Indian-Origin Businessman Charged In Decade-Long Visa Fraud Involving Fake Robberies In US
The U-visa programme was introduced in 2000 to support victims of crimes such as trafficking or abuse
An Indian-origin businessman and four current or former law enforcement officials in Louisiana have been charged in a major immigration fraud case involving fake armed robbery reports. The scheme helped immigrants obtain U-visas by falsely claiming to be crime victims.
Chandrakant 'Lala" Patel, a well-known businessman in Oakdale, Louisiana, was arrested along with Oakdale Police Chief Chad Doyle, Forest Hill Police Chief Glynn Dixon, former Glenmora Police Chief Tebo Onishea, and Oakdale city marshal Michael 'Freck" Slaney. All five were indicted in Lafayette on Wednesday.
According to the US Attorney's Office, Patel and the officers were involved in creating and filing false police reports over a period of nearly 10 years. These reports claimed that armed robberies had taken place, allowing immigrants listed as victims to apply for U visas, which are meant for foreign nationals who are victims of serious crimes and cooperate with law enforcement.
The U-visa programme was introduced in 2000 to support victims of crimes such as trafficking or abuse. To qualify, applicants must prove they were victims of qualifying crimes and have useful information for investigators. In this case, the crimes were completely made up.
Patel, who owns two stores and a fast-food restaurant franchise in Louisiana, was himself granted a U-visa in 2023 based on one of these false robbery reports.
He now faces multiple serious charges: one count of conspiracy to commit visa fraud, one count of bribery, 24 counts of mail fraud, and eight counts of money laundering.
The case is being investigated by US Homeland Security Investigations, FBI, IRS Criminal Investigation, and USCIS, and is part of 'Operation Take Back America", a federal initiative launched under US President Donald Trump. If convicted, the accused face up to 20 years in prison and heavy fines.

Amazon Issues Scam Warning To Prime Members Amid Spike In Phishing
Curated By : Shankhyaneel Sarkar Last Updated: July 23, 2025, 20:28 IST In this representative AI-generated image, a concerned user examines a suspicious email while subtle visual cues highlight common signs of phishing scams, as a stylized shadow figure in the background symbolizes the hidden threats of online fraud. (IMAGE: IMAGEN 3 ENGINE) Amazon Prime users are being warned about a spike in phishing scams where attackers impersonate the company to steal sensitive data such as bank details, login credentials and social security numbers, the New York Post said, citing a top Amazon official. In a statement earlier this month, Amazon said it had taken down over 55,000 phishing websites and 12,000 phone numbers used in impersonation scams in 2024 alone. The company noted a marked rise in such attempts, especially around fake emails and texts linked to account or order issues. 'Scammers who attempt to impersonate Amazon put consumers at risk," said Dharmesh Mehta, vice president of Selling Partner Services, while speaking to the New York Post . 'Although these scams take place outside our store, we will continue to invest in protecting consumers and educating the public on how to avoid scams." Many of these scams involve emails, texts or calls claiming the user made a purchase they don't recall, prompting them to share personal details to 'verify" the order. According to Malwarebytes, some fake emails also falsely claim that a user's Prime subscription will auto-renew at a high price, including a bogus 'cancel subscription" button that redirects to a fake Amazon login page. If users enter their details on such pages, scammers can access not just their Amazon account, but any other platform using the same credentials. In some cases, users are also asked to share payment information. Swipe Left For Next Video View all Amazon said it is rolling out measures to help users verify authentic communication. Gmail, Yahoo, and other major email users will now see the Amazon smile logo beside genuine emails. The company also reiterated that it will never ask for payments over the phone or email, and never request gift card purchases. Users are advised to double-check purchase history on the official Amazon app or website and report suspicious activity directly to the company. ‘Spoiled Rich Kids': Chhattisgarh HC Pulls Up State Govt, Police Over Highway Blockage For Reels
Taking suo motu cognisance of the event, the court directed the chief secretary of the state government to file his personal affidavit in the matter The Chhattisgarh High Court has come down heavily on the state police for what it termed a 'disappointing" and lenient response to an incident where a group of affluent youths turned a national highway into a stunt set for social media content. Taking suo motu cognisance of the event, a division bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Bibhu Datta Guru directed the chief secretary of the state government to file his personal affidavit in the matter. The issue relates to a viral video that surfaced on social media, showing six high-end Toyota Fortuner SUVs parked across the Ratanpur National Highway, their occupants filming stunt reels with bright lights and professional videographers. The incident, which was widely reported in the Hindi daily Haribhoomi on July 20, caused a traffic jam and inconvenience to commuters. One of the reels was reportedly posted by Vedant Sharma, son of influential figure Vinay Sharma. Despite the clear disruption and road safety hazards, police reportedly imposed only a Rs 2,000 fine per vehicle, without registering any case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Motor Vehicles Act, or the National Highways Act. The court found this response insufficient, particularly in light of the social status of the offenders. 'Time and again, mischief on public roads is committed not just by the uneducated but also by those from well-to-do and educated backgrounds. The indifference of the police, especially when the accused are privileged, sends a dangerous message," the bench remarked, calling out the authorities' failure to take 'stern action". The court also recalled a similar recent episode involving the wife of a deputy superintendent of police, which it had taken seriously and flagged for top-level review. In this latest case, the judges noted that the police neither seized the vehicles nor acted under appropriate penal laws, despite clear grounds to do so. Commenting on the apparent reluctance to act against 'spoiled rich kids," the court warned that such helplessness on the part of the police could foster lawlessness. The case will now be heard next on August 7. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 20:32 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Nimisha Priya Action Council seeks nod to send team to Yemen
Kochi: The Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, which is supporting the family of the Keralite nurse facing a death sentence for a murder committed in Yemen, has approached the ministry of external affairs (MEA) seeking permission to send a delegation to the West Asian nation for mediation talks. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The action council submitted an application and a list of five persons who it wants to be taken to Yemen for negotiation. "The action council is facing serious challenges to make the discussions fruitful as the Indian negotiation team is unable to travel to Yemen due to the ongoing travel ban," said the letter submitted to the MEA secretary. The names are of the action council's legal adviser Subhash Chandran, treasurer Kunjammed Koorachund, core committee member Sajeev Kumar, Kerala State Haj Committee chairman Hussain Saqafi and Islamic scholar Hamid, representing Kanthapuram Aboobacker Musaliyar's religious group. The letter also requests the govt to propose at least two officials representing Centre to lead the negotiation process. "The socio-economic position of the family (of Nimisha Priya) shows that they would not be able to initiate any effective negotiations directly with the family of victims who reside in Yemen. Moreover, the victim's brother recently made certain allegations such as serious financial frauds against the power of attorney holder of the Nimisha Priya's mother with regard to the instant case," the letter said. Priya was convicted of murdering Talal Abdo Mahdi, with whom she started a health clinic in Yemen's capital of Sana'a and later reportedly entered into a marriage in 2017. Though Priya's execution was scheduled for July 16, it was postponed.
