Kardium, a Canada-based company developing a pulsed field ablation treatment for atrial fibrillation, said it raised another $250 million to support the launch of its Globe system.
The financing follows a $104 million funding round in June 2024 that enabled Kardium to complete its pivotal trial for the device.
The new funds will allow the medical device maker to expand its manufacturing facilities and production capacity and establish a clinical support and commercial team as it prepares to launch the system later this year.
Kardium is preparing to enter an emerging PFA field that has seen physicians switch to the new technology en masse.
Driving the rapid adoption is a reduced risk of injury with PFA compared to traditional cardiac ablation methods for treating AFib, an abnormal heart rhythm that can lead to stroke. PFA has been shown to reduce the risk of damage to nearby structures such as the esophagus or phrenic nerve during the ablation procedure.
Kardium said one-year results from its Pulsar clinical trial, presented at the Heart Rhythm Society meeting in April, showed a 78% 12-month effectiveness rate in patients with intermittent AFib and no device-related primary safety events.
The new funding will also enable Kardium to pursue regulatory approvals for the Globe system and run further clinical research for additional applications for the technology, the company said.
Kardium will be entering a market where Boston Scientific and Medtronic are enjoying strong demand for their PFA devices. Johnson & Johnson has also joined the race, and Abbott anticipates approval for a PFA system next year.
Kardium's investors include Janus Henderson Investors, Qatar Investment Authority, MMCAP, Piper Heartland Healthcare Capital, Eventide Asset Management and Eckuity Capital.
Existing investors that participated in the new round include funds and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price and Durable Capital Partners. The financing also includes an equity investment from a strategic investor.

The Advisory division's first mandate is with Nuvve Holding Corp., which has appointed DeFi Technologies to manage its HYPE token treasury strategy, including custody, OTC execution via Stillman Digital, and performance optimization. DeFi Technologies will earn recurring management fees based on treasury AUM, paid quarterly in either equity or cash, reinforcing the Company's scalable, fee-based business model as public market participation in digital assets accelerates. The agreement also includes the use of Stillman Digital, a DeFi Technologies subsidiary, to execute OTC transactions and support Nuvve's ongoing digital asset purchases. "DeFi Advisory represents a significant evolution in our business model—transforming our existing research and execution infrastructure into a dedicated, institutional-grade service offering," said Olivier Roussy Newton, CEO of DeFi Technologies. Millions of swimming pools recalled following the deaths of 9 children

About five million swimming pools, specifically above-ground pools, have been recalled for a potential drowning risk after nine children died in a 15-year span. The impacted models include 48-inch and taller above-ground pools sold over the past two decades under the brand names Bestway, Coleman, Intel, and Polygroup, according to a release from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The CPSC believes between 2007 and 2022, nine children under 3 years old drowned after gaining access to the pools via compression straps that wrap around the outside of the product, according to the release. "These straps wrap around the pool on the outside of the supporting poles, and may create a foothold, allowing a child to access the pool and drown," the release said. The products have been sold at a variety of retailers, including Walmart, Target, Costco and Amazon. Here's what to know. Which pools have been recalled? Pools sold since 2002 under the brands Bestway, Coleman, Intel and Polygroup have been recalled. The pool brand names and model numbers can be found on the pool liner on the outside of the pool. The recalled products range in price from $400 to over $1,000. Over 200,000 have also been recalled in Canada, according to CPSC. The affected products include: Bestway and Coleman pools sold 2008-2024 Power steel Steel pro Coleman power steel Intex pools sold 2002-2012 Metal frame pools Ultra frame pools Intex pools sold only at and Walmart 2024-25 (266 pools) Prism frame pool Ultra XTR frame pool Polygroup pools sold 2006-2025 Summer waves (2015-2025) Summer escapes (2006-2015) Funsicle (2023-2025) Sand n sun (2008-2011) Blue Wave (2014-2025) What to do if your pool has been recalled Customers who have a pool included in the recall should contact Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup to receive a free repair kit. In the meantime, ensure that children cannot access the pool unattended or drain the pool until the repair can be installed. The repair kit includes a rope to attach to each of the pool's vertical support poles at the ground level. The rope wraps around the pool, functioning as the compression strap did. After securing the rope, customers should cut and remove the original compression strap from the pool, CPSC said. Customers can also contact each of the companies via the following: Bestway toll free at 844-593-4003 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or online at or email at BWrecallsupport5516@ for more information. Intex toll-free at 800-549-8829 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or online at or email recallhelp@ for more information. Polygroup toll-free at 888-621-4137 from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. MT Monday through Friday or online at or email at poolrecall@ for more information. Alcoa halts Canada growth projects amid US tariffs pressure

US-based aluminium company Alcoa has halted growth projects in Canada citing the impact of US tariffs, reported Bloomberg. The negotiation deadline for a new economic and security deal between the countries is 1 August. Alcoa is contemplating requesting aid from the Canadian Government to sustain its aluminium operations in Quebec. CEO Bill Oplinger said in an interview: "The profitability of Quebec is severely impacted. 'The longer this goes, the more damage it will do to the competitiveness of the Quebec assets – and the Canadian Government understands that.' The tariffs, aimed at bolstering US manufacturing, are paradoxically undermining Alcoa, a significant US aluminium producer with substantial Canadian operations. Despite the company's robust domestic production, Alcoa relies on its three smelting and casting facilities in Quebec to meet US demand. However, the tariffs have forced the company to redirect shipments intended for the US to other markets. "We are doing everything we possibly can to ship tons that are normally destined for the US to other parts of the world," added Oplinger. Following an earnings report that showed an additional $115m in tariff-related costs for the second quarter, Alcoa is considering lobbying for support from both the Canadian federal and Quebec governments. The trade turbulence has affected numerous metal producers since the US import tariffs on steel and aluminium were increased, with Rio Tinto also reporting significant tariff-induced costs. Alcoa's executives are now scrutinising capital investments in Quebec, with growth projects on hold pending tariff resolution. The company is also preparing for potential tariff costs from Brazil, where it sources alumina, by considering alternative supply options. "Alcoa halts Canada growth projects amid US tariffs pressure" was originally created and published by Mining Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
