Indian-Origin Businessman Charged In Decade-Long Visa Fraud Involving Fake Robberies In US
The U-visa programme was introduced in 2000 to support victims of crimes such as trafficking or abuse
An Indian-origin businessman and four current or former law enforcement officials in Louisiana have been charged in a major immigration fraud case involving fake armed robbery reports. The scheme helped immigrants obtain U-visas by falsely claiming to be crime victims.
Chandrakant 'Lala" Patel, a well-known businessman in Oakdale, Louisiana, was arrested along with Oakdale Police Chief Chad Doyle, Forest Hill Police Chief Glynn Dixon, former Glenmora Police Chief Tebo Onishea, and Oakdale city marshal Michael 'Freck" Slaney. All five were indicted in Lafayette on Wednesday.
According to the US Attorney's Office, Patel and the officers were involved in creating and filing false police reports over a period of nearly 10 years. These reports claimed that armed robberies had taken place, allowing immigrants listed as victims to apply for U visas, which are meant for foreign nationals who are victims of serious crimes and cooperate with law enforcement.
The U-visa programme was introduced in 2000 to support victims of crimes such as trafficking or abuse. To qualify, applicants must prove they were victims of qualifying crimes and have useful information for investigators. In this case, the crimes were completely made up.
Patel, who owns two stores and a fast-food restaurant franchise in Louisiana, was himself granted a U-visa in 2023 based on one of these false robbery reports.
He now faces multiple serious charges: one count of conspiracy to commit visa fraud, one count of bribery, 24 counts of mail fraud, and eight counts of money laundering.
The case is being investigated by US Homeland Security Investigations, FBI, IRS Criminal Investigation, and USCIS, and is part of 'Operation Take Back America", a federal initiative launched under US President Donald Trump. If convicted, the accused face up to 20 years in prison and heavy fines.

Delhi: ED raids against fake call centres duping US citizens
New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate has conducted searches in Delhi as part of a money laundering probe against a 'fake" call centre which allegedly duped US citizens by pitching sale of 'pirated" software, official sources said Friday. Three premises in Khanpur were raided around 10:30 pm on Thursday and the searches are still going on, they said. The action is being undertaken as per the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Preliminary investigation suggests, the sources said, that a call centre was being operated by some persons who misled citizens in countries like the US by pitching 'fictitious or pirated" software under the name of original software like Microsoft Windows. The agency suspects that funds worth Rs 100 crore have been received as foreign remittances over the past few years (2016-17 to 2024-25). US sanctions six Indian firms over Iranian petrochemical imports
The USA has imposed sanctions on at least six India-based companies, accusing them of imported Iranian petrochemical products worth millions of dollars. The action is part of its latest Iran-related sanctions targeting several global entities allegedly engaged in trade of Iranian oil, petroleum products, and petrochemicals. Chennai -based Kanchan Polymers and five Mumbai -based firms-Alchemical Solutions (also known as Chemform Trading), Ramniklal S Gosalia and Company, Jupiter Dye Chem, Global Industrial Chemicals, and Persistent Petrochem -are in the sanctions list issued by the state department as well as the office of foreign assets control (OFAC) on Wednesday (Thursday morning in India). The biggest accusation is against Alchemical Solutions , which allegedly purchased and imported Iranian-origin petrochemical products-which are under US sanctions-worth over $84 million from multiple companies between January and December 2024. Global Industrial is accused of importing Iranian products, including methanol, worth over $51 million between July 2024 and January 2025, while Jupiter Dye Chem is accused of importing products, including toluene, worth over $49 million between January 2024 and January 2025. Ramniklal allegedly imported Iranian petrochemical products, including methanol and toluene, worth over $22 million between January 2024 and January 2025. Persistent Petrochem allegedly imported approximately $14 million worth of Iranian petrochemicals from multiple companies, including Bab Al Barsha, a UAE-based commodities trading company, with shipping dates between October 2024 and December 2024. Kanchan Polymers is accused of importing over $1.3 million worth of Iranian-origin petrochemical products, including polyethylene, from Tanais Trading. These Indian firms have been designated under section 3(a)(iii) of executive order 13846 for "knowingly engaging" in a significant transaction for the purchase, acquisition, sale, transport, or marketing of petrochemical products from Iran. Under the sanctions, all property and interests in property of these companies in the US or under the control of US persons are blocked. The sanctions also block an entity or company which is 50% or more owned by a person or company that is already blocked. Iran Protests Reacting to the development, the Iranian embassy in India on Thursday criticised the US for weaponising economy by imposing sanctions on independent nations like Iran and India. "The United States continues to weaponise the economy and use #sanctions as tools to dictate its will on independent nations such as Iran and India and impede their growth and development," the embassy said in a post on X shared via its official handle @Iran_in_India.

19-Yr-Old Girl, 30-Yr-Old Truck Driver, & An Angry Family: Love Story Shocks Churu Village
Last Updated: A 19-year-old Rajasthan girl defied her family to marry a 30-year-old truck driver, sparking uproar in her village. The couple now seeks police protection to live in peace A strange and controversial love story has emerged from Churu district of Rajasthan, involving a 19-year-old girl who fell in love with a truck driver. As their relationship deepened, tensions with her family grew, eventually leading to the couple eloping and marrying. However, their troubles didn't end there, as their union, which went against both social and familial expectations, sparked a public outcry. Determination To Fight For Love The young woman, Rekha Kumari Prajapat, a 19-year-old from Gogatia village in Taranagar tehsil, has shown remarkable determination in the face of opposition. Rekha, who was pursuing her BSTC course in Churu, met Kanhaiyalal Sharma, a 30-year-old truck driver with a Class 10 education, two years ago. Initially, Kanhaiyalal was employed driving a van for a private school in the area. Their friendship eventually blossomed into love over a span of two-and-a-half years. Family Disapproval And Forced Separation Six months ago, Rekha informed her family about the relationship, but they strongly disapproved. According to Rekha, she was beaten, her mobile phone was taken away, and she was pressured to end things with Kanhaiyalal. Family Backlash And Police Involvement Upon discovering the marriage, Rekha's family caused an uproar. Despite the opposition, Rekha and Kanhaiyalal have maintained that their decision was made entirely of their own free will, without any external coercion. Rekha, however, remains fearful of her parents and has expressed her reluctance to meet them. She left home with only her essential documents. Seeking Protection And A Peaceful Life Now married, the couple seeks to live a peaceful life free from further disputes. Both families are tense and worried following the unexpected love marriage. Rekha and Kanhaiyalal have approached the local Superintendent of Police seeking protection from Rekha's family, though neither side has filed any legal complaints as of yet. view comments First Published: August 01, 2025, 09:08 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
