Discount grocery chain shocks customers with California closing

The grocery retail sector has its hands full juggling several economic challenges that can prevent retailers from generating profits. Inventory shrinkage, caused by shoplifting, employee theft, and other methods of retail theft, has been costly for grocery retailers. Many grocery chains have put a lot of merchandise behind lock and key to help prevent shrinkage, but not all retailers are successful at preventing theft. Related: Popular retail chain closing, files Chapter 11 bankruptcy On top of theft, grocery chains face rising labor and product costs, changing consumer behavior, and fading customer loyalty. Under-performing stores and above-market brick-and-mortar leases that no longer make sense also force retailers to close stores. Huge grocery chain Kroger revealed in June 2025 that it would close 60 stores nationwide in the next 18 months. Kroger also revealed that it would close two more stores in Houston this year, according to USA Today, Statesman Journal reported on Aug. 5. Discount supermarket chain Grocery Outlet is closing a popular California location, which operated for over 36 years, after losing its lease. The owners of the grocery store, located on Zinfandel Drive in Rancho Cordova near Sacramento, revealed on their Facebook page on Aug. 3 that the store would close. Grocery Outlet also closed two stores in the second quarter of 2025, but also opened 11 locations, according to its statement on its quarterly results. Grocery Outlet Holding Corp. said it substantially completed in the second quarter its restructuring plan that began in the fourth quarter of 2024. Under the plan, the company cancelled 23 store leases of unopened stores in underperforming locations, 15 of which were planned to open in 2025 and eight that were planned in 2026. Grocery Outlet also cancelled costly warehouse projects and instead invested in lower-cost distribution centers for dry goods. Trump could meet Putin as early as next week, reports say

President Donald Trump will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in person as early as next week, according to multiple reports, just days after a Trump-imposed deadline on Putin to end the war in Ukraine expires. Trump will meet with Putin and then with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the New York Times first reported, adding that the plans were disclosed in a call with European leaders on July 6. The White House did not confirm the meeting, but indicated the "Russians" were pushing for a meeting. 'As President Trump said earlier today on TRUTH Social, great progress was made during Special Envoy Witkoff's meeting with President Putin," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. "The Russians expressed their desire to meet with President Trump, and the President is open to meeting with both President Putin and President Zelensky. President Trump wants this brutal war to end.' The Washington Post also later reported that a meeting between Trump and Putin would occur. On July 28, Trump announced that he would be giving Russia 10 to 12 days to end its three-year war on Ukraine or face "stiff tariffs." That deadline falls on Aug. 8. Trump has threatened to impose "secondary tariffs" of up to 100% on countries that trade with Russia, particularly those in the energy sector. The president signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on imports from India in retaliation for the country's Russian oil imports, doubling India's U.S. tariff rate to 50%. set to go into effect Aug. 7. Trump's Aug. 6 move marks the first time the president has deployed his so-called "secondary tariffs" on Russian trading partners. Trump has grown increasingly impatient with the Russian leader since May, when he said Putin had "gone absolutely crazy" after Russia launched a barrage of 367 drones and missiles at Ukrainian cities a week after he'd had a two-hour chat with Putin, seeking an end to the war. White House envoy Steve Witkoff met Aug. 6 with Putin in Moscow in an effort by the Trump administration to convince the Russian leader to end fighting in Ukraine ahead of the deadline. Zara asked to remove ads featuring 'unhealthily thin' models, UK watchdog says

In response, Zara said the two models provided medical certificates attesting good health. Zara has been asked to remove two advertisements from its United Kingdom website for featuring "unhealthily thin" models. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), the United Kingdom's independent advertising regulator, has asked Zara to remove ads, on its U.K. website, for a dress and oversized shirt that feature "unhealthily thin" models, a breach of industry standard, it claims. The ASA says these ads were not prepared "with a sense of responsibility to consumers and to society." In total, the ASA reviewed four Zara ads flagged by a member of the public who believed the featured models were too thin, ASA Media and Public Relations Manager Matthew Wilson told USA TODAY. Based in Spain, Zara is a fast fashion company that sells men's and women's clothing, accessories and beauty products, known for their simplistic design. The company operates about 100 locations in the U.S. Zara did not immediately respond for comment about the ads when contacted by USA TODAY on Wednesday, Aug. 6. Ads flagged for 'protuding collarbones' The two advertisements featured models with "protruding collarbones," the ASA wrote in its findings. One of the advertisements was for Zara's ZW Collection Oversized Pocket Shirt in Oyster-White. In one of the photographs, the shirt's low-cut design draws attention to the model's upper chest, "creating a focal point around her collarbone, which was protruding," the ASA wrote. The positioning of the model's arms, one on her hip and the other in her pants pocket, also made her arms appear "very slim," the agency said. The other ad was for Zara's Voluminous Combined Short Dress in Ecru (off-white). In the photos, shadows on the model's legs draw attention to them, making them appear "noticeably thin," the ASA wrote in its findings. The positioning of the model's upper arms also makes her body appear "slightly out of proportion," the ASA continues. Finally, the model's hair was pulled back in a slick bun, drawing emphasis to her head with appears "slightly gaunt." What was Zara's response? According to the ASA, Zara claimed the two models had worked for "well-known" fashion brands and provided medical certification proving they were in good health. As for the photos themselves, Zara told the ASA that they had not been modified, outside of "very minor lighting and coloring edits." The ASA findings published on Aug. 6 state that Zara removed the ads from its website. As of Aug. 6, the flagged photos for the Voluminous Combined Short Dress were removed and the entire ZW Collection Oversized Pocket Shirt listing was gone from the U.K. website.
