
From corner office to crossroads: navigating purpose and identity after retirement
'I thought I had it all figured out,' he said, the frustration evident in his voice. 'I've been so looking forward to more time in the garden, picking up the guitar again, getting into a fitness routine and planning trips with friends.'
But somehow Martin's plans haven't translated into meaningful experiences for him – 'I feel quite lost, which is very strange for me as I have always known what to do and what I am going to do next,' he said.
Martin was puzzled by this new experience, and also expressed some anxiety: 'Without my work, who am I? What value do I have?'
The transition from a life of structured achievement to one of open-ended possibility is profound. For those accustomed to influence and achievement, finding new meaning requires more than just financial planning. When work has defined who you are for decades, retirement can trigger surprising emotional and cognitive challenges.
Despite living on opposite sides of the globe and working in different industries and roles, Martin's experiences were echoed by John, who recently stepped away from corporate life and a highly successful leadership career. 'I have no regrets, I've succeeded, travelled and performed. But now, I feel quite lost.'
For both men, the feeling of being lost has been unpleasant, unsettling and isolating. They have found themselves 'in between' identities, neither fully in their previous life nor settled into the next chapter.
We know from psychological research that the space between work and retirement can be a profound challenge to one's self-concept. It is particularly difficult for people who have succeeded in knowledge-based professions where cognitive performance and expertise are fundamental to professional identity: what do you do when you stop thinking for a living?
'I went from having a demanding schedule with people depending on my expertise to suddenly having endless free time. It sounds like a luxury, but it felt more like falling off a cliff.' Martin was coping with the lost and 'falling-off' feeling by taking on an ever-increasing list of projects, and John was grappling with a strong urge to 'do one more business'. 'I still have plenty of gas in the tank, maybe I'm not ready for a slower life'.
The assumption prior to retirement that more time will automatically translate to greater fulfilment is common, but as Martin and John are finding, not necessarily true – especially when that time lacks the structure, purpose, and community that a previous work life provided.
Researchers have found that having a lot of free time doesn't necessarily equate to happiness. People derive a certain sense of joy from being productive and accomplishing things and might lose this sense of joy with a lot of unstructured time.
Other researchers have shown that retirees who maintain a strong social network – for example volunteering or joining clubs – are happier and healthier, while the longitudinal Harvard study on happiness has identified the loss of work relationships and connections as the biggest challenge to retirement wellbeing.
The American writer William Bridges describes this in-between time as 'the messy middle.' For John and Martin, navigating a meaningful life in this time of transition has involved purposeful experimentations and an acceptance of not knowing yet what all the components of retirement identity and purpose may look like. Martin in particular has found the messy middle metaphor helpful.
In his messy middle, John has taken on some charity work to create purpose, various physical labour projects for some tangible sense of accomplishment, a consulting project to see if this provides an outlet for his entrepreneurial drive and a travel adventure to develop new social connections. Martin is testing out a slower pace, intentionally dialing down scheduled commitments and staying with the uncomfortable experience of less 'achievement'. 'It's a struggle, but I'm starting to see that there's value in who I am, not just what I produce.'
Martin has also been deliberately seeking out time with male friends, some of whom are also transitioning into retirement. He notes that these conversations are fragile, as men of his generation rarely venture on the thin ice of personal vulnerability.
'We skate around the issue and often back off, but we all sense we are in the same boat. And in any case, hanging out and obliquely touching on meaning and purpose has been heartwarming in a black humour sort of way.'
Both men share the experience as a mixed bag of seemingly contradictory emotions. They both describe gratitude for being in a position to make choices, for opportunities and relationships, alongside the anxiety, frustration and (sometimes) sadness of a life in flux.
Psychological research suggests that mixed emotions – like sadness and gratitude – are not contradictory but coexistent and neurologically integrated. This paradox validates John and Martin's experience. Many retirees have similar experiences but struggle to put it into words.
John has discovered sharing his writing about his experiences has helped him make sense of his own mixed bag. He has appreciated positive feedback from others that his reflections are encouraging in their transitions toward retirement.
Retirement has come to be seen as an event, but perhaps it's more like a passage – a crossing from the scaffolded certainties of working life to unmapped terrain that must be navigated. The real work of this next chapter is to embrace the messy middle not as a void, but as a creative space, where purpose and tasks no longer arrive by calendar invite.
Martin and John remind us that meaning doesn't retire when we do; it simply migrates and must be rediscovered. The messy middle requires testing new identities, trying new activities and practising patience. Just like work, really.

