Neuralink implants brain-computer device into ninth participant
The Elon Musk-owned company aims to help paralysed people use their computers and smartphones using only their thoughts. It works by connecting a person's nervous system to devices that can interpret their brain activity.
This was the first time the neurotechnology company did two surgeries in one day, Neuralink said on the Musk-owned social media platform X.
'Both participants are recovering well and in great spirits,' the company said. 'We are looking forward to supporting them on their Neuralink journey'.
The company did not disclose additional details about the participants' health or locations.
Neuralink said in 2023 that US regulators had given it permission to test its device in people.
The company implanted its first device in January 2024, in a man who was paralysed after a spinal cord injury. The implant made it possible for him to play video games and chess.
After the third person got a Neuralink implant in January, Musk said he hoped it would be given to 20 to 30 more people this year.
Other participants have also had spinal cord injuries or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which over time erodes patients' ability to move their arms, legs, and body.
Neuralink's device is still in early clinical trials, testing the implant's initial safety and functionality in people with specific medical conditions that limit their mobility. But Musk has hyped it as a tool that could one day have much broader appeal.
'Neuralink will do live-changing [sic] good for ultimately millions, maybe billions, of people,' Musk wrote on X after the latest surgeries were announced.
'Imagine your loved one being able to walk again or your parent with dementia being able to recognise their child again,' he added.
Neuralink is one of several companies working on BCIs. Other studies are exploring their use for people with cerebral palsy, dementia, stroke, and other health issues, according to a US clinical trials database.

A Samsung manufacturing facility in Texas will produce the newest generation of an advanced microchip for its yet-to-be rolled-out cars, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced in a post on X. 'Samsung's giant new Texas fab will be dedicated to making Tesla's next-generation AI6 chip. The strategic importance of this is hard to overstate,' Musk said. The deal is a major win for the South Korean tech giant, which lost major clients like Google in recent years to competitors such as the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) due to workflow issues and low production yields. 'Samsung agreed to allow Tesla to assist in maximizing manufacturing efficiency,' Musk continued in the post. 'This is a critical point, as I will walk the line personally to accelerate the pace of progress.' While Samsung already produces the AI4 and has been working with Tesla since 2017, it lost the AI5 deal to TSMC, who initially produced it in Taiwan and will soon be moving production to a plant in Arizona. According to another post on X, the deal amounts to $16.5 billion (€14 billion), which Musk claims is "just the bare minimum. Actual output is likely to be several times higher". Besides Tesla vehicles, the upcoming AI6 chip is expected to power the technological advancement of Tesla's humanoid robots and will be involved in AI model training. What's so 'fab' about the new fab? A fab is a tech industry term for a semiconductor fabrication plant or a cutting-edge factory where companies like Tesla get their custom computer chips built after they are designed. There are only a few tech giants in the world that have the excruciatingly precise machinery to build 2-nanometer (nm) chips, which fit 50 billion transistors on a chip barely the size of a human fingernail. The obsession with miniaturization in the tech world is part of a drive to achieve better computational power and combine it with greater energy efficiency. The South Korean multinational conglomerate has been operating a semiconductor plant in Austin, Texas, since 1996. However, the new AI6 Tesla chip will be produced in a new plant in Taylor, around 50 kilometres away from the original fab. 'The fab is conveniently located not far from my house,' Musk said in the post. Musk has lived near the launch site of his space exploration company, SpaceX, in Texas since 2021. The Samsung deal is in line with the Chips and Science Act, a US bill passed in 2022, which aims to bring more of the highly profitable semiconductor manufacturing industry to the US, instead of relying on overseas producers.

La Redoute The one-time mail-order homewear catalogue company has transformed over the decades into one of France's leading and well-respected furniture brands. It promises a range of stylish and well-put-together furniture at a price that's not out of reach for many people. And it does clothing, too. White goods Furniture stores such as Conforama and But also sell the usual array of household electricals and white goods, like fridges, freezers and cookers. You could also seek out a Boulanger store, or a Darty. Or a fnac, or a CDiscount. All have online stores, and deliver. Products bought from any one of these will have the advantage, too, of coming with the right plug for your French home. Local furniture stores The furniture stores listed above may offer good choices and have websites that you can easily browse for products, but don't underestimate the possibility of finding what you need from local magasins de meubles (furniture stores) – which range from the monstrous BHV Marais in Paris to a family owned store in a small town. Many cities in France have furniture warehouses on the outskirts, so it's worth seeking them out. For white goods, watch out for discount outlets, sometimes called 'entrepots'. Second-hand furniture The pre-loved furniture market is very much a thing in France – just ask the people behind Selection M. But you could find bargains aplenty online, by looking at well-known classifieds website leboncoin , for example. But also consider looking out your nearest Emmaus store, where donated goods are sold for charity, or any one of the 'troc' outlets. Then there's brocantes , which sell second-hand/vintage/antique items. There are some brocante stores but also regular market-style events in towns and cities across France that offer a huge range of items from real junk to genuine bargains on old furniture. Elon Musk's Starlink network hit with worldwide internet outage
Elon Musk's Starlink network is experiencing a worldwide outage, which has left thousands of users without internet, according to reports. Reports of issues began on Thursday at around 9 pm CET. Musk wrote on X six hours after the reports of the outage that the network issue had been resolved and that service had been restored. "The network issue has been resolved, and Starlink service has been restored. We understand how important connectivity is and apologise for the disruption," he wrote. However, some Starlink users wrote on the site Down Detector that their network was still down on Friday morning. No reason has been given for the outage. More than 60,000 reports of issues were reported on Down Detector, with the majority of users saying there was a 'total blackout'. Starlink users on X reported issues from Europe, the United States, Africa, Asia, and Australia. This included reports on Down Detector from Colombia, Sardinia in Italy, Stockholm in Sweden, and New Hampshire in the US. Many of them said that their connections are offline, and an error message reads that there is 'no healthy upstream'. Musk wrote on X "Service will be restored shortly. Sorry for the outage. SpaceX will remedy root cause to ensure it doesn't happen again," Musk wrote on X. For some countries and governments, such as Ukraine's army, they rely on Starlink for internet access. It is unclear how they will be affected. What is Starlink? Starlink is a telecommunications provider that is part of Musk's SpaceX. The satellite internet constellation gives global mobile broadband to around 130 countries and territories. The company plans to have 12,000 satellites and aims to have more than 34,000 eventually. Earlier on Thursday, SpaceX said its direct-to-cell-phone service was growing fast, which came a day after an announcement that T-Mobile's Starlink-powered satellite service rolled out to the public. It is unclear whether the T-Satellite service was affected by or involved in the outage.
