Official: Real Madrid recover key player for Pachuca showdown

Yahoo4 hours ago

Real Madrid have been handed a timely boost ahead of their second FIFA Club World Cup group stage match, as Antonio Rudiger has returned to Xabi Alonso's squad for the Pachuca showdown.
The German defender has recovered from a partial meniscus tear in his left knee, an injury he picked up on April 29. He is now fit enough to travel with the team for the all-important Club World Cup clash.

Rudiger's last appearance for the clun came in the Copa del Rey final on April 26, a match Real Madrid lost to Barcelona.
While he is not expected to start against the Mexian team, the experienced centre-back is set to be available from the bench, with young defenders Raul Asencio and Dean Huijsen likely to form the starting centre-back pairing.
Mbappe and Camavinga remain sidelined
Xabi Alonso's squad list for the crucial game against Pachuca does not include Kylian Mbappe, who is still recovering from a bout of acute gastroenteritis that ruled him out of the team's tournament opener, a 1-1 draw with Al Hilal in Miami.

The French forward has not trained fully and will continue his recovery away from the matchday squad.
Also missing is Eduardo Camavinga. The midfielder is still nursing a tendon injury in his left adductor and has yet to complete full training with the team. The club remains cautious about rushing him back, aiming for a full recovery before reintegration.
With qualification stakes rising in Group H, Rudiger's return adds experience and depth to Madrid's back line at a crucial moment.
Although the German defender is largely expected to be a substitute, his mere presence in the matchday squad will be a huge boost for the team from the Spanish capital.

Argentina Duo Stand Out Among Poor Performances For Inter Milan In Last-Gasp FIFA Club World Cup Win Vs Urawa Red Diamonds

Argentina Duo Stand Out Among Poor Performances For Inter Milan In Last-Gasp FIFA Club World Cup Win Vs Urawa Red Diamonds Lautaro Martinez and Valentin Carboni were the standouts for Inter Milan in a subpar performance against Urawa Red Diamonds. This is the view in today's print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. Advertisement Inter Milan defeated Urawa Red Diamonds yesterday. They got their first win at the FIFA Club World Cup in their second group stage match. Inter had to do it hard way. They trailed for the majority of the match, but won right at the end courtesy of a stoppage time winner from substitute Valentin Carboni. This gave Inter something to really build on heading into their final group stage match against River Plate. They will feel confident they can book their place in the knockouts now. Lautaro & Carboni Stand Out For Inter Milan Vs Urawa Red Diamonds SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – JUNE 21: Valentin Carboni #45 of FC Internazionale Milano celebrates after scoring his team's second goal during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group E match between FC Internazionale Milano and Urawa Red Diamonds at Lumen Field on June 21, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by) As the Gazzetta note, however, there were many Inter players who didn't look convincing against Urawa Reds. Advertisement The majority of the Nerazzurri squad, in fact, simply appeared to be going through the motions. Inter dominated possession of the ball. However, they lacked intensity and pace with the ball, or any real inspiration. One Inter player who bucked this trend was captain Lautaro Martinez. The 27-year-old looked hungry, and showed his quality when Inter needed him most with an acrobatic effort from a corner, Inter's first effort on target for their equalizer. Similarly, Valentin Carboni came on and added more pace to Inter's play in the final third. Then, he was on hand to turn in the winner in stoppage time.

Arsenal fan favourite secures La Liga promotion

Former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla helped Real Oviedo to achieve their goal of promotion to La Liga on Saturday, scoring in their pivotal win over CD Mirandes. Photo via Charles Watts on Twitter Former Gunner Santi Cazorla achieved his goal with boyhood club Real Oviedo on Saturday, helping them to promotion to La Liga. Advertisement Oviedo finished third in the Spanish second tier in 2024/25, narrowly missing out on automatic promotion. But they had the chance to go up through the play-offs, and Cazorla helped them to the final by scoring a 'weak foot' free-kick in the semi-final against UD Almeria. The 40-year-old missed the first leg of the final against CD Mirandes, and his side lost 1-0 without him. They had work to do in the second leg on Saturday, and Cazorla stepped up to the task once again. Photo via Cazorla on Instagram This time named in the starting lineup, Cazorla watched on as Oviedo went 1-0 down in the 16th minute, putting them 2-0 down on aggregate. But there was a lifeline in the 39th minute, as the hosts won a penalty. Advertisement Cazorla stepped up to the spot and put his kick straight down the middle, putting his side back within one goal. Ilyas Chaira scored that goal early in the second half, levelling the tie and ultimately sending it to extra time. Cazorla had been withdrawn by then, but Oviedo's Francisco Portillo netted in the 103rd minute to win the final and secure promotion. Photo via Cazorla on Instagram The full-time whistle brought a pitch invasion, followed by Cazorla leading chants from the stands. 2025/26 will be Oviedo's first season in the top flight for 24 years. Cazorla's contract is reportedly up this summer, so he'll be a free agent in just a few days. At 40, retirement is very possible. But whatever happens next, the Arsenal fan favourite has made his mark back with the club of his youth.