Almost 200,000 can claim huge state pension top-up after DWP error
Hundreds of thousands of parents are missing out on a retirement top up worth £5,000 on average as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) admits it is struggling to reunite most with the money they are owed. An estimated 194,000 have been affected by the issue, which has seen their state pension being underpaid – or could in the future – due to a record-keeping issue which was no mistake of their own. The error relates to Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP), which was available between 1978 and 2010 for people in receipt of Child Benefit or with caring responsibilities. The scheme reduced the number of qualifying years a claimant needed for a basic state pension in retirement, meaning the amount of years spent in-work and paying national insurance. This was to account for their home-related responsibilities which made them less able to be in employment. Protection through HRP was meant to be applied automatically to those who claimed Child Benefit, with most claimants being mothers. However, the DWP says it noticed in 2021 that this had not happened in hundreds of thousands of cases, leading to underpayments worth £5,000 on average. But in its latest annual report, the department reduced the funds set aside for the repayments from £1.2bn to just £29.8 million – a deduction of over £1bn – conceding that it will not be able to rectify the issue in the near future. The report explains: 'Correcting HRP is inherently challenging. 'The number of people applying to correct their missing HRP has been low. Substantial numbers of people have not responded to government calls for them to apply to add missing HRP and the exercise has resulted in much lower activity levels.' Since autumn 2023, HMRC has issued over 370,000 letters to people who were potentially affected. However, during 2024/25, only 12,379 state pension underpayments were compensated, totalling around £104 million. In the year before this, it was just 419. In response to the low take-up, the DWP has decided to change the compensation scheme from a short-term repayment drive to an ongoing programme. This means those who are affected should face no time limit in claiming what they are owed, while the department saves considerable sums in the short-term. Anyone affected can retrospectively apply for HRP online or by post. For those who require more information, HMRC's national insurance helpline can be reached on 0300 200 3500. Former pensions minister Sir Steve Webb said: 'The DWP's latest report is a hammer blow to over 100,000 mothers who are receiving reduced state pensions because of errors on their National Insurance record. 'The Government's letter-writing campaign has been a dismal failure, and this was entirely predictable given its reliance on a complicated online claims process,' the LCP partner told The Telegraph. 'Although there will still be some ongoing publicity, the figures in the annual report are an admission that the Government itself does not expect these efforts to have much impact.' A government spokesperson said: 'We are determined to help people who have been left out of pocket as a result of historical errors which are no fault of their own. 'That's why we wrote directly to over 370,000 of those who were potentially affected and launched an online tool to help people check if they needed to claim. 'We carried out an extensive campaign to raise awareness of the issue and will continue regular communications to get people to check their National Insurance record.'

London Fire Brigade firefighter retires after 45 years of service
One of London's longest-serving firefighters has retired after more than 45 years of McCarthy joined the London Fire Brigade aged 21 in labels himself the "relief king", having frequently attended as relief for major incidents such as the Brink's-Mat bullion heist in 1983, King's Cross fire in 1987, and the Sussex Arms bombing in McCarthy said he had "had a long, varied, interesting career" and "wouldn't have changed it for anything". Mr McCarthy started his career as an apprentice toolmaker, until his lifelong best friend told him about his job as a said he thought it sounded "absolutely brilliant" and wrote a letter to the London Fire Brigade simply stating: "I'd like to be a London fireman."He began his career as a firefighter at Finchley's satellite centre after passing his tests at then moved to Heston as part of the Blue Watch. He has gone on to do stints at fire stations in Ealing, Soho, Harrow, Stanmore and Paddington, and considers his time at Ealing in the late 1980s and early 1990s as his explains he had an "eight-year rule", whereby he would move on to a new station after eight he began his career, Mr McCarthy wore cork helmets, yellow plastic leggings and no has since worn five different sets of protective fire gear during his career. Mr McCarthy said he was "grateful" to get in to the London Fire Brigade."It's given me all the excitement I need and a good living," he said."You learn early on that you can't save everybody, but as long as you've tried your hardest, you can walk away with your head held high."In their hour of need, people call us. It's a very noble thing to do and I've enjoyed my time so much."I would recommend it to anybody." Asked about whether he planned to spend more time on his hobbies, Mr McCarthy said: "The London Fire Brigade provided me with the excitement that a hobby can give you."He said he plans to "do a bit of travelling" and "get out more on my motorbike" in his retirement.

'I put a wash on and went to bed - then woke up a millionaire'
Margaret, 60, and John Campbell, 73, were on the Greek island of Rhodes when Margaret received an email from The National Lottery saying they had won a prize on the EuroMillions A couple from Liverpool were had returned home from celebrating their ruby wedding anniversary in Rhodes when they discovered they had become millionaires. Before jetting off for a week of relaxation and sunbathing, Margaret had purchased their usual EuroMillions Lucky Dip. However, as players cannot access The National Lottery app from abroad, she assumed the prize was "£2.80, like it always is" and continued to enjoy their sunny getaway. Upon returning home at 4am, Margaret's first thought wasn't to check her winnings, but rather to do some laundry and get some sleep. It was only later that morning when she woke up that she finally logged into her lottery account. Margaret shared: "I looked on the app and I'd only matched one number and it took me a few seconds to realise it was the Millionaire Maker code. I said to John, 'I think I've won a million pounds,' and he immediately said it must be a scam. I kept looking and thinking 'this says I've won.' "I called one of our two sons to say I'd won. When he arrived, I ran out of the door shouting 'I have, I've won.' He told me to get indoors before everyone found out." Margaret contacted The Allwyn, the operator of the National Lottery, and had the ticket details checked, reports the Liverpool Echo. She recalled: "The lady on the phone told me to get a pen and a piece of paper. She said write this down - one, zero, zero, zero, zero, zero, zero. That's what you've won, £1million. I was literally shaking, my hands were shaking." Even after their ticket was validated, the couple found it hard to believe they'd actually won. Margaret confessed: "I said I'd believe it when it was finally in my bank account. The other day I went for a shower and when I came out there was the notification from the bank, a £1million deposit. It's unbelievable." Margaret and John plan to use their winnings to "look after themselves and their family". They intend to use the money to help pay off house and car loans and ensure their two grown-up sons are secure. They've also booked another holiday for August and are planning to buy a new car. John thinks their win might have something to do with their dog, Kash, who sadly passed away shortly before they jetted off to Rhodes. John reflected: "He was a lovely dog and only six years old. Sadly, he wasn't well and couldn't be helped. We keep saying that is it Kash is looking down on us and bringing us cash with this big win." Margaret bagged the prize by matching the raffle code on the EuroMillions UK Millionaire Maker. Each ticket is assigned a unique code which is entered into a raffle, with a top prize of £1M. Margaret's winning ticket matched the raffle code MQDD 67764 in the draw on Tuesday, June 24.
