a fauji kid gave me the opportunity to watch the sacrifices, commitment and bravery of army personnel up close. The postings took us everywhere — Bhopal, Belgaum, Assam, Masimpur, Secunderabad and Kashmir. My dad was away at postings in Srinagar, and a neighbourhood kid once asked me 'What if your father doesn't come back?' I remember how unsettled I felt after he asked me that and realised how the families of army officers also live in the thin line between war and peace.
An army officer's life is always shadowed by risk, and the families' lives are marked by uncertainty during risky assignments. And as children, we were raised with that awareness — a combination of the Army's example and our parents' values shaping us into patriotic citizens,' says Shraddha.
As a child, I saw Independence Day as a day to honour those who gave their lives for our freedom. But as I grew older, my perspective deepened. I realised that freedom is also about the hard-won right to live as we wish and not just the literal meaning of being free

Bird injuries from kite strings could go up during long weekend, say vets
New Delhi: On Saturday afternoon, a pigeon was flying gracefully in Chandni Chowk when suddenly, a razor-sharp kite string appeared out of nowhere. As the thread caught its wing and sliced deep into the flesh, the bird, badly injured, fell to the ground. The story repeats itself every year around Independence Day, with many birds sustaining fatal injuries too after getting entangled in kite strings, especially Chinese manjha. So far this year, while there have been fewer cases due to rain, veterinarians believe the number could go up by Monday as many people will fly kites during the long weekend. Jain Bird Hospital in Chandni Chowk said it had received more than 25 cases of birds sustaining injuries after coming in contact with kite strings. In many cases, the birds collapse from shock, said Singh. On Friday, Wildlife Rescue, a bird rehabilitation centre catering mostly to raptors in Wazirabad, rescued 18 birds, including egrets and kites, that had sustained injuries. Of these, 13 had deep cut wounds. In comparison, the centre had rescued 15 birds last year. Mohd Saud, co-founder of Wildlife Rescue, said they expect the cases of bird injuries to rise further during the weekend, when more people would be flying kites. Singh advised people that if they find an injured bird, they should handle them carefully. "Sometimes people hold an injured bird too tightly, especially around the abdomen, which can lead to hypoxia, or a lack of oxygen. Instead, birds should be handled gently and transported in a shoebox or cardboard carton with small air holes. It's important to avoid using plastic bags, as birds cannot breathe properly inside them," said Singh. In 2017, the Delhi environment department imposed a complete ban on the sale, production, storage, supply, import and use of kite-flying thread made of nylon, plastic or any other synthetic material, including Chinese manjha, and any string that is made sharp by being laced with glass, metal or other materials. Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar zone gets CM's award for best performance
The Chief Minister's Award for the best performing local bodies was presented to Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar (6) and Adyar (13) zones under the Greater Chennai Corporation on Friday. The first prize included ₹30 lakh in cash and the second prize, ₹20 lakh. The award for the best-performing local bodies — presented during the Independence Day celebrations every year — was instituted to motivate local bodies to perform better and foster a competitive spirit in service delivery. Gurgaon: Anti-encroachment action has surged fourfold in the city following a review meeting of district town planning committee (DTCP) on Aug 7. Five joint MCG–GMDA teams conducted simultaneous three-day drives at key locations, including Church Gate, Subhash Chowk, Candor 47 and Nirwana Country.
