Weather Wednesday: Migrating birds and weather

Yahoo15-05-2025

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Signs of spring have been popping up across the state for the past month or so. Flowers blooming, your car turning green from pollen, the length of daylight, and even hearing more birds chirping and flying in the sky. Native birds that flew south for the wintertime are at their peak migration traveling back to Michigan during the day however most travel at night.
Bird migration happens in seasons with the spring season happening between March and June and the fall migration occurring from late August to late November. Peak spring migration for Michigan typically occurs within the first or second week of May. In fact, according to BirdCast, a website created by Cornell Lab of Ornithology, data from 2023 found that for the Lansing area peak spring migration started around May 7th with the end of peak being around May 25th.
Scientists say that peak migration is defined by the seasonal window during which about 50% of nighttime bird migration traffic passes through an area. Scientists say that during peak migration there could be as many as 500 million birds flying at night across the country. According to the National Audubon Society, about 70% of bird species migrate and of those about 80% migrate at night.
But why do birds fly at night? And how does the weather play into this?
By flying at night, it allows birds that aren't strong fliers to avoid tricky and dangerous flight situations. During the day the sun warms the ground, which as the ground warms it warms the air directly above it. As the ground starts to heat, pockets of warm air begin to rise. As they rise, they spin around and bump into other pockets of warm air. Thermals rise cool and eventually reach the same temperature as the surrounding air and flatten out. This is what causes the turbulence we feel when flying in an airplane. This continues to happen throughout the day and typically starts to end as we head into the evening and overnight hours.
At night we tend to see calm winds and cooler conditions which is perfect for birds so they can avoid exerting too much energy and stay away from daytime predators. Scientists also believe that some birds use the stars as a compass to guide their journey and to know their direction when traveling.
How can you help migrating birds this spring and this fall?
Since a lot of birds migrate at night, they can become disoriented by light pollution leading to collisions with larger buildings. To help limit these collisions, officials say to shut non-essential lights off between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m However if you do need lights on, consider changing the color from cool toned to warm toned and finally directing lights to the ground to prevent shining into the night sky.

Hazy and cooler Sunday leads to a summer-like start to the work week!

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — We are keeping the cooler weather with us today, but don't be discouraged, as there is a warm-up in the forecast ahead! Overnight lows were a bit chilly, leading to a cooler start with temperatures into the upper 30s to low 40s area-wide. We had a beautiful sunrise thanks to some lingering wildfire smoke from the Canadian wildfires to our northwest. Today will be similar to Saturday, we still see the wildfire smoke in the sky, but it is higher in the atmosphere, which means we will see better air quality overall. Temperatures will remain on the cooler side as the sun can't warm us because of the smoky conditions aloft. Daytime highs get into the upper 60s to low 70s, which is still below average for this time of year. Don't be too upset about the cooler weather, because we will see a warm-up as we head into the upcoming work week. Daytime highs for Monday will reach the upper 70s to low 80s, with even warmer conditions into Tuesday with temps into the mid to upper 80s area-wide! Both days feature sunshine and a little bit of humidity, so as we kick off astronomical summer, we will surely feel like it as well. By Tuesday night into Wednesday, a cold front moves in and stalls, allowing for multiple chances of showers and storms. Heavier rain is possible through Wednesday and Thursday, and we could see anywhere between an inch to maybe two or more inches of rain, which could lead to some localized flooding. Keep an eye on the forecast as we iron out the details heading into the upcoming work week! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Wildfire smoke reduces air quality moving into the weekend

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — We hold on to mostly sunny conditions across Mid-Michigan as we move into our Friday afternoon. But this evening, we will have the chance for rain and some Canadian wildfire smoke moving into the region. While most of the wildfire smoke that moves over our area will remain elevated in the atmosphere, a small amount could make it down to the surface this afternoon and evening, creating some moderate impacts on air quality. As a result, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) has issued an Air Quality Advisory for the entire state, expiring at 6 am Saturday. Lingering wildfire smoke will also create a more vibrant sunset and sunrise across the area before it exits the region on Saturday afternoon. If you suffer from respiratory issues, it is recommended that you limit your time outdoors today through Saturday morning. In addition to the wildfire smoke, we will also add in the chance for a few showers and isolated thunderstorms across Mid-Michigan this evening. Showers will begin around 5 or 6 o'clock and exit overnight. After the chance for rain exits the region, we will have a beautiful forecast for the weekend. Hazy sunshine will be possible on Saturday, with highs in the upper-60s. We will stay dry and mostly sunny on Sunday, with temperatures climbing into the low 70s. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
