Competition in EV space to intensify on policy shifts

The Star2 days ago
PETALING JAYA: The automotive industry is approaching a structural inflection point with key policy shifts expected within the next six months, amid intensifying competition in the electric vehicle (EV) space, according to a research house.
The government will need to decide by year-end whether to end the completely-built-up EV import tax exemptions and Approved Permit regime, said BIMB Securities Research.
The decision will shape the competitive dynamics of the local EV market, either accelerating liberalisation and inviting more aggressive price competition or maintaining a controlled environment that protects local players.
Those with strong exposure to electrification, efficient sourcing structures, and high local content will be best positioned to navigate the transition, said BIMB Research.
While short-term demand risks persist, particularly from policy uncertainty and price volatility, credible reform execution could unlock medium-term growth and margin stability.
It retained its 'neutral' stand on the sector with a positive bias, favouring original equipment manufacturers aligned with themes of affordability, EV adoption and localisation.
It reiterated its 'hold' call on Sime Darby Bhd (with a target price of RM1.76 a share) and MBM Resources Bhd (RM4.30 a share).
It kept its 'sell' on Bermaz Auto Bhd (65 sen a share).
Despite all companies under its coverage having EV exposure, the research house liked Sime Darby for its robust EV portfolio (BYD, BMW) and resilient internal combustion engine (ICE) volumes via Perodua.
This balanced mix would ensure defensive earnings amid market transition and positions Sime Darby as a structural winner in both the ICE and EV spaces.
BYD slashed the price of its 2025 Atto 3 Ultra by RM44,000 to RM123,800, with a special launch offer of RM118,800 for early buyers, placing it in direct price parity with Proton's Emas 7 Premium (RM119,800).
This move has reignited speculation of an impending EV price war. It favoured controlled growth, as it aligned with the government's clear policy direction.
The extension of tax incentives for completely-knocked-down EV until end-2027 reinforced Malaysia's commitment to fostering local EV production, supply chain localisation and long-term industrial development, it said.

No plans to review tax relief amount, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: There is no plan to review the tax relief amount for individuals, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. However, the Prime Minister said that the government would continuously improve income tax relief for individual taxpayers through targeted approaches and special reliefs. "Through Budgets 2023, 2024 and 2025, a targeted approach has been implemented by increasing the tax relief amounts for medical treatment expenses, childcare allowances, persons with disabilities, education and medical insurance. "Besides increasing the amount, the government, through Budget 2025, has also expanded the scope of existing tax relief such as extending care and treatment for parents to include grandparents and broadening the scope of health screenings to include the purchase of self-examination health equipment and fees for disease detection tests," said Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, in a written parliamentary reply on Thursday (July 24). Earlier, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) had asked the ministry if it would review the tax relief for individuals and life insurance premium payments that have remained the same at RM9,000 and RM3,000, respectively, for the past 15 years. Dr Wee said that the amount did not reflect the effects of inflation and the current cost of living. Anwar said that the government had also introduced special reliefs for specific purposes in Budget 2025. This includes relief on interest payments for housing loans for the purchase of a first residential home. "Through this relief, the purchase of a home priced up to RM500,000 qualifies for a tax relief of up to RM7,000, while a tax relief of up to RM5,000 can be claimed for the purchase of a residential home priced between RM500,000 and RM750,000," he added. He added that to improve tax reliefs, the government has also reviewed and restructured the individual resident income tax rates starting from the assessment year 2023, reducing the tax rate by two percentage points for the taxable income range between RM35,001 and RM100,000. "This tax rate reduction can provide an additional disposable income of up to RM1,300 per year for approximately 2.4 million taxpayers, including the middle-income group. "In addition, the government is committed to improving tax administration and services to enhance efficiency and service levels for taxpayers," he said. Anwar also said any future review or revision to income tax rates or individual tax relief amounts needs to be conducted carefully to avoid jeopardising the country's fiscal position. He added that any changes in tax policy must also align with international taxation practices and not adversely affect the country's global commitments.

Female debtors being forced into prostitution to pay off debts, says association

KUALA LUMPUR: Female debtors of loan shark are being forced into prostitution and other criminal activities to pay off their debts, the Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) said. Its executive secretary, Zharif Johor, said the association has received complaints from victims who were pressured into sacrificing their dignity due to threats and mounting pressure. "Victims are being forced into prostitution as the amount owed to loan sharks keep escalating due to exorbitant interest rates. "The victims remain trapped in the cycle of debt with no way out. "They are threatened and traumatised," Zharif said in a statement, adding more and more women are falling victims to loan sharks. He urged the public to avoid getting involved in any form of debt, especially with loan sharks. Zharif highlighted a case of a woman in her 20s who was persuaded by her boyfriend to borrow money from a loan shark, allegedly for a business venture. However, when the boyfriend received the money, he fled, leaving his girlfriend with the burden of settling the RM20,000 loan. The woman held two jobs but eventually turned to prostitution when she could not earn enough to settle the loan. "My boyfriend fed me with empty promises. He disappeared after getting the money, leaving me to shoulder the entire debt. "I worked as a sales assistant in the day and at night, I became a hostess at an entertainment centre. Even then, the money was still not enough," she said. She then turned to online "sponsors", allegedly offering dinner companionship but in reality, was prostitution. "I was paid between RM800 and RM1,000 for one night. "Out of desperation, I just let it happen," she said. Zharif urged the public not to get themselves trapped in debt, especially involving loan sharks. "It is extremely difficult to get out of this web," he added.

Great Wall Motor's first supercar to have a 4.0L V8 plug-in hybrid?

GREAT WALL MOTOR (GWM) has officially revealed a glimpse of its first-ever supercar, marking a bold entry into the high-performance automotive segment. Unveiled by Chairman Wei Jianjun on the company's 35th anniversary, the yet-to-be-named model is set to feature a self-developed 4.0-litre V8 engine paired with a plug-in hybrid system, positioning it as a formidable contender against BYD's all-electric Yangwang U9. The teaser image, shared on Wei Jianjun's official Weibo account, showcases the prototype cloaked in a black film, with the GWM chairman and company executives gathered around it. Though heavily covered, the car's long proportions, sloped bonnet, and muscular rear haunches suggest a mid- or rear-mounted engine layout. Prominent air intakes situated in front of the rear fenders reinforce expectations of a performance-focused design. The only difference between the U9 and this is that this does not feature the huge swan neck spoiler. The supercar has been in development for several years, with reports tracing its origins back to 2021. GWM formally committed to the project in January 2025, during its general meeting, which also marked the initiation of a new luxury division internally codenamed 'BG'. That same month, the company filed a new trademark, '自信汽车' (Zixin Qiche or 'Confidence Auto'), with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), signalling a new direction under a premium sub-brand. Further confirmation of the project came in April 2025, when GWM's Chief Technology Officer, Wu Huixiao, disclosed that the company had been consistently developing the supercar for five years. She noted that a significant portion of that time was devoted to balancing engineering ambition with cost control, an indication of the company's strategic planning to ensure feasibility without compromising on performance or innovation. The powertrain at the heart of this supercar is GWM's proprietary 4.0-litre V8 engine. While detailed performance specifications remain undisclosed, the V8 will be paired with an electric component as part of a plug-in hybrid setup, offering both high output and extended efficiency, in line with the latest trends in hybrid supercar engineering. Though GWM has yet to release full details, the vehicle is expected to enter the Chinese domestic market at a price exceeding one million yuan. This places it directly in competition with the BYD Yangwang U9, which has garnered attention for its quad-motor setup delivering 1,287hp and 1,680Nm of torque.
