Diver dies in preliminary operations to recover Lynch's yacht

PALERMO, Italy (Reuters) -A diver died on Friday during preliminary operations to recover British tech tycoon Mike Lynch's superyacht from the waters off the coast of northern Sicily, local police said.
The 56-metre-long (184-foot) Bayesian was moored off the small port of Porticello, near Palermo, in August last year when it was likely hit by a downburst, a very strong downward wind, killing seven people, including Lynch and his daughter Hannah.
The accident happened on Friday while the diver was underwater in Porticello, police said, adding that the precise cause of death was still unknown.
The attempt to lift the yacht off the seabed is expected later this month and should help shed light on how a supposedly unsinkable vessel disappeared into the sea.
Italian news agencies reported that the diver was a 39-year-old Dutch national who worked for the Dutch specialist salvage company Hebo Maritiemservice.
The AGI news agency said the man was hit by a piece of metal as divers were cutting the boom - the horizontal pole attached to the vertical mast of the ship - from the wreck of the Bayesian.
Hebo was not immediately available for comment.
A spokesperson for TMC Marine, the UK-based marine consultancy leading the salvage effort, confirmed the death in a statement.
"The circumstances of the accident are currently being investigated by the authorities and all parties are offering their full cooperation. We are giving every support to the salvage team on site at this heartbreaking time and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased," the spokesperson said.

Third night of anti-immigrant violence hits Northern Ireland town as police face petrol bombs and protest

BALLYMENA, June 12 —Hundreds gathered on the streets of Ballymena in Northern Ireland yesterday, facing police armed with riot shields and water cannon on the third night of anti-immigrant demonstrations. The crowds eventually dispersed without a repeat of the chaotic scenes from the previous two nights, when houses and businesses were torched and 32 police officers were injured. The protests erupted in the northern town after the arrest of two teenagers accused of attempting to rape a young girl. The pair appeared Monday in court, where they asked for a Romanian interpreter. Police have not confirmed the ethnicity of the teenagers, who remain in custody, but areas attacked on Monday and Tuesday included neighbourhoods where Romanian migrants live. Ministers from every party in the province's power-sharing executive strongly condemned 'the racially motivated violence witnessed in recent days'. Residents had been 'terrorised' and police injured, they said in Wednesday's joint statement, urging people to reject the 'divisive' agenda being pushed by a 'destructive' minority. In response to what they termed 'racist thuggery', police deployed riot officers with dogs and have asked forces in England and Wales for help quelling the unrest. AFP journalists saw protestors throw fireworks, bricks and bottles, as well as toss two petrol bombs towards a line of armoured police cars. One road barrier was set alight, as crowds watched nearby. On Wednesday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the unrest in Ballymena 'mindless violence'. The centre was temporarily sheltering people from Ballymena who had been evacuated. People living in Ballymena described 'terrifying' scenes in which attackers had targeted 'foreigners' over the previous days. Some people fixed signs to their houses indicating they were Filipino residents, or hung up British flags. 'Racist thuggery' Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O'Neill, the Sinn Fein vice-president, called the violence 'abhorrent'. While acknowledging the protests as a 'bit extreme', college student Lee Stewart described them as necessary 'to defend our own people'. 'We view it as the police aren't doing anything to stop what is going on to those poor wee girls,' Stewart, 18, said. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said in a statement that its officers 'came under sustained attack over a number of hours with multiple petrol bombs, heavy masonry, bricks and fireworks in their direction'. Some of the injured officers required hospital treatment. Police Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson on Tuesday denounced the violence as 'racist thuggery' and said it was 'clearly racially motivated and targeted at our minority ethnic community and police'. 'There is nothing remotely British about wrapping oneself in the Union flag, attacking migrants, forcing people from their homes and scapegoating entire communities anywhere in the United Kingdom,' said Former Northern Ireland minister Lord Caine. But one Ballymena resident Allison McCurdy, 52, told AFP: 'We're sending a message that Ballymena has had enough of foreigners, the town's been destroyed.' — AFP

