Tourist pleads guilty over fatal e-scooter crash

The Advertiser2 days ago
An English backpacker who fatally collided with a beloved father of two while riding an e-scooter drunk has pleaded guilty.
Alicia Kemp, 25, struck Thanh Phan, 51, while riding through Perth about 8.40pm on May 31.
Mr Phan was critically injured and died in hospital several days later.
Kemp was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death under the influence of alcohol, and dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm under the influence of alcohol.
She appeared in Western Australia's Magistrates Court on Monday via video-link and pleaded guilty to dangerous driving occasioning death under the influence of alcohol.
Prosecutors dropped the bodily harm charge.
Outside court, defence lawyer Mike Tudori said his client had acted stupidly and now wanted the court process to be completed as quickly as possible.
"She is nervous and worried, she's a young foreign national girl in our prison (system)," he told reporters.
"She's relieved that one of the charges has been discontinued, and now she'll just move towards preparing for a sentencing later on in the year for this tragic death."
Mr Tudori said he'd like the sentencing process completed by Christmas.
"She's obviously done something stupid at the time," he said.
"She obviously wasn't thinking, level-headed and there's consequences, and she just wants to get on with her life."
Mr Tudori said Kemp's family in the UK were concerned and worried for her and that she was being supported in WA by her boyfriend.
Mr Phan's family has described him as a "beloved husband, father of two, brother, and dear friend".
Kemp suffered minor injuries in the collision.
Her 26-year-old female pillion passenger was also taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Kemp, who was previously refused bail, was remanded in custody to appear in the District Court on October 31 for a sentencing mention.

FA reveals ref ban over vile Klopp video

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been sanctioned and given an eight-week ban by the Football Association in relation to comments he made about former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp in a video that went viral last year. Coote had been sacked by English soccer referees' body PGMOL after a video, recorded in July 2020, circulated on social media showing the official allegedly abusing Klopp and after a full investigation, his position was deemed untenable. The 43-year-old was charged by the FA in June and an independent Regulatory Commission has now imposed an eight-week suspension and mandatory face-to-face education program on him. Coote had admitted the charge. 'It was alleged that contrary to FA Rule E3.1 the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words about Jurgen Klopp in a video that was recorded around July 2020 and appeared on social media in November 2024,' the FA said. 'It was also alleged that his actions constitute an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as they included a reference - whether express or implied - to nationality.' Europe's soccer governing body also said Coote was banned from any UEFA refereeing activity until June 2026. Coote has apologised for his actions. The Sun also published a video which the newspaper said showed Coote appearing to snort white powder during his time working as a match official at Euro 2024.

Judge rejects Trump administration's bid to unseal Ghislaine Maxwell grand jury transcripts

A US judge has denied the Trump administration's bid to unseal records from the grand jury that indicted convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's co-conspirator, Ghislaine Maxwell, on sex trafficking charges. Manhattan-based US District Judge Paul Engelmayer said the government's assertion that the materials would reveal meaningful new information about Epstein's and Maxwell's crimes was "demonstrably false". Judge Engelmayer reviewed the transcripts of the witness testimony heard by the grand jury and other evidence the panel saw before delivering his decision. "A member of the public familiar with the Maxwell trial record who reviewed the grand jury materials that the Government proposes to unseal would thus learn next to nothing new," he wrote. He added unsealing the documents would risk "unravelling the foundations of secrecy upon which the grand jury is premised", by eroding the confidence of people called to testify before future grand juries. The verdict is in line with those of a Florida judge who declined to release grand jury documents from investigations related to the case in 2005 and 2007. Another federal judge still is weighing up whether to release the transcripts from the grand jury testimony that led to Epstein's indictment. The Justice Department had asked to release the records to quell a storm among supporters of President Donald Trump who believe there is a conspiracy to protect Epstein's clients and conceal videos of crimes being committed. Prosecutors have said much of what was discussed behind the grand jury's closed doors ultimately became public at Maxwell's trial in 2021, in victims' civil lawsuits or in public statements from victims and witnesses. The only grand jury witnesses were law enforcement officers. However, the decision regarding the grand jury transcripts does not affect thousands of other pages that the US government possesses but has declined to release. The Justice Department has said much of the material was court-sealed to protect victims, and little of it would have come out if Epstein had gone to trial. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted of sex-trafficking charges in 2021. Appealing her conviction, the former girlfriend of Epstein opposed unsealing the documents. Maxwell's lawyers said she had not seen the transcripts, but believed they were full of questionable statements that her defence had no opportunity to challenge. She was recently interviewed by senior officials from the Justice Department, and was subsequently moved from a prison in Florida to a prison camp in Texas. Her attorney said she testified truthfully. Epstein died in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on separate sex-trafficking charges. He had pleaded not guilty. Neither the Justice Department nor a lawyer for Maxwell immediately responded to requests for comment. Reuters/AP
