HYDRAA chief assures to revise salary of staff
On Monday, HYDRAA marshals boycotted their duties in protest against a perceived salary reduction, raising concerns about potential disruptions to monsoon emergency operations. According to the marshals, the state government had issued a Government Order (GO) standardising salaries for outsourcing employees, fixing marshal pay at Rs 22,500. Previously, HYDRAA marshals were receiving salaries that were Rs 7,000 higher, and this reduction had sparked outrage. The marshals handle critical duties, including monitoring emergency monsoon response teams and operating control rooms.
Following the protest, Ranganath held talks with senior officials to address the issue. Officials assured the marshals that their salaries would not be reduced and that their previous pay scale would be maintained.
The commissioner stated that the government is contemplating a similar strategy. Recently, the government released a directive to standardise the salaries of outsourced employees, which caused some marshals at HYDRAA to worry unnecessarily, he noted.
Due to misinformation, some feared that their salaries could be cut in accordance with this directive.
On Monday, he held talks with them, addressed their concerns, and assured them that their salaries would not be decreased under any circumstances and they would continue to receive the same pay as they did previously.
He further explained that all marshals are former military personnel and that HYDRAA has complete faith in their services. He mentioned that if other states are offering higher salaries than what is provided here, they will also evaluate those policies.

The bill follows cabinet approval to amend the Presidents' Entitlements Act No. 4 of 1986. The proposed changes are designed to end longstanding benefits for former presidents and their widows. Sri Lanka currently provides a range of privileges for these groups. Earlier this year, a government minister disclosed that the state spent more than Rs 1.1 billion (about $3.7 million) in 2024 on benefits for former Presidents. The move to repeal these entitlements fulfils a key pledge of the current administration. On July 22, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the publication of a draft bill to repeal the Presidents' Entitlements Act, effectively revoking special privileges granted to former Presidents and their families. The move is in line with the government's policy declaration 'Pohosath Ratak – Lassana Jeewithayak', which pledges to reduce state expenditure and promote accountability.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has invited West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to the August 22 event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate three new routes of Kolkata Metro. The invitation notably includes a detailed estimate of ongoing railway projects in the state and and financial approvals. While the simultaneous launch of metro services on the Green Line, Orange Line, and Yellow Line is expected to significantly enhance urban connectivity in Kolkata, the invitation to Banerjee has drawn considerable attention, sparking anticipation about her potential attendance at the event. The new routes include the final section of the East-West Metro (Green Line) from Sealdah to Esplanade, which will complete its vital link. The invitation to CM is but natural because the BJP doesn't believe in the politics of hatred. It believes in a federal structure, which the TMC lacks. In preparation for the launch, Sumeet Singhal, Commissioner of Railway Safety, recently conducted a thorough inspection of the Yellow Line stretch from Dum Dum Cantonment to Jai Hind Bimanbandar. The inspection, covering tracks, trains, and emergency features, concluded with him expressing satisfaction with the section's readiness for passenger service. Upon receiving formal sanction, this new service is expected to significantly transform Kolkata's urban transport landscape.