Lawyers for man mistakenly deported from US say he should be freed while DOJ pursues new charges

FILE PHOTO: Jennifer Vasquez Sura, wife of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran migrant who lived in the U.S. legally with a work permit and was erroneously deported to El Salvador, looks on during a press conference with other family members, supporters and members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, in Washington, D.C., U.S., April 9, 2025. REUTERS/Ken Cedeno/File Photo (Reuters) -Lawyers for Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador in March and returned on Friday, said their client should be set free while the U.S. Department of Justice pursues new criminal charges against him. The U.S. Department of Justice on Friday had asked a federal judge in Tennessee to detain Abrego Garcia while he is prosecuted on newly-filed charges of transporting illegal immigrants within the United States. The motion filed on Wednesday said Abrego Garcia had already been imprisoned without due process and he posed no danger to the community and no flight risk. 'Mr. Abrego Garcia asks the Court for what he has been denied the past several months – due process,' Abrego Garcia's attorneys wrote in Wednesday's court filing. 'Mr. Abrego Garcia must be released.' Abrego Garcia on March 15 was deported to El Salvador, despite a 2019 immigration court ruling that he should not be sent there because he could be persecuted by gangs, and the incident has become a flashpoint for Republican PresidentDonald Trump's aggressive immigration policies. The Trump administration has said Abrego Garcia was a member of the MS-13 gang, an accusation his lawyers deny. Trump administration officials have accused the judiciary of interfering with the executive branch's ability to conduct foreign policy, and they portrayed Abrego Garcia's criminal indictment as vindication for their approach to deportations. A grand jury in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 21 indicted him on charges of transporting undocumented migrants from the U.S.-Mexico border to locations around the country. Abrego Garcia remains detained pending his next court hearing on Friday. His lawyer Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg has called the criminal charges "fantastical" and a "kitchen sink" of allegations. Safety a priority: Nanta (centre) speaking during the joint press conference with Fahmi and Loke. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star KUALA LUMPUR: The days of errant bus drivers are numbered with a database containing their information, including past criminal records, being compiled for the reference of prospective employers. To be developed by the Land Transport Agency, the database will include information on blacklisted drivers as well as the number of traffic offences they have committed. Bus operators will have better insight into their prospective employees with the database being mooted by the Transport Ministry. 'Currently, there is no such system available for operators to refer to when hiring drivers,' Transport Minister Anthony Loke told reporters at a joint press conference with Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi after a weekly post-Cabinet meeting. 'The Cabinet has instructed the Transport Ministry to put further emphasis on the issues of enforcement. The ministry will give its utmost cooperation to execute this instruction,' he added. Loke said this is one of several steps taken by his ministry following the fatal bus crash which killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students and injured 33 others on the East-West Highway in Gerik, Perak, on Monday. Loke also revealed that his ministry has revoked the vehicle permit of the bus operator involved in the tragedy. He said the decision was made based on early investigations, which found the Kedah-based company had loaned the bus to a different individual in Kelantan at a cost of RM500 per month. He said this was against the vehicle permit regulations. The bus owner also failed to provide a GPS data report to the authorities because the device was not active, he added. 'These two requirements were clearly not met by the operator. 'Therefore, all vehicle permits owned by the operator will be revoked and any appeal made will not be accepted,' Loke said. Meanwhile, Nanta said the Works Ministry had allocated funds for upgrade works at the East-West Highway since 2023. He said the road was built in 1967 and requires upgrading. Nanta said he had approved RM30mil for the upgrade and maintenance in several critical sections of the highway in 2023, including improvements to the pavement and street lights. In addition, a total of RM7.2mil was allocated for repairs at other road sections of the highway last year. 'This year, RM55mil was allocated to repair accident-prone areas on the highway,' Nanta added. Fahmi also announced that the Cabinet had agreed to provide an additional RM10,000 for the families of victims who perished in the crash and RM5,000 for those who sustained injuries. He also said that the National Higher Education Fund Corporation loans of the victims who passed away would be waived.
